Overview

Power For All

With the 450 SX‑F, KTM has a winning motorcycle in its range, which derives its potential from a high-capacity engine and a chassis perfectly tuned to the power unit. The 450 SX-F is the no. 1 choice for the official KTM factory team in the AMA Championship. No wonder; the compact SOHC engine guarantees brutal yet controllable power with its revolutionary injection technology. Above all, the 450 SX-F scores highly compared with other large 4-strokes in terms of performance and handling. Ideal for every motocrosser who sees plenty of torque, ample on-tap power and a controllable ride as their complete package.

2015 KTM 450 SX-F Features and Benefits:

Unrivalled Handling:

Wheels

The wheels fitted for MY 2015 feature black coated, high-end Excel rims with lightweight, CNC-machined hubs and spokes with lightweight aluminium nipples, allowing highest levels of stability to be achieved, while keeping weight to a minimum. New Dunlop Geomax MX 52 tyres were developed in collaboration with the KTM USA factory team and offer perfect traction with top performance. The new rear sprockets save 50 grams in unsprung mass.

Brakes

High-tech brakes from Brembo have always been standard equipment on KTM offroad bikes and, together with the lightweight wave brake discs, they are the measure of all things in terms of brake technology. As the best brakes in the motocross class, they remain unchanged for MY 2015.

Top Ergonomics:

Graphics

A new, refined graphic design with clear lines underlines the high demands made of a modern, state-of-the-art offroad motorcycle.

Bodywork

KTM engineers have focussed on designing the bodywork ergonomically and functionally in such a way that the whole motorcycle is in perfect harmony with the rider down to the very last detail. The front fender is a perfect example of how moulded plastic components can gain maximum stability with a well thought out structure and well-conceived attachment.

Seat

The ergonomically perfectly designed seat is equipped with a durable foam core, ensuring both generous comfort and high stability.

Airbox

At the same time, the design of the airbox guarantees optimum protection of the air filter from dirt plus maximum air throughput for the highest performance. Quick replacement of the twin-air filter - without tools and in a matter of seconds - has long since been an unrivalled KTM standard.

Fuel Tank

All models in the SX range are equipped with a 7.5 litre, lightweight polyethylene fuel tank. The fuel pump system used on the 4-stroke motocross models is the same as that used on the 4-stroke enduro models, thereby allowing optional fitting of larger tanks from the PowerParts range or from the enduro models.

Handlebar

All SX models are equipped with the extremely sturdy, tapered Renthal Fatbar 827 handlebar that features an offset specially designed to meet the demands of motocross. In accordance with the proven KTM standard, the handlebar can be fixed in a choice of four positions. For MY 2015, it is equipped with softer two-component grips to spare the rider's hands.

Professional Performance Potential:

Engine

The compact 60hp powerhouse, featuring an overhead camshaft and state-of-the-art electronic fuel injection system, excels with unrivalled performance and highly efficient power development. Newly developed oil strainer sealing rings are used for MY 2015 to provide better durability in the most extreme conditions and a longer service life.

Electric Start

Like all KTM 4-stroke motorcycles, the 450 SX-F can also be started simply at the press of a button. The electric starter can be an invaluable benefit, especially in the heat of a motocross battle.

Cylinder Head

In the cylinder head of the 450 SX‑F engine, an overhead camshaft actuates four ultra-light titanium valves via extremely stiff, DLC-coated rocker arms on the intake side. This configuration allows engine speeds of over 11,500 rpm to be achieved and makes a major contribution to the unique performance of the high-capacity KTM engine.

Piston

In the cylinder with a bore of 95 mm, an extremely light, box-in-box, forged piston works away, making a significant contribution to the engine's low vibration level and engine-speed strength on account of its low weight. The compression ratio is 12.6:1.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft on the 450 SX-F with a 63.4 mm stroke is equipped with a plain bearing in the lower conrod eye. Two press-fit bearing shells run directly on the crankshaft's crank pin. The engine's direct pressure lubrication system ensures the necessary oil supply for the bearing. This design is a key factor behind the extremely high engine speed and impressive peak power of the 450 SX-F engine. Another decisive benefit for the customer is that thanks to the plain bearing it has been possible to extend the crankshaft service interval.

Balancer Shaft

The laterally positioned balancer shaft acts simultaneously as a drive for the water pump. Thanks to the perfect counterbalancing and lower reciprocating weight of the power unit, it has been possible to keep engine vibration within narrow limits, even at the highest revs.

Clutch

The 450 SX‑F engine is fitted with the DDS (Damped Diaphragm Steel) clutch developed by KTM, which features a wear-free steel cage and extremely heat-resistant friction linings. This design is distinguished by use of a diaphragm spring instead of the otherwise customary conical springs, thereby reducing the operating force substantially. The diaphragm spring also provides space for integrated hub damping – a benefit in terms of traction and durability. The hydraulic clutch actuation system from Brembo guarantees smooth and very precise clutch control.

Transmission

The 450 SX‑F is equipped with a lightweight 4-speed transmission designed especially to match the characteristics of the big bore engine. The 450 SX‑F is supplied on the US market with a 5-speed transmission, which may be slightly heavier, but it is tailored to the requirements of American customers.

Engine Management System (EMS)

In conjunction with the revolutionary injector position developed by KTM, the Keihin engine management system, with electronic fuel injection and 44 mm throttle body, ensures spontaneous responsiveness and maximum engine performance. Numerous connectors on the wiring harness are enclosed in rubber grommets to protect them from steam-jet pressure. Various engine characteristics can also still be selected via the EMS, with a map-select switch available as a PowerPart. Furthermore, a user-setting tool (also available as an option) allows data to be read from the bike by laptop and the mapping, ignition and fuel injection to be modified in a matter of a few mouse clicks.

Superior Chassis:

Frame

The modern frame design of the SX models, comprising lightweight, high strength, chrome-molybdenum steel section tubes, combines maximum longitudinal stiffness with optimum torsional stiffness. A forged and milled cross-tube connects the two frame halves with the connecting rod of the linkage on the new SX frame for 2015. Omission of the weld seams leads to very precise manufacturing tolerances and greater safety - moreover, it saves another 60 grams of weight.

Linkage / Shock Absorber

The revamped damping system for MY 2015 features a new linkage with optimised geometry. The flatter progression with a higher initial rate ensures greater stability and lowers the rear end. In addition, the new design saves another 40 grams of weight. The fully adjustable WP 5018 shock absorber has been completely retuned to suit the new linkage.

Triple Clamps

High quality, CNC-machined triple clamps have long since been standard equipment at KTM. They ensure precise handling and provide a perceptible boost to the flexing characteristics and hence the responsiveness of the telescopic fork. The new O-ring carrier for the lower steering head bearing, a revised shaft tube and the new steering head bolt save another 40 grams.

Fork

The fully adjustable upside-down fork from WP Suspension has been perfectly tuned to the new rear wheel damping system and the new 22 mm front axle (formerly 26 mm) for MY 2015. The new axle provides a better feel for the front wheel and also saves a further 40 grams. The new fork stubs now feature an offset of 33 mm instead of 35 mm, which together with increased trail deliver greater ride stability. Furthermore, they accommodate newly developed, 50 gram lighter fork protectors.

Quotes

“Most of the changes that were made to the 2014 KTM 450 Factory Edition model were rolled over to the 2015 KTM 450 SX-F (except for all new fork settings and oil pick up screen O-rings). KTM changed the front-end geometry by moving the front axle back from 35mm to 33mm with less offset to the axle lug, however the triple clamp offset remains the same as the 2014 model. The new closed cartridge 4CS fork is lighter in weight and has a lighter spring with different valving. Although the 4CS is not a Separate Function Fork it does have a compression adjuster on top of one fork leg and a rebound adjuster on the other for easier tuning. The shock has an extra 4mm of stroke and the linkage pull rod is 2.5mm longer. The crossover tube (the part of the frame that the shock linkage bolts to) is now made from a single, forged, one-piece design that KTM claims makes it a more rigid and precise mounting point. Finally, the bike comes stock with Dunlop MX 52 tires and a long awaited, beautifully powder-coated orange frame.” ----- Dirt Rider“Ergonomically the 2015 KTM 450 SX-F remains the same slim and comfortable bike that it was for 2014. The bodywork design allows for seamless movement around the bike without any boot catching or other annoying things going on. For 2015 KTM have gone with a fresh graphic design using a lot more white compared to previous models, both myself and Dylan are huge fans of this design. The added white, paired with the orange frame, black Excel rims, black spokes and polished hubs really stands out. One downside is that you’ll struggle to make the bike look much better than it does in stock form!” ----- Moto Online
