What makes the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Final Edition special

It didn’t take Volkswagen long to unveil the 2019 Beetle Final Edition, did it? Maybe it was preempted by the leaked VIN documents. Maybe it was the plan all along. Either way, the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition is here, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for the departing Bug as the car’s production run ends this year. “The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America.

For its part, Volkswagen did its best to make it as “special” as it can be. For instance, Volkswagen is giving its customers a chance to choose the color of their special edition Beetles. Among the colors available are Pure White, Deep Black Pearl, Platinum Grey, Safari Uni and Stonewashed Blue. The latter two colors are unique to the Beetle Final Edition. If you opt to buy the Beetle Convertible Final Edition SEL you will get a model that has a soft brown top, that is unless you choose the Safari Uni color.

In addition to the body color options, the Beetle Final Edition is also fitted with chrome treatments, body-color side mirrors, and heated water nozzles. SEL trim versions, be it a coupe or a convertible, will also come with Bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and fog lights. At the back, the “Turbo” badge is replaced with a “Beetle” badge, presumably to highlight the status of this special edition model.

Move to the interior, and there’s a host of exclusive features in it, too. All Final Edition models, for example, come with a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, push-button start, stainless steel pedal caps, and automatic climate control. All trim options come with Volkswagen’s Composition Media infotainment system. SEL trim models also get a premium audio system courtesy of Fender. All Beetle Final Edition models also come with driver-assistance technology. SE models, in particular, include standard Blind Spot Monitor Rear Traffic Alert in its offerings. Meanwhile, Final Edition SEL models add standard front and rear Park Distance Control.

There are no engine upgrades to speak of. That’s hardly a surprise considering the Bug isn’t normally associated with power and performance credentials. Instead, customers receive the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. All versions of the Beetle Final Edition get a six-speed automatic transmission, which is responsible for sending the four-cylinder engine's power to the two rear wheels.

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition doesn’t come cheap. The coupe SE trim starts at $23,940 while the convertible SE trim starts at $28,190. Opt for the coupe SEL trim, and you’re looking at a base price of $26,890 while the convertible SEL trim starts at $30,890.
