Earlier this year, Volvo->ke188 unveiled the Concept Coupe -- the first of three concepts -- based on the company's new Scalable Product Architecture. The coupe was a design study commissioned to give us a glimpse of the future Volvo design direction.

Now under the watchful eye of Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President of Design, the Swedish car maker has unveiled the second concept->ke169 dubbed the Concept XC->ke412 Coupe.

Per Volvo's->ke188 naming convention, 'XC' is the prefix used for all things SUV->ke145. So, the Concept XC->ke412 is nothing but a showcase future Volvo SUV designs, and it will show its face at the upcoming 2014 Detroit Motor show->ke222. This being a concept, Volvo has not revealed any technical details as of yet.

Like all manufacturers, Volvo too is switching to modular construction in order to keep a tab on development costs. The company's Scalable Product Architecture will underpin all future Volvo cars, including crossovers->ke288, full-size SUVs and sedans->ke142.

Update 1/8/2014: With only a few days before it does its full undressing in Detroit, the Volvo Concept XC Coupe has dropped cover and revealed a few details about itself. You can see more after the jump.

Exterior

According to Volvo, the Concept XC is an example of traditional Scandinavian design and the integration of safety technologies. This lifestyle coupe concept has a familiar front end borrowed from its sibling, the Concept Coupe, which was shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor show->ke235. The wide, almost rectangular grille with the famous Volvo Diagonal logo element. The floating grille, as always is more pronounced.

What really separates the XC from the Concept Coupe are its massive, 21-inch wheels, stylized wheel arches and the raised roofline. The rest remains pretty similar to its lower sibling, like the cab-rearward setup that gives it a sense of sportiness, and the sleek beltline that runs the length of the vehicle.

The headlights are twin-horizontal clusters with a central indicator, and feature T-shapped daytime running lights. The wide wheel arches and the rear haunch can be clearly seen in the top view. The hood of the car has these small features that seem like some sort of breather element. The Concept XC Coupe is a three-door with large rear compartment and roof-box. We're big fans of the Volvo taillights that wrap around the rear profile of the car.

The Concept XC takes its taillight design a step further by introducing a slim LED strip that follows the curvature of the wheel arch giving it a more wider stance when viewed from the back. The short rear windshield and those rectangular tailpipes give it a sportier look.

Though this SUV looks sporty, don't mistake it for a highway queen, as it is ready to tackle rougher terrain, thanks to its side moldings and and skid plates. Sure, it's not a Jeep Wrangler->ke425 or Toyota FJ Cruiser->ke353, but it can head on a light off-road journey, if needed.

On top of all of this sexiness and utility, Volvo also put a lot of focus on safety. By using high-strength boron steel and structures that decouple, the Concept XC Coupe is significantly safer than anything Volvo makes today -- Volvo is well known as having some of the safest cars on the road already -- without making them any larger or heavier.

Interior

There is still very little to tell about the cabin of the XC Coupe, but judging by the images of the extreme sport gear tucked away in the below images, this bad-boy will have a creative cargo storage system.

We can also make out that the cockpit will be both luxurious and sporty, but there are no specifics to pass on, except those awesome-looking seats.
