McLaren Special Operations, McLaren's->ke284 bespoke division, was first launched at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2011. Since that time, MSO has been responsible for a handful of unique creations, including the 12C Concept Car that we first saw in December 2013 and the 650S Coupe Concept that was unveiled in April 2014. For the 2014 Pebble Beach show, McLaren is returning to the scene of the MSO's debut with two new customized projects, this time for the almighty P1 and the 650S Spider.

The former, in particular, was commissioned by a North American customer and it further reinforces MSO's billing as McLaren's full personalization service for its owners. MSO's work on the P1->ke4608 is completely stunning. Actually, "stunning" might not even be a clear representation of the work MSO put into turning this P1 into a true one-of-a-kind showpiece model.

There are rare moments in life when you just sit back and admire someone else's work, and The MSO P1 is one of those moments. I'd love to wax poetic about it, but even the sincerest form of hyperbole probably won't do justice to the work McLaren's MSO division put into this P1.

Exterior

The exterior look of the MSO-designed P1 is a true exercise in customization. The Stirling Grey body looks deliriously awesome when you combine it with the silver finishes on the aluminum grilles and glossy carbon-fiber bumper. McLaren Orange accents, including the speed mark on the hood of the P1, are carefully placed around the body, creating that unique finish that only an MSO-designed McLaren P1 could receive.

The rear section of this McLaren P1 has a pretty interesting feature: 24-carat gold heatshields around the engine bay and inconel exhaust. The heatshields are commonly used in McLaren models, particularly on the F1. The name sounds sexy and all, but its functions are arguably as important as the name. The rear wing of the P1 was customized to carry the same Stirling Grey color as the body, although the lower section was left to display bare carbon fiber.

The entire design is evidence of what MSO is fully capable of when you give it a canvas to work on. That includes the McLaren P1.

Interior

Step inside the cabin of the McLaren P1 and you'll probably drown in all the carbon fiber and Alcantara McLaren used to dress up this interior. That's par for the course when it comes to upholding the bespoke qualities of MSO. But it's still pretty jarring when you see it for the first time.

Once you get acclimated to all the carbon fiber and Alcantara, you'll notice that you're sitting on lightweight, carbon-fiber racing seats that come with a four-point harness. Stone Grey binding and stitching is prominently used on all of the P1's upholstery, while the bespoke MSO steering wheel makes good use of the fancy Alcantara.

Subtle McLaren Orange accents on the center console offer a splashy contrast to the otherwise monotonous grey cabin, while the custom Satin Nickel-finished air vents also provide a fresh application to mimic the finish of the P1's exhaust system.

Drivetrain

There was no work put into improving the P1's engine. Normally, that would be met with disappointment, but nothing about the P1's current powertrain is disappointing. It's got a 3.8-liter, twin-turbo, V-8 engine that's combined with an electric motor to produce a scintillating 903 horsepower and 1,100 pound-feet of torque.

That kind of power allows the P1 to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds to go with a top speed of 217 mph.

Prices

As far as we know, this particular McLaren P1 already has an owner.. A P1 on the open market costs $1.15 million, which ironically is right around what you might pay for one if you decide to look into the used-car market.

Competition

Ferrari LaFerrari

Any relevant discussion regarding a competitor to the P1 begins with the Ferrari LaFerrari. Both models are similar in so many ways it's actually scary. Both look absolutely gorgeous; both come with unique and highly complicated hybrid systems; both produce insane amounts of power; both are incredibly expensive; and both will always remain as dream cars for a lot of us.

The Ferrari LaFerrari comes with its own hybrid powertrain that features an elaborate electric motor to go with a 6.3-liter, V-12 engine, producing a total of 963 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. All that and the LaFerrari is capable of hitting 0 to 60 mph in just under three seconds to go with a top speed of 217 mph.

Porsche 918 Spyder

The Porsche 918 Spyder's introduction at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show not only ushered in a new era for Porsche and for hybrid supercars everywhere, but it also gave Stuttgart that long sought-after supercar to rival the McLaren P1.

Like the P1, the 918 Spyder makes use of a highly advanced hybrid powertrain that includes a 4.6-liter, V-8 engine that pumps out 608 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 391 foot-pounds of torque, and an electric motor that produces 154 horsepower on the rear axle and another 127 ponies on the front axle. All in all, the 918 Spyder has a total output of 887 horsepower and 940 pound-feet of torque, good enough to give the P1 a run for its money.

Conclusion

The McLaren P1 deserves a special place in our hearts reserved only for the fastest and most powerful supercars in the world. This one-off model component really is a cherry on top of the proverbial sundae, allowing us to see the just how endless the possibilities are when MSO gets a hold of the P1.
