Launched side-by-side with the 2017 Ram 1500 Rebel Mojave Sand package at the 2016 L.A. Auto Show, the 2017 Ram 1500 Ignition Orange Sport model is a limited-edition truck with tons of bright colors, decals, black accents, and a surprisingly customized interior meant to appeal to the more “expressive” truck buyer. This thing ain’t quite – that’s for sure.

The Ignition Orange Sport is based on the Ram 1500 Crew Cab with the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and eight-speed automatic in either 2WD or 4WD.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Ignition Orange package before, though. Ram introduced the special edition for the 2015 model year. That truck had many of the same features that’s on the 2017 model, including the bright orange paint, the matte black hood graphics, blacked out badges, and orange accents throughout the interior. For 2017 though, Ram dumped the bright aluminum wheels in favor of glossy black 20-inch rollers that match the other black accents around the exterior.

The Ignition Orange Sport also lives up to its “limited edition” branding. Ram will only produce 1,500 examples. Prices are not terrible, however, with the Ignition Orange 1500 starting at $43,740. That includes the Crew Cab truck, the Hemi V-8, and all the bespoke Ignition Orange parts. What’s more, that’s actually $70 less expensive that the 2015 Ignition Orange model.

There’s more information about the truck further down, so keep reading for an in-depth look into Ram’s 2017 Ignition Orange Sport package.

What makes the Ram 1500 Ignition Orange Sport special

Starting with the mid-grade Sport trim level, The Ignition Orange Sport package adds the bright orange paint – otherwise called Copperhead inside Ram’s design studio – the matte black hood stripes; the back 20-inch wheels, the black badges on the grille, doors, and tailgate; the satin chrome grille louvers; and it makes the normally optional Sport Performance hood a standard feature.

Inside, the 2017 Ram Ignition Orange Sport is treated to black leather with Copperhead contrast stitching and center seat pads, Copperhead Ram’s head logos on the side of the headrests, and Copperhead anodized aluminum trim pieces around the center console, infotainment system, and on the door panels. The orange contrast stitching is also found on the steering wheel.

The Ignition Orange Sport can only be had with the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. That’s the most suitable engine choice for this truck anyway, thanks to its 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. It also makes a rather nice sound thanks to its dual exhaust system. The V-8 is mated to the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. And if the 2017 model is anything like the 2015 model, the 3.21 axle ratio has been swapped for the optional 3.92 gears. While that won’t help with highway fuel economy, it will give the truck better acceleration and low-end pulling power. Customers can choose between 2WD or 4WD configurations.

Beyond those changes, this is a standard Ram 1500. It comes with all the things that make the truck what it is. This includes the highly regarded 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system, the large TFT driver information display, dual-zone climate control, rotary shifter knob, optional air suspension, and the muscular look that has become the iconic Ram front end.

The 2017 Ram Ignition Orange Sport is already arriving at dealerships. It carries a starting MSRP of $43,740, plus a $1,320 destination fee.
