The annual GTI Fest at Lake Worthersee in Austria is currently underway, and per tradition, Volkswagen is bringing along a pair of custom rides built by a select group of apprentices to show off the next generation’s skill set. In addition to the GTI Next Level that we featured earlier this week, there’s also this spruced-up five-door wagon dubbed the GMOTION, intended to bring a combination of “sporting character, elegance, and off-road capabilities.”

What Makes The Volkswagen Golf Estate TGI GMOTION Special

Before we get into the oily bits, let’s first examine this thing’s exterior style, which brings a combination of white, red, grey, and black coloring from front to back. The various colors also use a combination of matte and gloss finishes to help give it a unique appearance.

The wheels are old-school in their multi-spoke style and large in their dimensions. Black tint was also added to the headlights, fog lights, and taillights, which looks great in conjunction with the large swaths of black paint enhancements.

The team also added a large cargo pod to the roof to give it even more practicality.

Moving inside, the Golf gets a variety of chrome paint added to the various trim bits, as well as red contrast stitching for the bolstered sports seats. Additional red bits were added to the dash surrounds, steering wheel, and seat belts. Further details include sewn honeycomb upholstery and an embroidered GMOTION logo as well.

Of course, you can’t forget the enormous subs and stereo system in the rear, or the retractable seating that flips out from the trunk space.

Making the thing go is a 131-horsepower 1.5-liter natural gas engine. Handling the cog swaps is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The car apprentices also managed to adapt the car to an AWD set-up, offering much more grip - exactly what you need if you’re trying to tackle the trailhead. To make it work correctly, the team tweaked the underbody and exhaust system to fit.

“The GMOTION shows that alternative powertrains are not only suitable for families but also for business use,” VW points out in the attached press release.

Rounding out the build is a new coilover suspension system, which enabled the ride height to be dropped by as much as 40 mm (1.6 inches). The brakes were also upgraded with new four-pot calipers.

The Volkswagen Golf Estate TGI GMOTION was built by 14 apprentices from VW’s vehicle plant in Zwickau, the engine plant in Chemnitz, and the Dresden Transparent Factory, ranging between 18 and 22 years of age. All told, it’s definitely an impressive machine, regardless of the age of the wrenches and brains behind it.
