This is good news for ardent fans of Whiskey, just like me. And if you are a motorcycle enthusiast also (why else would you be reading this here?), know that this is the best way you could spend your $184.71 on.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of New Zealand’s Southland legend Burt Munro's greatest production land-speed record, the New Zealand Whisky Collection, along with John Munro (Burt’s son) have created a batch of limited edition whiskey called the “Spirit of Munro”. (The name was given to Munro’s record-setting motorcycle.)

Half a century ago, one man from a small town in New Zealand dreamt of setting a land speed record on a 1920 Indian Scout. In 1962 at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Burt Munro’s dream finally came true at the age of 68 at 184.71mph. A record that was unbeaten until July 16 at the El Mirage 2017 by none other than Burt’s nephew who drove the 2017 Spirit of Munro Scout. (Ran at 186.41 mph)

John Munro happened to meet NZ Whisky Collection operations manager Grant Finn at a private cask launch and tasting at the New Zealand Whisky Collection in Oamaru. The pair hit it off and soon came up with attributing the legend with a unique blend of whiskey carefully selected by themselves. The 18-year-old blend comprises 70% single malt and 30% mixed. DoubleWood is a descriptor as the whiskey has been aged in American oak (ex-bourbon) for 12 years and French oak (ex-red wine) for 6 years.

The Whiskey stats are also purposefully made to resemble Burt’s motorcycle and record numbers. The batch will contain only 953 bottles, which is exactly the cc rating of Burt's bike. Each 500ml bottle will be priced at NZD$184.71 (USD $135), the same as Burt’s land-speed record of 184.71 mph. The concentration of whiskey is also brought down to 50 percent by volume to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the feat.

Out of the 953 bottles that will be made, the 35th whiskey bottle will be explicitly signed by John Munro insinuating the racing number used by Burt on his machine. This particular bottle will be auctioned off, and all proceeds from the auction will go to Riverton Coastguard of the Oreti Beach, a close place in Burt's heart.

Indian Motorcycles also eventually showed support after much hesitation. But with John Munro’s relationship with the company, and the assurance of this being a one-off endeavor, Indian came aboard along with E Hayes Sons, Meccaspresso, Invercargill City Council, Venture Southland, and Bill Richardson Transport World.

Since last Friday, the NZ Whiskey guys have sold through the first 150 pre-orders in two days. However, they have now released a second batch of 100 pre-orders, which will ship only late March/ early April 2018.

Do not miss the rarity that is bottled in this piece of art. Go ahead and grab the art before it is too late. Treat yourself by satiating that ravenous hunger for motorcycle and good old whiskey! Peace
