General Motors has release a slew of special editions that encompass the Silverado, Sierra, Colorado, and Canyon trucks over the last few months, including the Canyon Nightfall edition, the Silverado Custom and Midnight editions, along with the GMC Sierra Carbon and Elevation Editions. Now Chevrolet->ke199 is catering to the average Joe, offering a special edition appearance package on its base WT model.

The Black Out package plays on the popular “murdered out” look that layers black on black on top of black. The sinister look dresses up the otherwise plane-Jane work truck to a more sporty, customized ride.

The special appearance package adds black 20-inch aluminum wheels wrapped wide, 275-series, all-season rubber, along with deep tented glass and black bowtie badges front and rear.

Chevy has kept pricing decently low, only charging $1,595 for the extra features. The Black Out package is only available on WT trim levels in regular and double-cab configurations.

Exterior

Chevy has kept the body unchanged on the Black Out package. The only real changes are the black Bowtie badges on the front grille and tailgate and the deep-tented glass – otherwise the WT Silverado already comes with the black grille, bumper, side mirrors, and door handles.

The most major change is the addition of the 20-inch, five-spoke, aluminum wheels. This upgrade deletes the bright, 17-inch steel wheels that normally come with the WT trim package. The upgraded wheels come wrapped in wide, P275/55R20 all-season tires.

Interior

Standard Silverado 1500 shown with options

Things inside the Silverado WT are unchanged from its strictly business approach to amenities. Customers can choose between high-quality vinyl and two-tone dark cloth seats. The floors come standard with vinyl coverings for easy cleaning and carpet is available. The radio options include the standard 4.2-inch touch screen or the optional unit that includes the upgraded MyLink software. SiriusXM is an option, as well as the 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

Regardless of what cab configuration is ordered, the front bench seat is a 40/20/40 split with a folding center console. Double-cab trucks come with the second row bench seat that fits three adults and features traditional forward-swinging doors.

Drivetrain

As with all WT trim level Silverados, the 4.3-liter V-6 is the standard engine while the 5.3-liter V-8 remains an option. Both engines were completely new for 2014, ushering in the EcoTec3 generation of LS small blocks. They feature direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, and active fuel management to increase power while keeping fuel economy in the green.

The 4.3-liter V-6 offers up 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque while the V-8 kicks out a more truck-like 355 horses and 383 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and can be had in both 2WD and 4WD configurations.

Prices

Chevy has kept the pricing relatively low for the new Black Out package, adding $1,595 to the sticker price. That’s not a bad deal considering the upgraded 20-inch aluminum wheels, tinted windows, and black bowtie badges. With the base price of a single-cab Silverado WT starting at $27,300, the added cost of the Black Out package brings the base price to $28,895.

Competition

GMC Sierra Elevation

The GMC Sierra Elevation is the Silverado Black Out’s closest competition in terms of equipment, color scheme, and price. Obviously coming from the same family tree explains the similarities. Thought the Sierra Elevation isn’t a base-truck option package, its prices are reasonably comparable since it starts at $34,865. Interestingly, the Elevation is only offered in the Double-cab configuration.

Like the Silverado, the base engine is the 4.3-liter V-6 with the optional 5.3-liter V-8. Both are still offered with the same six-speed automatic transmission and 2WD and 4WD drivetrain choices. Sadly, the bad-boy 6.2-liter V-8 is not an option.

Prices for the Sierra Elevation start at $34,865 and grow to upwards of $40,000 for a 4WD-equipped, 5.3-liter V-8-powerd example.

Ram 1500 Express

Ram’s answer to the Sierra Elevation and Silverado Black Out is the Black Express trim package. Building off the conventional Express trim package, the Black Express offers black 20-inch wheels, a few badge deletes for a clean look, and smoked projector-beam headlights on top of the conventional Express trim level’s body-colored bumpers and exterior accents. What’s more, the Express is offered in all three cab configurations.

Two engines are available with the Ram, the base 3.6-liter V-6 and the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V-8. While the V-6 puts out 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, the HEMI is the more desirable engine for gear heads. It cranks out 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and are optional with 2WD or 4WD.

Prices start at $28,090 for the regular cab Black Express. That’s a $1,595 charge for the Black Express package.

Conclusion

The Chevrolet Silverado Black Out package is a nice addition to Chevy’s growing list of special editions. It’s nice to see Chevy cater to those guys who want a bit more style in their truck without breaking the bank on a full-on luxo-truck. With the all-black trend in full swing, Chevy seems to hit the nail on the head with this one, just has it has with the other all-black special editions offered on other GM trucks.
