Did you know that the “selfie” was chosen as the word of the year by the Oxford Dictionary? Interesting trivia aside, Yamaha->ke301 is putting the word to good use by launching the #GetOutAndRide MotoGP->ke2192 photo contest, giving die-hard fans of the team a chance to meet riders Valentino Rossi->ke1462 and Jorge Lorenzo at the 2015 Red Bull Indy MotoGP race on August 6 to 10, 2015.

The premise of the competition is pretty simple. If you’re a fan of the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP racing team, all you need to do is visit a participating Yamaha dealership. Once you’re there, look for a Rossi display standee and/or a Rozzi or Lorenzo head cut-out, and a Yamaha motorcycle or scooter, take a picture of the whole gang, and post said picture on your Instagram or Twitter account, or Yamaha Motor USA’s official Facebook page. Oh, you’re going to have to include the #GetOutAndRide hashtag with that photo to be eligible for the competition.

Sounds pretty simple, right?

Well, it isn’t. To honor the spirit of competition in this contest, Yamaha’s not just picking a traditional selfie. Entries will be judged depending on originality, humor, creative use of the Rozzi and Lorenzo props, and what Yamaha calls an “expression of passion for Yamaha motorcycles or scooters.”

Fans of Yamaha should have no problem coming up with a unique pose that will get Yamaha’s attention. Stakes are definitely high here because the winner will get the chance to not only meet both Rossi and Lorenzo, but also get a VIP tour around the team’s garage.

All in all, Yamaha will pick six grand prize winners, all of whom will receive a trip for two to the Indy MotoGP this August. Even if you’re not chosen as a grand prize winner, you still have a chance to win a Rossi-autographed hat. It’s not exactly a trip to the Indianapolis GP, but it’s still a neat consolation prize, to say the least.

Why it matters

Yamaha’s #GetOutAndRide contest is a pretty straight-forward competition that should get its fair share of entries. The question is how creative these photos are going to be considering that there’s going to be a lot of people vying for any one of those six grand prizes.

I admit that I’m already thinking of what kind of creative photo I’ll be doing. I’m not going to divulge the details of my selfie with these Rossi and Lorenzo or cut-outs, nor will I disclose what kind of props I may or may not use in the photo.

What I do know is that I have to get really creative on this one. A lot of people will be joining this contest with an eye on that incredible grand prize. I don’t know about the rest of you, but a free trip to Indianapolis to watch the 2015 Red Bull Indy MotoGP race is a pretty cool prize in it of itself.

But to actually get some time with Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo? That’s what puts this competition over-the-top.

So start drawing up your own plans for your selfies, ladies and gentlemen. The competition is going to be tough, as it should be since we're all fighting over the same thing.
