In one of the most exciting races all season, Lewis Hamilton stormed to victory and his second win of the 2010-racing season.

Hamilton, who won the last race in Turkey, crossed the line ahead of his teammate Jenson Button, a Ferrari->ke252, and the Red Bull pair of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

Fernando Alonso finished third in his Ferrari, after he led a few laps in the middle segment of the race.

Starting from pole position, Hamilton led on three separate occasions before taking the lead for good on lap 50. It was his third win at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The race in Canada became a race of the tires and who could make the best use out of the two different sets. Both hard and soft compounds suffered from degradation, far more than anybody had thought. The tire issue helped spur on one of the best races all season, as tire strategy and wear left fans wondering who would come out on top.

At the start, Hamilton had a clean getaway ahead of Vettel, who was on the front row because something was found in Mark Webber’s fuel that caused him to lose five places on the grid.

McLaren->ke284, who were running soft tires, were forced to pit early, giving the Red Bull’s a chance to take the lead on their harder tires. Many had thought an early safety car would be the only way that the McLarens could win, but that safety car never came. That’s not to say there weren’t any incidents at the start. Sauber’s Pedro de la Rosa found himself skidding across the first-corner grass and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi collided after starting fifth and sixth.

Then, Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi ran into the wall on the front straight, but he managed to get his car to the grass, avoiding the safety car.

So, after an event filled first lap, the rest of the early laps were all about tires. How long could the McLaren’s stay on those soft compounds?

The answer came quickly, as both cars needed a tire change in the first handful of laps. That being said, the hard tires didn’t fair too well either. Vettel and Webber needed a pit stop on lap 13. During these pit stop rounds, Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Buemi led for the first time in his young career, but it didn’t last. A failed pass attempt by Alonso in the tight hairpin allowed Hamilton to retake the lead.

The race drama continued as Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher and Renault’s Robert Kubica dueled across the grass on the chicane, forcing Schumacher to pit for the second time. Up front, Webber began to pull away, opening up a 12 second lead on Hamilton, but no matter how hard the Australian drove, his tires weren’t going to make it.

On lap 50, with tires close to death, Hamilton overtook Webber. The Red Bull was forced to pit and go on the option tires, putting him back to fifth place. Six laps later, Alonso found himself behind the slower Karun Chandhok, helping Jenson Button take second place from the Ferrari.

The win puts Hamilton into the points lead, with Webber six points back. Nico Rosberg came sixth, followed by Kubica and the Force India team of Liuzzi and Adrian Sutil.
