Owners have been complaining about it for years. Finally the Powers-That-Be have issued a recall on the 2014 through 2017 R1200 GS and R1200 GS Adventure from BMW for a problem with the upper triple clamp, though several complaints lodged about the bike losing power -- both underway and when idling -- are still in the wind. First things first, let's deal with the triple-clamp recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall on the GS and GS Adventure for a problem that causes the fork tube to separate from the fork cap. The first symptoms could be oil leaking from the top of the fork. As it continues to wear, the steering would feel sloppy and imprecise. If it gets to the point that the tube actually separates from the cap, you're going down in no uncertain terms.

What's The Buzz?

BMW expects the recall the begin in September, but honestly, if you see symptoms of this problem occurring, don't wait for notification from BMW. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Alternatively, owners can contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov and reference NHTSA Campaign No. 17V438000.

As far as the complaints of losing power, BMW responded with Technical Service Bulletin SB-10056719-9278 back in September 2014 instructing dealers to update the software in the DME unit to prevent false camshaft codes from putting the bike in a reduced power mode, referred to as limp mode. Is that what folks experience when they complain of their bike losing power? I'm not sure the symptoms described fit the bill, but that's between an owner and his dealer.
