It’s official. After years of anticipation, Toyota has finally announced that the new 2020 Toyota Supra will make its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in 2019. Toyota says that that the auto industry’s “worst-kept secret” is finally out, and production of the new Supra will begin in the first half of 2019.

The Countdown Has Begun

The BMW Z4’s Japanese relative has existed ever since Toyota showed the FT-1 concept back in 2014. We then saw the first spy shots surface the internet more than two years back. But boy, we were mistaken. Toyota continued the tease us all year long, even going so far as to using the protoype in hill-climb events. The very first Supra will be auctioned at the Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the proceeds from the sale will go to charity.

What We Know Till Now

At this point, we don’t have any official details about the Supra. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission system. However, we are also very much interested in the manual transmission Supra that may join the line-up later with a turbocharged, four-cylinder unit.

Final Thoughts

We all know that the Supra and the Z4 were co-developed and share many parts; but the automakers have not had much contact on the two projects over the years. Toyota says that once the foundation was laid for the rear-wheel-drive platform for the cars, "After that we completely separated our team. After that, no communication with each other."

It’s no mystery what the car will look like in final production form. For months now, the 2020 Toyota Supra has been running around with light camouflage and “A90” code written all over its body.
