Truck makers these days are diving deep into special editions and unique trim packages to spice up their current lineup. Just take a gander at growing list of special edition offered by General Motors on its Chevy and GMC products, for example. Now Ram->ke4684 is entering the game with a limited edition sport package on its Ram 1500. Offered in two colors, the Ignition Orange Sport and Black Sport trucks bring exclusivity along with a bundle of popular options, including the HEMI V-8.

Ram isn’t playing around with the exclusivity portion of the deal – only 1,000 examples of each color will produced. The trucks only come in the Crew Cab configuration, but do give customers the choice of 2WD or 4WD. The order books opened with Ram's announcement and production is to begin in April 2015.

Pricing for both the Ignition Orange and Black Sport truck packages start at $1,595 over the standard MSRP. Order a 2WD version with no additional options, and the base price starts at $43,810, including destination.

Exterior

The Ignition Orange and Black Sport packages start off with an already menacing truck and add even more attitude. The looker of the pair is the Ignition Orange with its matte black hood stripes and chrome grille inserts. HID and LED-lined headlights bring sophistication to the front while the standard 20-inch wheels and dual exhaust add street cred.

Despite the media image supplied with the news release, Nick Cappa of Ram says the Black Sport package does get the same dual-vented hood as the Ignition Orange truck. It’s also noteworthy to point out the black truck pictured here is a Quad Cab, which won’t be offered with the Crew Cab-only Sport packages.

Interior

Both trucks feature black leather-lined interiors with plenty of amenities. The Ignition Orange truck goes a step further by offering body-colored accent stitching on the black seats, along with orange sport mesh inserts and an orange Ram’s head on the headrest. Conversely, the Black Sport truck features an all-black cabin with Light Black Chrome accents.

Both color options include the upgraded 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system. From my experience, the 8.4AN is one of the best, if not the best in-dash infotainment systems on the market today. It’s easy to operate, even for beginners, and it doesn’t replace commonly used HVAC or radio physical controls. Users are quickly spoiled to the clear graphics and intuitive layouts.

Otherwise, the cabin in both trucks offers seating for five with front bucket seats and limo-like legroom for the rear seat passengers.

Drivetrain

Ram has made the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 the standard engine. Just like it does in other trim levels, the HEMI produces 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed through the standard ZF-sourced, TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Customers can choose between 2WD or 4WD. In either configuration, the rear axle gets a low 3.92 gear ratio for quick starts and heavy hauling.

Prices

The buy-in price for the Ignition Orange and Black Sport package is $1,595. That’s on top of the base starting price for the 2015 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Sport trim package of $41,020. Lastly, owners must tack on the $1,195 for delivery fees. All told, the truck’s price starts at $43,810.

Competition

2015 Chevrolet Silverado Black Out Edition

It might not have the cool orange paint job, but the Silverado Black Out package offers great competition against the Ram 1500 Black Sport. The Chevy comes complete with the murdered out appearance package inside and out. For those wanting the V-8, the Chevy offers the 5.3-liter, but get ready to pay extra for it. The 4.3-liter V-6 comes standard.

The Silverado Black Out is based on the workin’ man’s WT trim level, so the interior adornments are less flashy. However that does decrease the truck’s base asking price. Expect to pay just under $29,000 for one; roughly $14,800 less than the Ram.

2015 GMC Sierra Elevation Edition

Yet another black-on-black GM truck is the GMC Sierra Elevation. This one is based on a higher trim level and comes with more standard features (and a fatter price tag). Even still, the 4.3-liter V-6 is the standard engine and customers will have to pay slightly more than $1,000 for the 5.3-liter V-8.

Prices for the Sierra Elevation start at $34,865. The only real down side to the Elevation is GMC only offers the option package with the Double-Cab configuration, resulting in far less legroom for rear seat passengers.

Conclusion

All told, the Ram 1500 Ignition Orange and Black Sport trims offer a very exclusive and good-looking package to truck customers who value appearance and attitude more than just towing specs and hauling capacities. Like most trucks these days, its price is getting lofty, but it does include a bevy of great standard equipment and a honkin’ V-8 with a thunderous dual exhaust system. The 2,000-example limit should help the trucks’ resale and collectability value as time goes on.

The order books should fill up fast for these trucks and it wouldn’t be surprising if Ram sold them all before production begins in April. So if you’re in the market for a low-volume Ram truck, you’d better act fast.
