Opel and Vauxhall are celebrating their one-year anniversary under the PSA umbrella, and as such, the duo are giving us a glimpse at things to come - specifically, a teaser of an upcoming concept car that’ll inform future production model styling. Looks promising.

The Full Story

This latest concept car is dubbed the Opel GT X Experimental, which Opel says will emphasize a trio of brand values, or, more specifically, “German, approachable, and exciting.” The concept will get a full reveal later in the year.

“The Opel GT X Experimental gives a first impression of what the future holds and what Opel models will look like by the mid-2020s,” the brand says in a press release. The concept will also provide styling cues for the Vauxhall brand.

While only a teaser, there are a few things to call out about this concept right off the bat. First up, the name - “Opel GT X Experimental.” It’s a bit of a mouthful, but right away, we know it’ll come with a slew of grand touring elements and some high-tech ideas as well, all of which should get bundled up with plenty of futuristic styling cues.

Speaking of which, Opel gave us a peek at the front fascia, which will apparently get a design dubbed the “Vizor.” The look is meant to mimic the eye slot of a motorcycle helmet, hence the name. What we see is a low, wide aesthetic with multiple layers added to give it even more visual width. The fascia also includes”wing-shaped” daytime running lights in the corners.

In addition to housing the headlights and daytime running lights, the front fascia “Vizor” also contains the vehicle’s various sensors and cameras, presumably for the various semi-autonomous driving systems. And, giving this is a concept car for 2018, an all-electric powertrain also seems likely, especially when you consider the dearth of intakes in the nose.

Other styling elements include the Vauxhall Compass, with a north-south line across the hood.

All told, the new concept looks quite different from the brand’s current crop of vehicles, and should provide a breath of fresh air across the lineup.

However, beyond the revamped styling, the new concept has us wondering - what kinda tech should we expect from it? Will Opel and Vauxhall double down on autonomous systems? What about hybrid and EV drivetrains?

Expect more answers before the year’s end.
