The 2019 Porsche Panamera and the Panamera Sports Turismo get some extra pizzazz with both being offered with a GTS badge. This is not the first time Porsche has used the GTS moniker on its cars; the second-generation Panamera and the Panamera Sport Turismo have gotten the same treatment and have been quite successful. The GTS versions have always been a good bang for the buck, as you get performance specs and features that are optional on other models, without actually costing a bomb.

2019 Porsche Panamera GTS Exterior

- New Black Accents - GTS Branding - Lowered Suspension (10 mm) - 20-inch Wheels Standard - Large Brakes

When compared to the regular Panamera, the GTS version's side skirts and the faux skid plates at the front and the rear get more black treatment, which is synonymous with sportiness. Apart from this, the car rides on 20-inch Panamera design wheels that are offered as standard. Adaptive Air suspension is standard, and it also sits 10 mm closer to the ground. However, being a car that will be treated in a slightly tougher manner, the chassis and the suspension have been tweaked for better handling, especially on the corners. It even gets larger brakes - 390 mm in the front and 365 mm in the rear, to keep the car under control for people who like to burn more rubber on the tarmac.

2019 Porsche Panamera GTS Interior

- Extra doses of black Alcantara - GTS badging - Updated Digital Cockpit - New Head-Up Display - Extra Seat Bolstering of Standard Model

Coming to the interior, the GTS is exactly the same as the regular Panamera, albeit with a few add-ons to give it the premium feel. There is GTS branding all around the cabin. The highlight is the digital cockpit and a new heads-up display that can be configured in different colors. The tachometer gets a fiery red look that will look apt when you’ll be red-lining the car. It's important to note, however, that this is the first time the Panamera gets a head-up display. You can customize the GTS with contrast colors for stitching and the GTS logos in the cabin. The seats get extra bolstering to make sure you don’t slide out when ripping the corners hard.

2019 Porsche Panamera GTS Drivetrain

- 4.0-liter, Twin-Turbo, V-8 - 453 horsepower - 457 LB-FT Torque - 13 Ponies more than Panamera S - 0-62 mph in 3.9 Seconds - 182 MPH Top Speed

This is where the GTS really differentiates and distances itself from the regular Panamera. The GTS is slotted between the base trim and top-spec Turbo. Previously, the Panamera came with a 4.8-liter, naturally aspirated V-8 engine that churned 440 horses. It paired to an eight-speed PDK automatic transmission system. This is 13 horses more than the Panamera S, but almost a 100 ponies less than the Panamera Turbo. As for the speed runs, both the GTS trims can sprint to 62 mph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds. The Sports Turismo tops out at 180 mph, and the saloon GTS at 182 mph.

Porsche is known to spoil customers with a host of packages to choose from, and the same tradition continues here as well. Available options include a Sport Chrono package, sport exhaust system, and the Sport Design package.

2019 Porsche Panamera GTS Prices

The car will reach the dealerships only in the second-half of 2019. The price for the Panamera GTS starts at $128,300, and is $6,200 cheaper than the Gran Turismo. While it may seem quite steep when compared to the standard Panamera, the features and specs offered for the extra price seem worth it.

2019 Porsche Panamera GTS Competition

Mercedes-AMG GT

The Mercedes-AMG GT is nothing short of a looker. Just like its big brother, the GT R, this car comes with the Panamericana grille and tear-drop headlight to give it an aggressive face that could intimidate even the much larger SUVs. On the inside, it’s a typical Mercedes; no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get offended.

In terms of performance, The GT is almost equally spec’d as the Panamera GTS. It is powered by a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine that generates 469 horses and 465 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to AMG’s Shiftspeed dual-clutch transmission. AMG GT takes 3.9 seconds to sprint from 0 to 62 mph, before hitting a maximum top speed of 189 mph. The prices start around $113,500. If you’re in the market, you’ll be in a soup as to which car to go for.

Maserati Quattroporte GTS

The Quattroporte has been around for a while now, and it still looks fresh. The exquisite, royal styling has made it an evergreen car. Interior-wise, it reeks of quality and has great fit and finesse all around. But this is where it kind of all ends.

With Ferrari DNA running in its blood, this Maserati never had to establish and work hard ever. Perhaps, that is why it has the talent, but not the will to succeed and run fast; quite literally. The Maserati Quattroporte GTS is powered by a 3.8-liter, V-8 engine that produces 523 horses and 534 pound-feet of torque.

Despite such figures on paper, the car is a slouch when compared to the Panamera GTS and the Mercedes-AMG GT. It takes 4.6-seconds to touch 62 mph from a standstill, before topping out at 190 mph. The car is also priced much higher than its rivals listed here; starting at $137,980. Unless you’re a Maserati fanboy, or take a heart-over-head decision, the Quattroporte GTS should be your last pick.

Conclusion

The Panamera GTS is not a new name and has proven its mettle in the past as well. The 2019 model comes with a host of new features in and out. Feature-list is rich and loaded to the brim for the price it commands. There are, however, competitors in the ballpark that provide you much better cars. Keep a flexibility of 10-percent of the price, and you’ll have a plethora of options to choose from. No, I’m not saying the price is not competitive, or the Panamera GTS is a compromise in any way; it’s just that the competition is so high that you can’t help but look elsewhere before making a call. The initial impressions are very positive, and we’ll have to wait to see if Porsche can convert this into sales figures. What are your thoughts on the Porsche GTS?
