What Makes The Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 Special

Dodge has been rather busy doubling down on its performance drag racing attitude as of late, and the Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 is the newest bruiser from the brand designed for staging at the Christmas tree.

For the uninitiated out there, it should be mentioned that the “1320” in the above name is a reference to the quarter mile, with 1,320 feet covered between the start and finish line, and as such, this thing is geared for tackling the strip over and over.

“The Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 is a blank canvas for the serious grassroots drag racer,” the brand states.

Let’s get to the important stuff first - properly motivated, the special edition Challenger is expected to run a 11.7-second quarter mile at 115 mph right out of the box, making it the fastest naturally aspirated street-legal muscle car on the road today. Compared to the standard version, it’s also 0.3 seconds quicker in the quarter mile, and it’s 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 mph, taking just 3.8 seconds to hit the the benchmark.

Making it go is a 392 Hemi V-8 engine. Output comes to 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the rear axle via a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission.

Unsurprisingly, the 1320 takes some of its parts from the insane SRT Demon, including components from the possessed monster machine’s beefed-up drivetrain, such as “extreme-duty” 41-spline half shafts. The 1320 also throws in a performance-oriented asymmetrical limited-slip differential with a 3.09 final drive, while traction and burnout smoke come from street-legal Nexen SUR4G drag radials.

Helping it off the line is a standard Launch Assist feature, which actively monitors wheel hop and controls engine torque output to keep the rear planted under throttle. The corners also come with specially tuned adaptive dampers with a race-specific Drag Mode, as well as a line lock, transbrake, and Torque Reserve feature.

At the other end, a Brembo high-performance brake package with four-pot calipers helps to slow it all down.

Exterior styling details include the new Dodge Super Bee logo. Dubbed the “Angry Bee,” the logo was added to the fenders, the instrument panel, and the digital gauge cluster screen, plus there’s an “Angry Bee” in the custom light-up Air Catcher headlights. The wheels are finished in Low Gloss Black and use aluminum forged construction, measuring in at 20 inches in diameter and 9.5 inches in width.

Inside, all the other seats were removed to help cut weight, subtracting a substantial 114 pounds in the process. Alternatively, Dodge says you can add the seats back in as individual options for a dollar a piece.

Amazingly, the whole package remains street legal, and as a result, it comes with all the comfort stuff you’d expect, including dual-zone automatic climate control, electric power steering, a power driver’s seat, keyless entry, parking sensors, and a backup camera. The 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen in the dash also remains as is, enabling inputs for the various digital assists (Drag Mode, adaptive suspension, transbrake, etc.).

“We created the Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 for the heart of the sport, the bracket racer who wants to drive to the track, suit up, go fast, and go home with a big smile and maybe a trophy in the trunk with minimal prep and upkeep,” said the Head of Passenger Car Brands Dodge/SRT/Chrysler/Fiat, Steve Beahm.

The Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 will get a full public reveal at the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals later in July with the help of pro-racer Leah Pritchett.

Order books will open later this year, with deliveries expected early in 2019.

You can get yours for just under $46,000. As a reminder, the standard 2019 Dodge Challenge R/T Scat Pack goes for $38,995, while the 1320 Package adds another $3,995, the required automatic transmission adds $1,595, and the destination charge adds $1,395.
