Vanity has never been one of Ram’s strong suits, but the hulking pickup brand is making an exception with the launch of the Ram 2500 Power Wagon Mojave Sand Edition. Essentially an aesthetics package, the 2500 Power Wagon Mojave Sand Edition takes advantage of the Mojave Sand beige color, which has become the fastest-selling shade on the Ram Rebel. Now, the color is appearing for the first time on a Ram Heavy Duty model. Only 1,500 units will be built, with each model priced at $54,830.

What makes the Ram 2500 Power Wagon Mojave Sand Edition special

Don’t be fooled by its special edition billing. The 2018 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Mojave Sand Edition isn’t going to make your excursions in the Nevada desert any easier. But it can make the off-road pickup look better while it’s roughing the terrain. That’s the gist of this special edition Ram pickup. It gets its name, not from some performance package that’s meant to conquer the Mojave, but from a fancy shade of color that’s apparently become a big hit with the 2500’s brother, the Ram Rebel.

It’s a part-sexy, part-dusty look that fits with the profile of the heavy-duty hauler. The shade is unmistakable, too. You can see it on the street and recognize it as a unique paint finish, especially on a vehicle as big as the 2500 Power Wagon.

Fortunately, the fancy color isn’t the only exclusive mark on the special edition 2500 Power Wagon. The package also comes with an entirely black version of the 2500 Power Wagon’s 17-inch wheels. The interior also benefits from black upholstery and a new 8.4-inch infotainment system. On the side of options-turned-standard-equipment, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon Mojave Sand Edition comes standard with the Heavy Duty Luxury Group option. That means the pickup also features heated, power-folding mirrors, LED lighting in the bed, an overhead console in the cabin, and a universal garage door opener. The last item is a weird addition, but if it’s there, it’s there.

There are no mechanical changes to the Ram 2500 Power Wagon Mojave Sand Edition. That comes as no surprise, partly because adding upgrades on this end requires a lot of work on Ram’s part. It’s powered by a 6.4-liter V-8 engine that produces 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. All that power goes to all four wheels courtesy of a six-speed automatic transmission. It has locking differentials in the front and traction aids at the back. It also has an electronic disconnecting sway bar that can provide up to 26 inches of wheel travel, complementing the pickup’s 14.3-inch ground clearance and 30-inch wading depth. Likewise, a 12,000-pound-rated Warn winch is also included, providing the necessary tool that gets you or your friends out of trouble.

Ultimately, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon Mojave Sand Edition is defined by the exclusive paint color it’s wearing. It doesn’t have any functional use, but every so often, it’s nice to see a heavy-duty pickup like the Ram 2500 in a different and far more aesthetically pleasing light. Each ones costs $54,830, not counting the $1,695 destination tax. As expected, the special edition model’s price point is slightly higher than the $52,595 entry price of a base Ram Heavy Duty model.
