A new electric personal vehicle concept tries to convince the car makers to think about a cleaner type of car.
This compact and clean electric vehicle, designed by Sergio Luna, forgets about all the aspects of the modern car and uses a pod-like exo-skeleton to create something that looks more like a ball than a car. Inspired by the Segway vehicle this concept has only two wheels, and a panoramic roof that is also the front window. It can accommodate one person that, looking at the pictures, I can’t imagine how he will get in.
The car is powered by four electric motors, two in each wheel, but it also has batteries for keeping the energy.
This year at the LA Auto Show Design Challenge you will be able to admire an interesting new concept from Mitsubishi, the MMR25 Rally Racer. This futuristic race car is an all-electric race car powered by four lightweight, high-efficiency, in-wheel electric motors whose output is boosted with the help of eight supplemental motors. The battery packs are positioned low to the ground in the center and on each side of the vehicle, enhancing the stability and lowering the center of gravity.
The interesting thing about the MMR25 concept is the omnidirectional wheel design that allows the vehicle to be driven forward while pointing the nose of the vehicle in any direction.
The concept has no window, reducing the vehicle weight, but the driver’s cabin has a 360 degree panoramic screen that displays the images taken by the outside cameras.
The Peugeot RD Concept, designed by Carlos Arturo Torres Tovar from Columbia is one of the ten finalists of the 5th edition of the Peugeot Design Contest 2008.
The RD concept is a 3 wheels car perfect for traveling through the busy traffic of a city. The interesting thing about this concept is that the car is able to change direction and to become more compact during heavy traffic and low speeds. The big front window offers the driver the best view of the surroundings, and also offers all the necessary information the diver commands talking to the car. The concept has no doors, only the front window that is also the roof of the car.
The RD is a great looking concept that could change the way we travel through the big cities.

Engineers and designers are usually at odds when it comes to making cars.
What makes a car beautiful and unique, will also make it tougher to manufacture.
The Michelin Challenge Design tries to bridge this gap by establishing a closer relationship with the design community—combining technical innovation with transportation design to create vehicles that consumers want to buy and will enjoy driving.
One of the more innovative concepts presented at this year Michelin Challenge Design is the single passenger Drop. The Drop comes from the mind of Rubem De Floriani, a 26-year-old product design graduate of Catholic University at Rio de Janeiro.
Drop was developed following a new vehicle modality where people instead of being isolated by their vehicles; they become part of a mobile community. Each person is able to personalize his/her car to the individual personality. The innovation of the Drop comes from its ability to change angles and use less road space depending upon needs or its location.
A new concept car was design recently by Ondrej Jirec, a design student from the Czech Republic who is beginning his studies at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California in 2008. The new concept car called Audi O, a diesel/electric hybrid that combines perfectly an innovative audio system with a sporty hatchback.
The exterior design of the Audi O is close to the Audi styling: the big front grille and the LED headlights. The doors have glass windows running along the bottom edge, and at the rear of the car the pullout door echoes the design of the squared off Audi grille.
The interior is bright and roomy thanks to the panoramic roof. To keep out the external noise that may interfere with the sound system the engine compartment is separated by a double firewall. Audi O has a unique audio system with Internet connectivity and a build in 650 GB hard drive.
A Bluetooth system allows the car to connect to other Audi O cars and play music (one car is the source of the music, while the others serve as speakers). Another interesting feature of the Audi O is the pullout rear door fitted with a DJ set with mixing decks. The decks can also be removed and used anywhere outside the car.
This interesting concept will please not only the music lovers but also the car enthusiasts that enjoy driving their car surrounded by music.
If you think that today’s "green" cars are something fabulous that will save the planet thanks to the fuel they use, you are wrong! The Peugeot ONE concept could be the solution for a cleaner environment.
Peugeot ONE is a new type of non polluting vehicle, a very strange and special one that runs on solar energy. Designed by Omar Ivan Huerta Cardoso, this amazingly and innovative concept uses its windshield to capture the solar energy and transforms it into the energy needed by the car. This single seater uses a Gyroscope system for the stability, and features a rather unique suspension system.
The ONE concept is design to make you feel "one" with the nature and the environment, but also to make you feel one with the machine, thanks to its strange shape.
A new concept that entered the Peugeot Design Contest is the OMNI Concept created by Darko Markovic. The Peugeot OMNI is a strange and unusual car that uses the Omni wheel concept of the great designer from past to make sure that there are no parking problems in today’s cities. Thanks to the Omni wheel the car can spin and turn around at an instant making it easy to maneuver.
The Omni wheel idea belongs to the Swedish automobile designer Bengt Ilon, who created in 1973 a wheel that could move in any direction at a given time. His idea was to attach many roller-wheels around the rim of the main wheel to enable the wheel to spin in any direction and change angles at an instant. The rollers were oriented at an angle of 45 degrees with the wheels axis of rotation.
The Peugeot OMNI is an awesome concept that tries to show us the car of tomorrow.
The 5th Edition of the Peugeot Design Contest has an interesting theme: “Imagine the Peugeot in the worldwide megalopolis of tomorrow”. This theme makes the designers that enter the contest to include in their concept car design environmental awareness, social harmony, interactive mobility and economic efficiency.
Alexei Mikhailov entered in the Peugeot Design Contest with his eco-friendly concept car Henosis (in Greek it means unity, oneness). Alexei Mikhailov design a vehicle that unites the driver with the machine, in such a way that the car can analyze the environment, driver’s mood, expression, and body temperature to provide the most comfortable and safe driving experience.
The design wants to explore the new possibilities of car construction in order to obtain the perfect body. The car, made from light weight carbon nano tube polished aluminum, looks like a space vehicle made not to be driven on the road, but to explore new planets.
You know how difficult is to find a 1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe?
There are only six original cars in the world.
They rarer than a Bugatti Veyron and costs multiple times more — that is if you can even find a person willing to part with one.
Their wins include Le Mans, Sebring, and Daytona, and it even set some land speed records along the way.
Shelby Distribution has announced that it will offer replicas of the celebrated GT. Just like the originals, the new Shelby Daytonas will be built around an aluminum body. But with time also comes improvement, and the coupe will utilize the updated suspension system that can be found in the MkII version of the Superformance Coupe.
Just like the Shelby Cobra, there are kits already available to build replica Dayton Coupes. But unlike most of them, this one is built by Carroll Shelby’s Shelby Distribution. That means these Daytona Coupe will be official cars listed in the Shelby Registry.
Andrea Pininfarina died this morning at 51 years in an accident while riding his Vespa motorcycle on the outskirts of Turin. Police said that the chairman and CEO of the well known chassis company was killed after a collision with a Ford Fiesta.
Andrea Pininfarina (1957-2008) graduated from Polytechnic of Turin as a mechanical engineer in 1981; in 1982 he began his career in the United States with Freuehauf Corp. In 1983 he joined "Industrie Pininfarina S.p.A.", first as Coordinator and then as Program Manager of the Cadillac Allante’ project. In 1987 he was appointed Co-General Manager of "Industrie Pininfarina S.p.A." and eventually, in 1988, he got the position of General Manager, followed by the appointment of Managing Director in 1994 and of Managing Director of “Pininfarina Ricerca e Sviluppo S.p.A.” in 2000. Since July 1st 2001, he has held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Pininfarina S.p.A. and, since May 12th 2006, he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors too.
Lotus Eigne, design by David Fearnley, is an electric sports-car concept that wants to offer more practicality from the Lotus sports-car.
The exterior design of the Eigne channels air to the back of the car making it very aerodynamic, and improves the handling by creating extra down force thanks to the integrated spoiler from the back. The large intake from the car allows the cool air to reach the rear in-wheel motors.
The interior is also amazing! David Fearnley designed a very modern interior for the Eigne that can accommodate the driver in front (the weal is on the middle of the car), two adult passengers and a baby seat (positioned behind the driver and between the back seats). Because of the center seat the doors incorporate a section of the roof to allow access to the car.
Local Motors, a new American car company focused on building cars for the most influential market, car enthusiasts, has decided to build its first prototype: the Sangho Kim’s design Rally Fighter. The decision to build Sangho’s design was influenced by the community support, focus on car enthusiasts, timeliness and community collaboration.
Ben Messmer, Lead Designer at Local Motors explains the reason why Rally Fighter was choose to be built: “This design has aroused incredible feedback and collaboration from the Community. By promoting discussion and collaboration early on, we are able to design cars we know people want; there is no guessing.”
The Rally Fighter will try to fulfill the desires of the American drivers: American authenticity, mechanicals showing, presence of excellence, playing vs. posing.
CLEVER stands for Compact Low Emission VEhicle for URban Transport and is the result of three years of research and design. This vehicle combines the safety of a microcar, and the useful maneuverability of a motorbike, all while powered by a natural gas fueled engine.
This vehicle that looks a lot like the Brinks Dynamics Carver is powered by a 230cc BMW engine modified by the Institute Français du Pétrole to accept the natural gas. This engine produces 17 hp and a maximum torque of 15.5 Nm at 6,300 rpm giving the CARVER a top speed of 62 mph. The gas bottle fuel tanks provide a range of approximately 93 miles.
This three-wheel vehicle leans, just as a motorcycle during cornering (exactly like the Carver) using two hydraulic actuators to rotate the cabin around a maximum of 45° each way. The system is controlled by a computer which calculates the desired lean angle by taking into account speed, tilt angle of the cabin, and lateral acceleration.
Brinks Dynamics Carver is a different type of vehicle, one that steers like a car but banks like a motorcycle. Perfect for driving through traffic the Carver offers you speed, maneuverability and a modest fuel consumption of 49 mpg. It banks from left to right in just a second. This unrivalled agility lets you cope with any emergency situation, avoid obstacles, and makes for sheer exhilarating fun.
Carver, developed by aeronautical engineers, has a jetfighter-like cockpit hiding the integral welded steel chassis providing safety for the driver and passenger. The front window merges with the body-colored roof panel that can be easily detached to enjoy a panoramic view from all angles. The most important thing of this vehicle is the Dynamic Vehicle Control system which automatically adjusts the tilt angle of the cockpit to the speed and acceleration of the vehicle, enabling the Carver to lean before cornering, while the power assisted front wheel steering and active rear wheel steering offers stability.
More strange environmentally friendly vehicles appear on the roads these days. The Cree SAM is one of them. Produced by a Swiss company Cree Ltd in 2001, Cree SAM is a pretty good looking vehicle, even cool if you think its looks like a cockroach is cool. This 3-wheeled environmentally friendly zero emissions vehicle powered by an electric motor is made from aluminum backbone chassis and independent front suspension with a transverse leaf spring. It also has safety measures like three-point seatbelts along with an integrated roll bar, and it weighs only 1,500 pounds.
The Cree SAM is powered by a 15kW motor that produces 80Nm of torque and uses for “fuel” six individual batteries which produces 168 volts. The batteries can be recharged in 6 hours (70% in 2 hours), and offer a range of just 43 miles. With two people on board (seats are arranged in tandem and protected by the air-filled, double wall, thermoplastic body) the vehicle can reach 30mph in 7 seconds, and a top speed of 53 mph.
The Peel P50 is a three-wheeled micro-car manufactured in 1963 and 1964 by the Manx Peel Engineering Company. This strange ugly car was designed as a town car and was advertised as capable of seating “one adult and a shopping bag”.
Recognized by the Guinness World Records as the smallest street-legal car the P50 is just 53 in long and 39 in wide, with a weight of only 132 lb. The vehicle’s only door was on its left side, and equipment included a single windscreen wiper, and only one headlight. Standard colors were Daytona White, Dragon Red, and Capri Blue. Most of the interior space is occupied by a single seat, constructed in hammock form over a steel tubular frame. The foot controls were of normal car type, and a hand lever was provided to start the engine, with gear selection via a quadrant mounted lever on the steering column. Instrumentation was non-existent, with even the speedometer being considered unnecessary on such a small vehicle.
The P50 shone in a variety of tests including a 15 mile road test in London, where it completed the route a full 30 minutes ahead of a saloon car of the day.
Messerschmitt Tg500 Tiger is a mini car that was build from 1957 to 1961, as a four-wheeled, high-performance version of Fritz Fend’s Messerschmitt car by a German company caled Messerschmitt. Messerschmitt was founded in 1923 by Willy Messerschmitt to build light airplanes, and by 1926 had expanded into transport planes, but after the Second World War a large part of the Messerschmitt plant had been destroyed, and in addition, Germany was prohibited from producing airplanes so they decided to build pretty unusual vehicles called bubble cars.
The advantage of the bubble car over the motorcycle or motor scooter was that they kept their occupants warm and dry. The disadvantages were that they looked odd, and usually had inferior performance.
Twike offers you futuristic design, forward-looking technology, low energy consumption and high efficiency, a revolutionary driving experience and tomorrow’s mobility for today’s people.
What is this strange vehicle? Twike is a human-electric hybrid vehicle designed to carry two passengers and cargo. It can be driven in electric-only mode or electric + pedal power mode. Pedaling extends the range of the vehicle but does not substantially add to the vehicle’s top speed. The vehicle cannot be driven solely by using pedal power. Regenerative antilock braking captures energy from deceleration to recharge computer-controlled batteries.
The Twike’s aerodynamic shape, constructed of lightweight materials (like aluminum and plastic), is as efficient flowing through the air as it is pleasing to the eye, and the soft convertible top adds to the fun of driving. Different models, options, and colors offer room for individual expression.
Do you think that all strange and bizarre vehicles are build today? You are wrong; many of them were built a long time ago.
A good example of a strange car build 74 years ago is the McQuay Norris Streamliner produced in 1934 and built to be driven by McQuay-Norris. The McQuay-Norris Streamliner’s chassis and running gear were based on a unmodified 1932-33 Ford V8, and the aerodynamic bodywork was made from steel sheet metal attached to wood framing, with the exception of the doors, which were aluminum. The windows were made from Plexiglas.
This vehicle was not created in an attempt to break any land-speed records, instead it was intended as rolling test beds and promotional vehicles for the McQuay-Norris Company of St. Louis, which manufactured replacement pistons, rings, bearings and other automotive bits and pieces that one might need in order to rebuild an automobile engine or chassis. This is the main reason why the interior was fixed with many dials and instruments to observe performance and engine condition.
What happens when you take an engine from a tank and put it in to a car? You create something special, you create the Blastolene Special and you sell it to who else than Jay Leno!
This car that looks like a roadster on steroids was build by Randy Grubb. He used a 29-liter WWII M47 Patton tank engine that produces 810bhp (@2800rpm) and 1560 pound-feet (@2400rpm) of torque and an aluminum and wood body obtaining a car that weighs only 9500 pounds which is 1/11th the weight of the original tank from which the engine was used.
At the beginning there were some problems with the Blastolene Special, but after the implication of Jay Leno the car was a success. Thanks to his recommendations the car has an Allison HD4060 6-speed transmission, the engine was powered up to 1600 horsepower and they even succeeded an astonishing 5 mpg.
Quovis is a strange car specially build o be driven directly from a wheelchair for those with reduced or impaired mobility.
In essence, Quovis is a smart, fully automatic city car offering all of the advantages of style, image and practicality along with unparalleled ease of access for those wishing to drive without transferring from their wheelchair. A single press of the remote control key fob instructs the rear tailgate and integral compact ramp system to immediately and smoothly deploy, affording unhindered access to the driving position where the wheelchair is solidly secured.
The ramp and the tailgate automatically close when you turn the ignition key. Dual electronic accelerator ‘paddles’ are mounted directly onto the steering wheel, which is in itself electronically assisted to offer super responsive power steering, whilst braking is achieved manually via an extended left hand push lever.
ANVIL is a low speed vehicle made by the American ATV maker Tomberlin legal for road use. This vehicle that costs around $8,000 provides a non-polluting, zero emission alternative to travel. With a top speed of 35 mph this electric car can be charged overnight on a standard 110 volt outlet and it has a range of 40 miles.
The wheel track of the ANVIL is wider than some automobiles which add to appearance (ANVIL is one of the most aggressive looking vehicle on the road), stability and safety. The rear axle has also been pushed back to accommodate a folding, forward facing, rear seat.
I know that the ANVIL is not one of the fastest electric vehicles out there, you can’t travel many miles with it, and looks like a golf cart but is a choice for those who are not in a hurry and are care for the environment.
And I really mean short trips because you don’t want anyone else to see you in that car (at least I don’t want to), except when you’re on the golf course. This small car, road legal, with a battery autonomy of 30 miles is produced by a company called Global Electric Motorcars (GEM), a division of Chrysler.
I know, this is another boring electric vehicle that operate on a 72-volt battery system and plug into a standard 110-volt outlet that can be recharged in approximately six to eight hours, and has the “amazing” top speed of 25 mph. But what impressed me was the variety o vehicles based on a similar design, and the ways this mini-car can be used: trips to the dock, golf course or club, for transporting equipment in warehouses, or even making daily trips to the market, school or office, even the police use the GEM car, so they have to be good.
If you buy a GEM car you can chose some optional features like the color, a 7.0 horsepower motor, an audio system, dash-mounted fans, a dome light, grab handles, even heated seats, and other interesting things.
The electric car is becoming more usual on the streets so a group of Japanese companies in collaboration with the designers of Italy’s IDEA Institute decided that it’s time for an electric limousine so they build KAZ (Keio Advanced Zero-Emission vehicle).
It took them 5 years and $4 million, but they did it. This environmental limousine can accommodate eight people, has eight wheels, weighs 6,578 lb, and it’s powered by 84 lithium-ion batteries that can work for about 186 miles with a single charge.
You remember Batman (first the comic books, then the movies), the story about a rich man that has nothing better to do then to dress like a bat in the night and fight crime. Who cares about that? I don’t! K, the movies are not so bad, there’s some nice action going on, but the cars are great. I mean Batman’s cars of course. They look great, they have a lot of gadgets, they are fast, and most of them are made on a computer, but not the car from Batman Begins.
Traffic, that’s the biggest problem of a car driver. You always get stuck in traffic, especially when you are in a hurry. From now one you won’t have that problem anymore. Just imagine a vehicle capable of getting by traffic just like a bike but whit out the need to wear a helmet o that heavy lather suit a biker has to wear. That vehicle is Tango T600 a two seat car, not the most beautiful car ever made but who cares about that?
If I tell you that Tango T600 is 39 inches wide, 101 inches long and the two seats are one behind the other, you’re going to say that the Tango T600 is a motorcycle with a roof. And when you are going to find out that it’s powered by an electric engine you’re going to be really disappointed. But think about it! A small car that can get by traffic like a bike, which can be parked almost all over the place, and is environmental friendly, is the perfect thing for a crowded city.
If you think that today’s off-road vehicles can carry you anyway no matter how difficult the terrain is just think what the future will bring: an ultimate off-road car that won’t be stopped by anything.
This vehicle could be the Jeep Hurricane, a Daimler-Chrysler concept unveiled at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Until now there’s nothing special about this car, but think about this: Hurricane is a Jeep with more horsepower, more climbing ability and more steering options than any car ever made.
