2023 Toyota RAV4 Performance and Capability

Silver 2022 Toyota RAV4 SE Hybrid
Toyota

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 comes with two engines, one naturally-aspirated, and the other, a hybrid engine. The plug-in hybrid is reserved for a different review. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, taken from the Camry that's good for 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque with an eight-speed automatic. The optional powertrain is Toyota's latest hybrid system engine, which is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with electric motors that is good for 219 horsepower (total torque isn't rated) and a CVT. Front-wheel drive is the standard configuration on most models while AWD is optional on both engines and standard on a few models. Towing capacity ranges from 1,500 pounds to 3,500 pounds depending on the model and engine choice.

Expect zippy performance with either engine. The standard 2.5-liter N/A engine gets the job done just fine, but it's not overly exciting. The eight-speed automatic is a great partner for this engine, and there's always a gear to be in for optimal fuel economy. The hybrid engine is the one for more power and zip. The hybrid 2.5-liter engine provides that instant torque that you expect with an electric motor, and it also gives a healthy bump up in fuel economy. The hybrid comes with the usual Toyota CVT transmission which eliminates gear changes altogether. But both engines can get a bit noisy under hard acceleration where the engine is working hard.

Front-wheel drive is the standard configuration for the RAV4 on most models (some feature AWD as standard). The pure gasoline engine features a mechanical AWD system with a differential and driveshaft. The hybrid features an AWD-E system, where there's no mechanical link between the engine and rear axle; the rear axle is driven by an electric motor. The TRD model features a torque-vectoring AWD system, which is the ultimate system for AWD.

Like most new Toyota models, the RAV4 rides on the TNGA platform. Toyota's New Global Architecture gives the vehicle a lower center of gravity and that in turn gives better handling and driving dynamics. While this is still no sports SUV, it doesn't handle badly at all for what it is. The TNGA platform is much stiffer than the outgoing platform, and that translates to a much better "screwed together" feeling. The driving dynamics are greatly improved over previous RAV4 models. The "floaty" ride isn't really there anymore, and the car has a nice buttoned-down feel.

Exterior Design

2022 Toyota Rav4

The exterior design of the RAV4 is very striking. We start with a huge grille with a very prominent Toyota badge that houses the radar for the RCC. The headlights have been redesigned recently as well, and are now much more similar to the RAV4 Prime headlights. Fog lights are optional. Depending on which model you order, you get different front fascias. But all are very distinct. Moving over to the side profile of the RAV4, we even see some hints of the BMW X5.

The windows are large, and the mirrors are large as well; outside visibility is fantastic in the RAV4. In the rear, LED combination tail lamps add a snazzy flare to the design. Wheel designs are abundant ranging from steel wheels with wheel covers to very sharp black and chrome alloy wheels. There's a design for everyone depending on what your taste is. For colors, there are tons of options depending on the trim and model you order. The higher the trim, the better the RAV4 looks.

The interior of the RAV4 ranges from utilitarian to posh depending on which trim you order. Cloth upholstery is standard while Softex synthetic leather is an option on the higher trims and standard on Limited. Blue stitching on certain models adds a sporty flare and some contrast. The dashboard features a large screen in the center that pops up like an iPad. The gauges, depending on which model, range from standard needles and faces to a large screen with customizable graphics. Either way, it's a classy and inviting environment.

Faux chrome trim and aluminum trim adds a bit of contrast to the cabin, but without looking tacky and cheap. Dual-zone climate control is an option as are heated/cooled seats and a heated wheel. Heated rear seats are also available. Drive modes are also part of the package with sport, eco, and normal. AWD models get terrain settings too. An available JBL stereo adds a nice touch to the sound system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard. Smart key functionality is available on higher trims as is a moon roof with the option of a panoramic moon roof. The panoramic moon roof is absolutely gorgeous. Overall, the interior of the RAV4 feels well-built and solid if not utilitarian. Expect this interior to last the test of time.

Main Competition

The RAV4 is in an extremely competitive segment. There are tons of great options in this segment, including the Honda CR-V, the Subaru Forester, the KIA Sportage, the Mazda CX-5, the Ford Escape, and so on... but the RAV4 can definitely hold its own. The biggest selling point of the RAV4 is Toyota's reputation for quality and reliability as well as fuel economy.

The fuel economy is fantastic for a N/A four-cylinder engine and the hybrid fuel economy is outstanding. Is the RAV4 the best option, maybe, depending on what you're looking for in an SUV? It's a fantastic all-around vehicle that does everything well. The RAV4 is a little pricier than its competition, however, with that price comes a lot of bang for the buck and again that reputation for quality and reliability from Toyota.
