In 2001, Honda launched the Activa in India which became the country’s first ever four-stroke automatic scooter. Its simplistic design and engine reliability made it an overnight success, which it reaps even today, 17 years after its first launch.

Today, the brand has already rolled out its 17,000,000’th Activa from its plant in Gujarat, making it the first scooter in the country to reach such a milestone. Out of which, a whopping 2 million of them came in the last seven months alone.

Now that is some mind-boggling sales figures that are making Honda the most loved brand when it comes to automatic scooters.

Recently, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd (HMSI) became the largest manufacturer of two-wheelers for its mother company, Honda. And the growth rate of the Activa alone is set at a phenomenal 180 percent since it was launched.

If statistics are to be believed, India is in the highest rankings in terms of growing economy.The market in India sees an upward trend ever since 2010, thanks to the improved rural infrastructure and rising income levels, affordability has become a norm to people from small towns and villages too.

Moreover, urban citizens find it easier to operate who wheelers on the streets due to increase in traffic congestion and availability of parking. This translates to an Activa being now sold in every 9 seconds for the past seven months.

Honda sold its first 2 million vehicles after seven years since its launch in 2001. The love for the scooter increased exponentially over the next 10 years where the company started selling it like hot cakes and minting money. The latest 2,040,134 units were sold from April 2017 to October 2017 alone.

The Activa began its life with a 102cc engine, which was later upgraded with a 109.2cc engine in 2009. After a successful journey spawning three generation, the Honda Activa has entered its 17 years of existence in India with its fourth generation model, the new Activa 4G.

It gets a BS-IV (Euro-IV) compliance, Combined-Braking System, USB charging and comfortable ergonomics, all for just ₹ 50730 ($770). With such affordability, people are ready to queue up for almost a month to get one for themselves.
