Say what you will about Tesla or its rascal CEO Elon Musk - the various models in Tesla’s lineup perform incredibly well in safety tests, and that’s a fact. Such is the case with the Model X SUV, which just aced the NHTSA’s rollover test with the lowest probability of tipping over “of any SUV.”

The Full Story

This latest news comes directly from Tesla’s Twitter account, which recently posted a video showing the Model X sliding sideways into big sand pit. At just 14 seconds in length, the clip shows the SUV launched at three progressively faster speeds, and every time, the SUV digs in and starts to roll before tipping back down onto all four tires.

It’s pretty impressive stuff, especially the last test, which shows the SUV lean nearly all the way onto its roof before getting back upright.

“Model X is the first and only SUV to achieve a NHTSA 5-Star safety rating in every category and subcategory, with the lowest probability of rollover and overall injury of any SUV,” Tesla proudly declares in the tweet.

Of course, these impressive test results are mostly thanks to the ModelX’s incredibly low center of gravity. With the heaviest parts mounted right next to the pavement, including the battery pack under the floor and electric motors at the axles, it takes a lot of effort to actually make this thing shiny side down.

It bears mentioning that news regarding the safety of Tesla’s vehicles usually falls under one of two categories - criticism for the Autopilot autonomous driving feature or praise for the vehicle’s crash worthiness . Sometimes it’s both.

Either way, this is definitely some good news for fans of the California automaker, and it lends further credence to Musk’s claim that Teslas are the safest passenger cars in the world.
