At the helm of the Cruisers Yacht 310 Express, you’ll feel like one of the princes of the Earth. The 310 Express offers speed, a reasonable amount of interior room, a good galley and head and fair accommodations for the owner and guests. You have options regarding fabrics, colors, the interior and the trim that let you make the boat your own, inside and out, whether for coastal or lake cruising, or as a live-aboard.

Cruiser Yachts offers boats from 20 to 54 feet in length. The 310 Express, their smallest yacht, has accommodations for four, moves quickly and offers the basic creature comforts you would expect from a small yacht. The cockpit is equipped with basic navigation instruments, including a GPS chartplotter, a VHF radio for bridge-to-bridge communications with other vessels.

The 310 Express has enough power to reach a relatively high speed, but it reaches plane quickly and levels out quickly for a comfortable ride. High-speed turns or a strong chop can change that, though. Viewed by the manufacturer as a weekender rather than a boat for extensive cruising, the 310 Express’s construction meets the standards of the U.S. Coast Guard and the American Boat and Yacht Council for flotation and safety equipment, and carries fuel sufficient for a weekend outing.

From the Captain’s Chair

The steering and throttle controls are designed to maximize efficiency while minimizing fatigue, and when you wind the twin Volvo Pentas up to 5,000 rpm, the 310 Express can zip you along at 44 miles per hour. On the on the starboard side is the captain’s bench – wide enough for two – that offers all-around views, including a forward view through a walk-through windshield. At the helm, your navigation suite includes a GPS-chartplotter and VHF radio. On the cockpit’s port side, there’s a combination settee/divan. Cup holders abound, supporting the cockpit’s wet bar. The 310 Express also has a shower in the cockpit, along with a removable 25 quart cooler.

Creature Comfort

Go below on the 310 Express and you’ll find the salon is fully carpeted. The galley, on the port side is well equipped, with a two-burner ceramic cooktop, microwave, sink and refrigerator. The dining area includes a dinette and three opening portholes. The boat’s sound system, a CD player that’s controlled from the helm, lives in the galley, too, along with a 15-inch LCD TV. Aft of the galley, the head, with 6 feet, 3 inches of headroom, includes a sink, mirror, shower, storage and details to help you get ready to start another day as the 310 Express’s captain or mate. The queen-size bed in the master stateroom lurks all the way forward in the bow, behind a privacy curtain. The berth has clothing and supply storage. Go aft past the galley and you’ll find the aft settee’s U-shape seat that surrounds a removable table. You can convert the area to a double berth for those times when you have company aboard.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

• Available options for the 310 Express include the color of the hull stripe, the fabrics used in the interior, the color of the seat covers in the cockpit, the interior colors and the color of the weather screen, the soft top over the rear of the cockpit.
• The galley is as competent as some on larger vessels, and includes a fair amount of storage room in drawers and cabinets.
• The interior has 6 feet, 3 inches of head room, meaning you don’t have to crouch down to go inside.
• You have a choice of three 5.0 L Volvo gas engines, two 5.0 L Mercruiser engines or one Volvo diesel.
• The interior lacks privacy; the master stateroom has a curtain, rather than a wall, to separate you from the salon. The aft settee, when employed as a double berth, lacks privacy.

The Cruisers Yacht 310 Express is a fast boat for day, overnight or weekend trips. Docking fees won’t eat you alive because it’s only 31 feet long. It might be useful as a live-aboard for adults, because it’s small enough to operate single-handedly and keep clean with ease, but large enough to offer some breathing room. The engine choices offer speed while remaining both civilized and efficient. Overall, it seems to offer a lot of boat for its $281,000 price tag.
