From the stainless deck equipment at its bow to the sundeck and swim platform at its stern, the Predator 57 offers up plenty of action for the discerning yachtsman. Built by London-based Sunseeker, the 2015 Predator 57 was introduced to the world at the January 2015 London Boat Show. Part of Sunseeker’s Predator lineup that ranges in length from 60 to nearly 82 feet, the 2015 Predator 57 promises to deliver what its predecessors have and more.

Longer, wider and more luxurious for 2015, the Sunseeker Predator 57’s razor-edge style is unmistakable. It retains the “open design” concept that blends the cockpit, upper salon with the teak sunbathing platform and the swim platform just above water level, and the electric patio doors that rise from the deck at the touch of a button for cooler weather. Its interior, lit by Sunseeker’s undivided windows that extend along the side of its hull, includes a galley and accommodations for six.

With a top speed of 32 knots delivered by Volvo diesels, the Predator 57 is like a Bentley – not as quick off the line as some, but with more than ample muscle on the top end. You have a choice of drive systems; one is the standard propeller shaft and propeller, the other Volvo’s IPS drive. The Volvo IPS drive pod system not only drops fuel consumption by 30 percent, it lowers interior noise levels by half and makes docking the 60-foot long Predator almost as simple as hitting parallel-parking button in a car. The hand-laid fiberglass hull, vinylester coated and gel-coat finished, includes balsa-core flotation topside and a foam-core deck and superstructure. Trim features, like the stripe that overlays the windows in the hull, are integrated into the gel-coat. The hull is reinforced by a transverse bulkhead-and-floor system, as well as stringers that run from bow to stern, and the bottom of the single-skin hull is single-stitched, multi-axial, high-performance composite. The one weak spot in the “seaworthiness appraisal” is the opening port holes in the forward guest quarters. If an unwary guest leaves them open and you encounter heavy seas, you might encounter significant flooding in the forward compartment.

From the Captain’s Chair to the Engine Room

Behind its curved glass windscreen, the Predator 57’s command console is loaded. The helm seats are well-upholstered and look comfortable, and face a black, polished console with a sport wheel backed by hydraulic steering. A rudder-angle indicator removes the guesswork about the rudder’s position. The engine instruments are analog rather than digital; a quick glance can give you the engines’ conditions. The navigation suite includes a compass, radar with plotting capabilities that allows you to determine the course and speed of vessels around your or approaching you, an electronic speed log that you can tie into your GPS and radar, and a depth sounder to keep you out of trouble in shallow water. The autopilot is standard and, on the console, you’ll find switches for the windscreen washer-wipers and the controls for the boat’s trim tabs.

The engine bay hatch, located on the floor of the salon, opens electrically, leading to a fully soundproofed engine room. Fuel-water separators protect both the generators and the Volvo engines, and all raw-water inlets have strainers and the generators are equipped with automatic emergency shut-down flaps. The engine’s air intakes are automatic as well, and the Predator 57’s automatic bilge pumps keep the bilge dry and clean. The engine exhaust temperature is automatically monitored. The engine room is also equipped with automatic flooding alarms and a DuPont FM200 waterless fire suppression system.

Creature Comforts

The Predator 57 incorporates subtle reminders of the style of the great ocean liners of the 20th century. Move into the aft cockpit and upper salon, where the seats provide under-seat storage, and you’ll find a wet bar, complete with a refrigerator and microwave, a sink with hot and cold running water, AC-power outlets, and an entertainment center with a radio-CD/DVD player with Bluetooth capability. Utility and low-level overhead lighting, a teak dining table and a cupboard with Sunseeker’s own crockery and cutlery complete the feeling of luxury. Aft of the salon, you find a large sunbed; to either side of the sunbed, three steps lead down to a teak swim platform, where you’ll find access to a garage for tender and water toys.

Walk down the steps on the starboard side of the salon and you enter the galley and lower salon. It’s well-equipped, with a four-burner, ceramic cooktop with exhaust fan, a microwave oven, a stainless steel sink and a refrigerator. The galley has ample storage space, a set of crockery and cutlery and two AC receptacles to charge phones, tablets and laptops. With a 22-inch television, yet another radio-CD/DVD player with Bluetooth capability, speakers and overhead lighting, the carpeted lower salon provides a below-decks hangout with a dining table. Its upholstered seating also pulls double duty as storage space with throw pillows. Off the galley and salon, you’ll find the starboard guest quarters with a single, Pullman-style bed, hanging wardrobe and under-bunk storage.

Go forward from the galley and lower salon and you enter the VIP guest quarters, with a double bed that has storage beneath it and two reading lights, and overhead lighting. It has both clothing lockers and a hanging wardrobe. The view outside comes from opening portholes, and in-cabin entertainment includes a 22-inch television. A double AC receptacle allows your guests to charge their electronic devices and a hatchway to the forward main deck provides for their safety. The VIP suite has its own head, with shower and toilet, Avonite countertops, and a switchable voltage, 120- and 240-volt receptacle. An opening porthole and overhead lighting complete the head’s equipment.

Follow the passageway aft from the galley and up the steps and you reach the master stateroom. Fully carpeted, the master suite has its own head with a shower and dressing area. A double bed with storage drawers beneath, bedside tables with storage, a mirrored wardrobe and a settee highlight the cabin, as do overhead and bedside wall lamps. A 32-inch television on the forward wall will keep you entertained, as will windows on both sides of the room that offer a panoramic view of the ocean. The master suite includes a private head with a shower, toilet and dressing area. The countertop in the toilet area is Avonite, and the area has a switchable-voltage electric socket to accommodate both European and American electric razors. The head has a mirrored cupboard, as well as a porthole and overhead lighting.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

• The Predator 57 appears to be as competent as it is well-appointed and London-based Sunseeker is a well-regarded yacht builder. The pre-optional-equipment price for the 2015 Predator 57 is $1,201,000, depending on monetary fluctuations, well within the price range for similar vessels. The design makes the Predator 57 seem as spacious as larger boats and the ability to customize the interior layout adds value well beyond the base price.
• The Predator 57 makes some sacrifices because of size: the guest quarters has a single berth and no private head.
• The crew quarters has a single berth with under-bed storage, located above the engine room.

The Sunseeker Predator 57 lets you entertain yourself and your guests in style. More than an entry-level yacht, the Predator 57 may whet your appetite for something more. Be that as it is, it’s pretty much an ideal yacht for the sailor who wants a vessel that’s as luxurious as it is capable.
