Not content with blowing us away with the Rimac C_Two, the electric supercar brand took to the Peterson Automotive Museum to showcase a special edition version of the C_Two, called the California Edition. The limited-run electric supercar mixes all the mind-numbing features and qualities of the C_Two and adds room for…two champagne bottles. There's no word yet on the availability of the C_Two California Edition, though expect it to be a tad more expensive than the $1.2 million standard version.

What makes the Rimac C_Two California Edition special

The Rimac C-Two California Edition is what happens when excess meets more excess. Not that we’re complaining because the finished product is still mesmerizing to look at, let alone to drive. The electric supercar is finished in an exclusive Mexican Blue paint that reminds us of the crystal waters of the Pacific Ocean.

In the event that you do see one, take a gander at the wheel design of the California Edition. It’s completely brand new and has a center cap finished in the same Mexican Blue shade as the body. Other than the paint and wheels, the Calfornia Edition retains the aesthetic language of the C_Two, which is to say that it looks positively ridonkulous. The supercar’s design is streamlined to perfection. From the aggressive hood, menacing headlamps, sharp creases, layered lines, and all the way to the highly adaptable rear wing, the C_Two California Edition looks like a supercar’s supercar.

Step inside the plush and modern cabin and you’ll be wrapped in the warm embrace of plush leather and carbon fiber. An assortment of tech items — the large tablet-like display on the center tunnel is impossible to miss — enhances the interior’s modern ambiance.

Every special edition model, whether it’s subcompact city car or an electric supercar, has one (or more) characteristic that justifies its name and status. In the case of the C_Two California Edition, it earns its special edition status when you pop open the trunk. Inside is space exclusively allocated for a pair of six-liter champagne bottles and crystal flutes. As if a car that can do what the C_Two does isn’t special enough, Rimac’s throwing in the bubbly to celebrate the car’s exclusive name and status.

There are no changes to the car’s powertrain, nor should you expect one. The Rimac C_Two already has four electric motors, one on each wheel, that combine to produce a stool-making 1,914 horsepower and 1,696 pound-feet of torque. This machine is so powerful that Rimac actually installed a pair of single-speed gearboxes on each of the two front wheels and twin-two-speed gearboxes on the rear wheels. That’s a technical recipe for speed, speed, and more speed.

Translate that to Europe’s own 0-to-62-mph category, and it still does in under two seconds, or 1.97 seconds, to be exact. In the event you haven’t lost your wits yet, the electric supercar can hit 100 mph from a standstill position in 4.3 seconds and a quarter-mile in just 9.1 seconds. If you still have your mental faculties by the time it clocks a quarter-mile time, the supercar can proceed to do a 0-to-186-mph time of 11.8 seconds on its way to posting a top speed of 258 mph.

As delightful and scary as all these features are, we’ve yet to get to the C_Two’s ace in the hole: autonomous driving. Believe it or not, but this speed demon is ready for Level 4 autonomy, thanks in part to having eight cameras, LIDAR, six radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors spread throughout its multi-million dollar body. According to Rimac, it only takes one hour on board the C_Two for the supercar to generate 6 gigabytes of data, all thanks to the 72 ECUs and processors that it also has on board. Think a MacBook Pro is fast? Rimac says that the C_Two has the computing power of 22 of them.

Rimac hasn’t said if it plans to sell the C_Two California Edition, but it did say that only 150 units of the C_Two will be made, each carrying a price tag of $1.2 million. In the event the California Edition does go for sale — an auction is probably its likely destination — expect its value to be a notch higher than its “standard” counterparts.
