Yesterday Subaru->ke86 dropped two teaser images of a sports car that appeared to be the STI version of its BRZ sports car. Unfortunately, we have to be the bearer of bad news, as it wasn't previewing a BRZ STI. Rather, Suby was teasing its BRZ tS model that it unveiled at the 86 Festival in Japan.

The "tS" in the nomenclature means that the model was "Tuned by STI," but it is only a lighter version of a base BRZ model. This would explain the title of the images on the STI site contained "tS" in them.

Since the BRZ->ke3973 tS is not a true member of the STI lineup, the only updates it will receive are for weight-saving and aesthetic purposes, so there will not be a turbocharged variant just yet. This pegs the BRZ tS at the same 200 horsepower as the standard BRZ.

According to a source that informed 7Tune, there are two versions of this lightweight BRZ: BRZ tS and BRZ tS GT-Package. The "GT-Package model receives a carbon-fiber rear spoiler and black, lightweight wheels, "STI" kidney grille inserts, exclusive fog light surrounds, a front lip spoiler and side extensions. The interior of the "GT-Package" gets Recaro seats, shift knob and steering wheel pad.

In terms of performance mods, the GT-Package gets a Bilstein suspension system, six-pot Brembo brakes and a strengthened driveshaft. Not too awful much to get excited over, really.

The lower-level BRZ tS features all of the same upgrades as the GT-Package model, minus the rear wing, Recaro seats and upgraded wheels.

The model will be limited to only 750 units, with 500 of them being BRZ tS models and 250 being BRZ tS GT-Package models.

Subaru BRZ

The standard BRZ was unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show and Subaru put it on sale in early 2012.

The BRZ is powered by a 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed boxer engine equipped with Toyota’s direct injection and port injection technology. It delivers a total of 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet torque. The engine is mated to either a standard six-speed manual transmission with a short-shift lever or with an optional six-speed automatic tranny that has an "S mode" for better shifting response and an "M mode" for optional shifting.

On the U.S. market the model is priced from $25,495.
