Tesla is putting the final touches on its next major software update, “Version 9.0,” with a planned release in August 2018. The new update will come with a smattering of new features, including what CEO Elon Musk describes as the first “full self-driving features” for Autopilot 2.0 vehicles. The Version 9.0 is also the most significant over-the-air software update since the automaker released the Version 8.0 update back in 2016.

Tesla has been accused of being a little too liberal with how it phrases its features on its models. That was the issue with naming its driver assist system “Autopilot” and, from the looks of it, we’re going down a similar rabbit hole with the phrasing “full self-driving features.”

It is a bit cheeky for Musk to phrase it that way when it can be misconstrued as a feature that allows the system to engage full autonomy. For the record, this doesn’t appear to be the case as CEO Elon Musk himself said that the update will allow Tesla to start releasing features under the “Full Self-Driving Capability” package that’s available for cars equipped with Autopilot 2.0. He also said that the feature is still “dependent upon extensive software validation and regulatory approval, which may vary widely by jurisdiction.”

If there’s anything that Tesla is good at, it’s good at coming up with a sea of conditions, hiding behind long, drawn-out phrases. Whether that’s intentional or not is unclear, but it’s easy to see it when it uses the “full self-driving features” phrase and then adds a slew of disclaimers underneath it.

To his credit, Musk and Tesla have always been proactive in listening to customer feedback. That’s one of the company’s most admirable qualities. Musk even admitted that the company had mostly been focused on improving the safety features of the Autopilot system. Now it seems that it’s ready to start putting more of its resources on developing new features for the system. The “Full Self-Driving Capability” package could be the first step in achieving that goal.

Hopefully, the Version 9.0 update is what we hope it would be. Tesla has been promising a lot of new features to owners lately so it’d be nice if some of those features find their way on the Version 9.0 update. We’re not going to hold it against the company for promising the world to its customers, as long as it actually lives up to those promises.
