This is the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, an all-electric crossover designed to compete in the compact luxury segment. Now Chevrolet does have a leg up, amongst the big three, as it was the first to introduce all-electric models like the Bolt and Bolt EUV early on. Now, the Blazer EV opens a new dimension for the bow-tie brand, which has set its goal to have an all-EV lineup by 2030.

Chevy first teased the Blazer EV SS back in March this year. Riding on the popular versatile Ultium platform shared with several models in GM’s portfolio like the Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq, the Blazer EV comes in several different permutations and combinations. The sheer level of configurations that the Blazer EV offers with regard to its drivetrains and powertrains is a segment first.

Chevrolet Blazer EV Performance And Capability

The Chevrolet Blazer EV is available across four trims :

  • 1LT
  • 2LT
  • RS
  • SS

You can choose from three different battery sizes with the 1LT offering an estimated EPA range of 247 miles and the RS with the biggest battery pack and an estimated EPA range of 320 miles. You also have three different drivetrain options. The base model 1LT only comes in front-wheel drive with a single motor up front.

2LT features front-wheel drive as standard along with the optional all-wheel drive with a dual motor setup. The RS is perhaps the most flexible offering a single motor that powers either the front or rear axle, or an all-wheel drive option with a dual-motor setup. Top-of-the-line SS trim comes standard with all-wheel drive. One-pedal driving and regenerative braking is standard across all trims of the Blazer EV.

Chevy hasn't revealed the power figures for all trims, but putting the SS badge on, means this thing should pack some impressive numbers, and undoubtedly the most potent of the bunch with 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet available on tap is the Blazer EV SS. It also gets a Wide Open Watts (WOW) mode that will help it hit 60 mph in just under four seconds. You also get performance Brembo brakes up front and a special sport-tuned chassis.

All Blazer EVs right from the base model support 190 kW DC fast charging, allowing to add up to 78 miles of range in just 10 minutes. AC charging takes place at 11.3 kW. Now do keep in mind that Chevy's software-based BEV3 electrical architecture could see the charge rate improve in the future, courtesy of the over-the-air updates possible via GM's ULTIFI. Also standard across the board is Ultium Charge 360, which lets you access over 100,000 charging stations across the United States and Canada.

Exterior Design

Red Chevrolet Blazer EV
Chevrolet

The exterior design of the Blazer EV is familiar but different. You can clearly tell that the styling draws inspiration not just from the gas-powered Blazer that debuted in 2019, but also from several other Chevy models. Take that front end for instance. The resemblance to the Camaro is uncanny.

The bulge on the hood is a nice touch indeed. The SS Trim features a more aggressive front facia, helping to distinguish itself from the other trims. All Blazer EVs come with LED lighting as standard, but RS and SS Trims also come with a lightbar with signature lighting animations and an illuminated bow tie.

Moving on to the sides you've got some nice flowing lines that run the length of the vehicle. As this Blazer is an all-electric vehicle, it doesn't have to adhere to the proportions of a traditional gas-powered vehicle. The Blazer EV has a low and wide stance, accentuated with its long wheelbase and short overhangs. It has a really athletic form factor.

The side profile is gorgeous and the C-shaped design element on the fender harks back to Vette's of old. In fact, this element hides the power-operated charge port, on the driver-side fender. The rising beltline and what appear like a haunch adds muscle and since this is a crossover, the obligatory contrasting fender flares were a given. Rim sizes range from 19 inches on the base model 1LT to 22 inches on the sporty SS trim, available in a range of finishes.

Onto the rear and you have a wrap-around boomerang-style taillight design which also features animations similar to lights up front. The SS trim gets a bright red badge which conveys its sporty intent while the Blazer badge itself contains the Ultium logo (highlighted by three blue horizontal lines), which denotes that this one is an EV. As for the rest of the design, it's standard fare with a spoiler and diffuser that breaks up the derriere.

RS and SS trims are available with a two-tone paint scheme, but you can also get it with the 1LT and 2LT if that's your thing.

Available Colors:

  • Black
  • Summit White
  • Iridescent Pearl Tricoat
  • Sterling Gray Metallic
  • Radiant Red Metallic
  • Red Hot
  • Galaxy Gray Metallic
  • Riptide Blue Metallic

Interior Quality And Technology

Chevrolet

Chevrolet has gone all out with the cabin of the Blazer EV. This goes for everything, including the design, materials used, the technology, and the space that it offers. While the design is in keeping with the times, Chevy has maintained a good mix of buttons, dials, and knobs, unlike several automakers who're going for a screen-only setup. The Camaro-inspired rotary turbine-style air vents sure do stand out and add a touch of class.

Having said that, GM has thrown in an all-new freeform 17.7-inch screen, which is one of the biggest in the class and is available across the range, right from the base model. The colors and graphics are razor-sharp and everything looks vibrant on this panel. The driver meanwhile gets an all-digital 11.0-inch digital display, with the SS also coming in with a heads-up display for the driver. RS and SS trims get a flat-bottom steering wheel.

As for interior themes, the SS trim is available in a bold Adrenalin red color scheme. But if that's too loud, you can always go with a more muted color like black with contrasting medium ash gray and orange accents. As for the passenger room, the Ultium platform makes way for a nice room cabin. The panoramic roof on the SS trim floods the cabin with natural light.

The long wheelbase means that you get excellent legroom in both rows. The flat floor in the rear, means, three passengers' abrest should be no problem at all. The SS trim gets heated and ventilated seats in both rows, while the RS offers rear-seat heating as an option. To elevate the cabin experience, ambient lighting is standard across all variants.

Some clever technologies on the Blazer EV, include the proximity sensors for the charge port door and the tailgate, which can detect if someone with a programmable fob or key is standing behind the vehicle and open the hatch automatically.

Main Competition

Now the base 1LT Blazer EV will potentially go up against models like the base Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6, and the Volkswagen ID.4. However, since Chevy has only released the performance figures for the Blazer EV in SS trim, it was only fair to compare it to similarly priced compact crossover EVs competing in the sport and luxury end of the market. Think of models like the Mustang Mach-E GT, the Audi Q4 E-Tron Sportback, the Volvo C40 Recharge, the Tesla Model Y Performance, and the recently launched Genesis GV60. Here's how the Chevy stacks up against the competition in terms of performance and range.

The Blazer name runs long and deep in Chevy’s history. GM revived the name back in 2019 with a crossover, but it didn’t really gain much interest. But this new Blazer in EV Avatar, well it's onto something. With its stylish design, a vast array of battery sizes and drivetrain options, and that tech-laden interior, this Blazer will certainly garner a lot more interest.
