As we count down the days until the Mercedes-AMG GT R’s highly anticipated debut this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, let’s take a quick detour down Tuner Lane to present the latest aftermarket offering for the AMG GT R’s brother, the Mercedes-AMG GT S. This program comes by way of RevoZport, which has a long list of Mercedes tuning programs in its portfolio. This time, the noted Mercedes specialist put in the work to give the AMG GT S a nice power upgrade, increasing the sports car’s output to a tidy 650 horsepower, significantly more than the standard 503 ponies. That kind of power puts the AMG GT S in supercar territory and it bodes well for owners of the sports car.

In addition to the engine upgrade program, RevoZport’s kit also features a new body kit that brings out a more aggressive look to the AMG GT S and a titanium exhaust system that not only helps the tuned engine but also cuts 22 pounds from the stock version. That may not be much in the grand scheme of things, but we all know that any kind of weight savings will have significant dividends for a car like the AMG GT S.

Overall, this program for the AMG GT S amounts to what owners would like to see when their sports cars are given a chance to get the full-on RevoZport experience. Everything about it looks and sounds good, although it is kind of strange that the tuner isn’t offering a fresh new set of wheels to go along with the body kit and the engine upgrade.

Exterior

The Mercedes-AM GT S was the recipient of a loud and comprehensive aerodynamic kit wasn't only inspired by the the Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series, but more importantly, reflects Revzport’s need to improve the car’s downforce in order to accommodate the performance gains brought about by the engine upgrade. Some components, like the front splitter with the fender blades, are made from carbon-Kevlar to increase its durability. But other than that, most of the components like the canards, side skirts, and rear diffuser are made from carbon fiber. Customers can also choose between a duckbill trunk lip spoiler or fixed a GT wing. On the cosmetic side, the tuner threw in a carbon fiber front grille and mirror covers for good measure.

Interior

RevoZport paid no attention to the AMG GT S’s interior, opting instead to keep the stock configuration in place.

Drivetrain

At the heart of RevoZport’s GTZ-650 program for the AMG GT S is an engine upgrade that the tuner’s engineering department cooked up in its laboratory of sorts. The components are pretty straight-forward as the tuner only made use of a free-flow intake system, a new and lighter titanium exhaust, and a bespoke ECU remap. Still, these upgrades were more than enough to boost the sports car’s output from the stock 503 horses to an impressive 650 horsepower, putting its output in the vicinity of supercars like the Lamborghini Huracan, McLaren 650S, and Ferrari 488 GTB.

No performance numbers were given, but taking into account the lighter aero kit and titanium exhaust and the engine upgrades, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the RevoZport-tuned Mercedes-AMG GT S sprint from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds compared to 3.7 seconds in the normal version. Likewise, top speed should also get a noticeable increase, possibly in the vicinity of 200 mph.

Chassis and Suspension

Just like the interior, there doesn't appear to be any upgrades given to the AMG GT S's chassis and suspension. That could be attributed to the extensive aero kit already supplied to the exterior of the sports car.

Pricing details for the GTZ-650 kit were not revealed so the best way to find out is to contact RevoZport directly in order to get a price quote.

Competition

Mercedes-AMG GT S Startrack 6.3 by Wheelsandmore

There have been a number of tuners that have taken to building a new program for the Mercedes-AMG GT S. One of the first to do it was Wheelsandmore, which developed a program that’s centered around an engine upgrade. This program includes new sport-tuned, 100-cell catalytic converters; an optimized sports air filter; and a new valve-controlled exhaust system that takes the place of the rear mufflers. Wheelsandmore also remapped the ECU unit, giving the AMG GT S a total output of 590 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. That’s a little short of what RevoZport was able to achieve, but it might as well be just as impressive. The German tuner made no mention of any performance times, but given the upgrades it got, a 0-to-62 mph sprint time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph are both in play.

Mercedes-AMG GT S by Mansory

Proving that the Mercedes-AMG GT S appeals to a wide range of tuners, the sports car has also been through the tuning ringer of Mansory, considered to be one of the most opulent aftermarket shops in the business. Recently, the tuner built a specific tuning kit for a wealthy customer. The modifications the AMG GT S received were centered on a similar package that Mansory presented at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show with the highlight being an engine modification that puts the sports car’s output to an impressive 730 horsepower, a lot more than either Wheelsandmore and now RevoZport are able to do. The gains Mansory got out of the car’s 5.5-liter bi-turbo V-8 engine helped the AMG GT S post a faster 0-to-60-mph sprint time of just 3.4 seconds to go with a new top speed of 205 mph.

Conclusion

With so many tuning programs for the Mercedes-AMG GT S becoming readily available, I can understand if owners of the sports car find themselves in a bind. For its part, RevoZport makes a compelling case on why these owners should choose the GTZ-650 kit. For one, the aero kit is both effective and stylish to the point that it doesn’t drown out Mercedes’ own design of the car. Other tuners are guilty of that. Second, the engine upgrade is significant enough that owners should see noticeable improvements in power and performance, even if no details were bared on how much faster the car is now with the tuning program installed in it. Still, I like what RevoZport did here. It gave the AMG GT S a different and more aggressive look, but it did it in such a way that owners can still see and feel that, at its roots, the car is still a Mercedes.
