Pros
Cons

Exterior

As no surprise, the new Panamera Diesel will adopt the same sportier lines revealed on the gasoline version. We will see tighter and more prominent lines, redesigned headlights and larger air intakes that ensure an improved cooling for the more powerful engine.

For the rear the model will adopt a more swept-back rear window, giving it an extended silhouette, a wider spoiler and redesigned taillights.

Interior

As with the gasoline version, no changes were made on the interior, but the Panamera is already famous for its amazing level of luxury offered to its customers.

Drivetrain

Most of the changes on the new Panamera Diesel were made under the hood. In here, Porsche installed a new 3.0 liters six-cylinder engine, with new crankshaft drive and pistons and, for the first time with a water-cooled turbocharger. Thanks to this new turbine, the boost pressure goes for 2.5 to 3 bar.

The new engine delivers a total of 300 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 479 pound-feet delivered between 1750 rpm and 2500 rpm. This represents a power increase of 50 horsepower over the previous generation.

Thanks to the extra power, the new Panamera Diesel will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.0 seconds, while the top speed has increased to 160 mph (up from 151 mph); in the same time fuel consumption was lowered to 6.4 liters / 100 km (36.7 mpg).

The engine is mated to an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission with shorter gear ratio. For the first time, Panamera Diesel is equipped with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) that improves agility and steering precision at lower speeds, and at higher speeds driving stability.

Prices

The new Panamera Diesel will be put on sale in January 2014 at a starting price of €85,300 - about $113,000 at the current exchange rates.

Competition

BMW 7 Series

The BMW 7 Series has a huge advantage over the new Panamera Diesel: is offer a choice of three diesel engines. The base model, the 730d, gets a 3-liter six-cylinder diesel engine with 258 horsepower, while the 740d gets a 3-liter six-cylinder diesel with 313 horsepower. Diesel fans have an even more powerful version to choose from: the new 750d xDrive powered by a 3-liter high-performance diesel engine equipped with TwinPower Turbo technology that delivers a total of 381 horsepower.

Audi A8 L TDI

Audi fans also have a recent diesel option for the A8 lineup: the new L TDI version. It gets a 3.0-liter TDI engine that delivers 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, allowing the car to hit 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds. The best part is that this version is also offered on the U.S. market at a price of $82,500.

Conclusion

The new Panamera Diesel seems to be the perfect addition to an improved Panamera lineup. It is more powerful, faster and looks better than the previous generation, so for sure, it will soon exceed the 8,500 units delivered so far.
