Ford ->ke31 unveiled the first Mustang ->ke428 in 1964 as a stylish, affordable and fun-to-drive muscle car. Most customers loved the Mustang, but Ford felt that it could be even better.

This is where Carol Shelby came rolling in to push the Mustang to its limit, and in early 1965 he unveiled the first GT350 -- a hard-core performance version of the Mustang. This version was driven by champions like Sterling Moss, so the Mustang soon had the on-track credibility to match its go-fast looks.

Over the years, the Shelby Mustang->ke1359 evolved even further, as they became faster and more powerful, with models like the GT500 and GT500KR "King of the Road."

Prior to his death in 2012, Carol Shelby was involved in the development of the high-performance version of the current generation Mustang. This new-age Shelby, known as the Shelby GT500, carries a 662-horsepower V-8 and hits 200 mph.
