Mercedes tuner extraordinaire Brabus->ke561 has been quite busy the past few days. Earlier this week, it unveiled its very first program for the new CLA-Class and though it wasn't as extensive a project as what we've come to expect from Brabus, it was still enough to draw significant attention.

This time, Brabus is following that up with its new take on the Mercedes A-Class, particularly the A 220 CDI diesel model.

There's a tendency to ignore the A-Class because it's the littlest brother in the Mercedes family. But doing so would be to ignore what makes it such a special car. It's little, yeah; but it's also affordable, especially to the younger market who can't afford anything north of the CLA-Class.

And when you have an entire generation fixated on a car that they can attach themselves with because it's a Mercedes, then you have one that can sell more than a handful just by sitting still.

Brabus knew that, hence the program for the A 220 CDI. Everybody should too.

Mercedes A-Class

The mesh grille alone already has us hooked. That's the effect the Mercedes A-Class has had on us. Never mind the fact that it's a lot smaller compared to the other models in the Mercedes line-up. This sports hatchback is really one that you can drive and enjoy all day long while still carrying the cache of being a true Mercedes with an unmistakable German soul.

Plus, it's got a lineup of engine options, including a petrol lineup that features 1.6- and 2.0-liter engines, with power ranging from 115 horsepower in the A 180 to 211 horsepower in the A 250. Diesel versions are also available, including the 109-horsepower A 180 CDI, the 136-horsepower A 200 CDI, and the 170-horsepower A 220 CDI.

Aerodynamic Components

The usual aerodynamic digs are present, including a lower front spoiler, raised rear wing and finned diffuser section. Check out the photos of the car and you’ll see the modifications are pretty noticeable, especially the rear wing, which adds a touch of sportiness and aerodynamic efficiency to the A 220 CDI.

Wheels and Exhaust

Brabus also installed a new sports exhaust system with quadruple tailpipes and added new suspension springs, in large part to accommodate the engine kit that was also installed under its hood. And of course, don't forget those 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Engine Upgrade!

Under the hood of the A-Class, Brabus' ECO PowerXtra D3 kit was installed, giving the hatchback an impressive increase in output, rising from 170 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque all the way up to 210 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque. With the upgrades in tow, the Brabus-tuned A 220 CDI can now hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 143 mph.
