Imagine having a supercar with unbridled horsepower under your right foot and 15,000 feet of perfectly smooth, open runway disappearing into the distance. Now place yourself amidst 11 other competitors for an all-out blast to the quarter-mile. Such a scenario could only be considered the World’s Greatest Drag Race. Well, that’s exactly what our friends at Motor Trend have done annually for the last seven years as part of its Best Driver’s Car competition. This year, the competition is stacked and the stakes even higher.

Motor Trend headed to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, home of the 30th Space Wing and the U.S. Military’s primary rocket launch facility on the west coast. It’s also home to one of the longest runways in America at 15,000 feet in length. That’s 2.84 miles of concrete. It was built in 1972 to accommodate the Space Shuttle, should it need to land somewhere other than Florida or Texas. These days, the World’s Greatest Drag Race is probably the most action it’s seen beyond typical aircraft landings.

So, what cars are competing and which one takes home the gold? Click “continue reading” to watch the video and see the break-down of this year’s competitors.

Motor Trend certainly did a great job of picking some of the best and most exciting models to debut this year. Included are such exotics as the Ferrari 488 GTB, McLaren 570GT, and Mercedes-AMG GT R mixed with some old favorites like the Porsche 911 Turbo S and Nissan GT-R Nismo. Of course, there are newcomers, too, like the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Chevy’s latest monster, the Camaro ZL1 1LE. The combined cylinder and horsepower count are staggering. And naturally, it wouldn’t be a race without an unsuspecting underdog. That’s the Tesla Model S P100D. Sure, this all-electric sedan is quick off the line, but can it keep up with the others?

Meet the Competitors

Wow, an all-electric sedan with room for five and all the luxuries imaginable in a modern car just out-gunned 11 of the hottest supercars on the planet. The Tesla Model S P100D blasted through the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds at 125 mph. Motor Trend In fact, it’s beyond ludicrous. That’s because this P100D has Tesla’s Ludicrous Plus mode enabled. Ludicrous Plus is basically a software update available at an extra cost to Tesla Model S P100D owners that enables the 100-kWh battery and twin electric motors to deliver absolute peak performance. The sprint to 60 mph only takes 2.27 seconds, according to a separate test done by Motor Trend.

So, what’s your pick of supercar? The Tesla might have won, but would you pick something else to park inside your garage? Let us know in the comments below.
