Once upon a time, it wasn't uncommon to see concept SUVs->ke145 that were essentially tougher and burlier versions of the domesticated production models. At first glance, the Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept seems to follow that template, but this trail-ready ride is hiding a Toyota Prius-->ke231like soul.

Based on the second-generation Tiguan,->ke1817 Volkswagen'->ke94s latest show car is powered by a two-motor plug-in hybrid system.->ke147 All-wheel drive is available in all of the hybrid powertrain's modes, giving the Tiguan GTE Active Concept the ability to take you off the beaten path with minimal environmental impact. At the very least, a full-electric->ke1030 off-roader allows drivers to experience the sounds of nature! Beneath the surface, this concept->ke169 is a thinly-disguised version of the next-generation Tiguan, which is due to arrive some time in 2017.

Pros

Exterior

The Tiguan GTE Active Concept presents as a serious off-roader, with increased ground clearance thanks to taller BF Goodrich tires. The front fascia has been modified to include a skid plate that uses removable polymer elements that can be easily replaced if damaged. Tow hooks have also been added. The LED headlights and C-shaped accent lighting are elements lifted from the production version of the new Tiguan, as are the longer wheelbase and full-width grille. A pair of spotlights has been integrated into the dark-colored roof panel to provide additional lighting for the trail. At the rear, a second set of tow hooks and an underbody skid plate are added.

Interior

A number of production-ready safety features are hidden beneath the surface, including a front-collision detection system and an active hood that helps protect pedestrians in the event of a collision. Automatic post-collision braking is also available. The center stack features a high-mounted shifter and a 9.2-inch touchscreen display that can also be manipulated via gesture control. Expect many of these active safety features to make appearances on the next-generation Tiguan--though the Tiguan GTE Active Concept's head-up display and gesture control may be a bit farther off.

The console provides a preview of the new 4MOTION Active Control unit, which allows the driver to select one of six different driving modes suited to various road surfaces and conditions. There's a GTE mode which enables all-wheel drive for sportier driving.

Drivetrain

Power is provided by a 148-horsepower turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder engine coupled to a pair of electric motors that add 54 horsepower up front and 114 horsepower at the rear. A six-speed DSG transmission is integrated with the hybrid system for efficient packaging. The Tiguan GTE Active Concept uses VW's 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. Zero to 60 mph comes up in about 6.4 seconds.

Plug-in hybrids are designed for going farther while using less, and the Tiguan GTE Active Concept is no different. The vehicle defaults to rear-wheel drive, full-electric power, and transfers torque to the front wheels if traction is lost. The battery is good for about 20 miles on- or off-road, and when it's depleted the gasoline engine kicks in as a generator to power the front and rear electric motors. There's also a hybrid mode in which the electric motors and gasoline engine both power the car. Range is about 580 miles on a 16.9 gallon fuel tank.

The completeness of this concept's plug-in hybrid powertrain suggests strongly that there will be a plug-in hybrid Tiguan in the lineup when the next-generation model arrives.

Conclusion

Volkswagen is no doubt trying to clear the controversy-waters before its next wave of new and updated products begins to arrive in 2017, with the new Tiguan. This concept gives us a good look at the tougher styling as well as hinting strongly at a hybrid version, and perhaps some much-needed good news in terms of VW's alternative-fuel vehicle lineup. Based on VW's new modular platform, the new Tiguan will have an available third-row seat thanks to a longer wheelbase, and should provide a shot in the arm to VW's somewhat moribund (in recent years, at least) SUV lineup.
