It looks like the BMW 3-Series GT might not see the light of day in the coming decade. According to BMW Blog, the 3-Series GT will be dropped from BMW’s lineup once the current generation goes out of production in 2020. This is solely because of poor sales figures, and the fact that the widely spread 3-Series has enough on its plate already.

Succumbing Too Soon?

Even though this hasn’t been confirmed, and BMW Blog has cited unnamed sources behind this report, this could very well be true, since there were rumors suggesting the 3-Series GT and 4-Series Gran Coupe would be merged into one model. Also, the 3-Series GT never raked in numbers for BMW and always created polarizing opinions between customers. Because of this, the car won’t survive beyond this generation.

Because the 3-Series is available in literally every shape possible; sedan, wagon, coupe, convertible, liftback, and hatchback, it didn’t make much sense to continue with the GT anyway. However, BMW already has its replacement ready in its existing model lineup – the BMW 3-Series Touring. The wagon is much more practical with the larger boot space and is also around $500 cheaper than the 3-Series GT.

As for the engine specs, the 330i comes with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, TwinPower engine that produces 248 ponies and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 340i gets the same engine, but with a higher power output – 322 horses and 330 pound-feet of torque. It is also loaded to the brim with a 16-speaker Harman Kandor audio system, cruise control, iDrive system with onboard computer, LED DRLs, Keyless Entry, and Park Assist. It’s sad that, despite all this, the car didn’t sell well. Yes, I have a soft side for the 3-Series GT, and I feel BMW should have pushed this car a little more all these years to swell sales.
