In 2022, the wave of EVs heading our way is only getting bigger with more and more legacy brands and start-ups lining up their best offerings across all segments but SUVs and crossovers continue to be the highest-selling segment. So, in this article, we shall look at 10 electric SUVs and crossovers currently on sale that tick all the right boxes and make a strong case for electric SUVs of all shapes, sizes, and price brackets to help you find your next electric SUV.

Ioniq 5

Last year, Hyundai unveiled its first big step towards an EV future when it released the Ioniq 5 EV. Launched alongside the Kia EV6, both these cars are based on the E-GMP platform that also underpins the new Genesis GV60. The Ioniq 5 is the cheapest car based on this new platform, its Neo-retro styling and massive interiors make it a very practical and well-thought-out daily driver that's powered by either a single motor RWD setup or a dual motor AWD setup.

The base variant with a 58 kWh battery produces 168 horsepower and the RWD version with a bigger battery pack comes with an EPA range of 303 miles, 0-60 in under seven seconds, 225 horses, and 258 pound-feet of torque. The AWD dual-motor variant packs 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque for an impressive 0-60 mph time of just 5.1 sec and a range of 256 miles range. Hyundai has given the Ioniq 5 an 800Volt architecture which allows for some of the best charging times in the industry. With a 150W DC fast charger, it can top up from 10- to 80-percent in just 25 minutes, and with a 350 kW charger in just 18 minutes. The 2022 Ioniq 5 range is priced between $41,245 and $55,745 and comes across as the best value proposition of the lot.

Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 is the second installment in Hyundai Motor Group's grand EV plan. Based on the E-GMP platform that it shares with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Genesis GV60, the EV6 is perhaps the sleekest and boldest of the bunch with its striking design and massive dimensions which complete this Kia EVs futuristic look. This is also the quest car in the E-GMP range with the range-topping EV6 GT capable of making 567 horsepower using its dual motor AWD setup which results in a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. But, if you want something more economical and budget friendly then the base single motor EV6 with 167 horsepower and the smaller 58 kWh battery starts at just $42,695 and delivers a respectable 232 miles of range while the bigger 77.4 kWh battery can deliver an EPA-rated 310-miles.

The interior is also very futuristic with curved screens, floating center consoles, and acres of space. Though it misses out on things like the sliding center console as seen in the Ioniq 5, it more than makes up for it with its dark-themed interior with great ambient lighting and a sleeker dual-display setup. The boot is massive too with 24 cubic feet of space behind the second row of seats which makes this a truly practical and usable electric SUV.

Mustang Mach-E

Launched back in 2019, the Mustang Mach-E was Ford's controversial attempt to put the Mustang badge on a crossover SUV and despite the initial backlash, Ford got a lot of things right with the Mach-E. For starters, it has consistent panel gaps, better paint quality with no obvious orange peel effect, and the hinges and body panels just feel more reassuring. The interiors of the Mach-E are much more conventional and have loads of different textures and finishes and the Mach-E's dual display approach which make use of a separate readout placed Infront of the driver for displaying speed, range, etc.

The Mach-E also feels roomier than its competitors and offers more leg and shoulder room, making it more suited to longer journeys. And, it comes with clever touches like the partitioned front trunk which keeps your groceries from flying around, a drain plug, giving you space to stow away your cold beer, and how American is that! But, it's not all good news, the entry-level versions are very sedate by modern EV standards but the Mach-E GT fixes that with its 480 horsepower AWD setup. But what's not acceptable is the ride which is bouncy and stiff and not very SUV-like. The 2022 Mach-E carries a base price of $43,895 which is considerably cheaper than its chief rival, the Tesla Model Y which starts at $58,990.

Volvo XC40 Recharge

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is based on Volvo's ICE-powered XC40 compact SUV. The XC40 Recharge continues to offer a dual motor setup for proper AWD performance across the model lineup. The dual-motor setup also means that the XC40 Recharge is quick with its 0-60 mph time of just 4.3-seconds thanks to the 402-horsepower combined output of the dual motor setup.

The only place where this SUV falls short is in the range department with its EPA ratings of 92 MPGe city and 79 MPGe highway. This is expected from an SUV that wasn't designed as an EV from the ground up which generally translates to smaller battery capacities, but Volvo has managed to stuff the Recharge with a 75 kWh battery pack which is more than acceptable for this segment. The cabin is small but well appointed and features signature Volvo touches like vegan upholstery, a well-appointed feature set, and quality materials, but there's no getting away from its compact dimensions which make this best suited for small families or solo city commutes. With a starting price of $55,340, the Volvo XC40 Recharge is relatively expensive.

Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y is the brand's latest family crossover that shares its underpinnings with the Model 3 sedan and ticks all the right boxes. Taking the fight to the Mustang Mach-E and VW ID.4, the Model-Y takes the same basic formula of the Model 3 including its minimalist interior and exterior styling, and wraps it in a more practical SUV form factor and the added ground clearance means it can even take on dirt tracks and other minor obstacles and the new boot more than doubles the trunk room with 36 cubic feet of storage on offer as opposed to the Model 3's 15 cubic feet.

Offered in two trim levels with AWD as standard, the Model Y range carries a starting price of $67,440 for the entry-level long-range trim with 330 miles of range and does 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, while the top-of-the-line "performance" trim costs $69,440 and offers 303 miles and does the 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.6 seconds. The standard range model has been canceled for 2022. Thanks to Tesla's supercharger network and the recognition of the brand, the Tesla Model Y is indeed a compelling EV SUV to buy in 2022.

Genesis GV60

The Genesis GV60 is the first EV offering from the Korean luxury brand Genesis and the most premium car based on Hyundai Motor Group's E-GMP platform, shared with cars like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. The Genesis then is the most luxurious of the three cars and features high-quality materials and "premium" features like the rotating crystal ball for the shifter and the use of high-quality screens and minimalist button layout all of which add a sense of luxury. The exterior follows the minimal and elegant theme with the signature Genesis split heal lights and tail lights and despite the coupe-like design, there's plenty of headroom for rear seat passengers.

The Genesis however isn't the quickest car on this platform, that award goes to the Kia EV6 which does 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds as opposed to the GV60's 3.7 seconds but the Genesis has a higher top speed of 151 mph. As for motors, it receives two of them and AWD is standard with two trims that govern the amount of horsepower. The entry-level advanced makes 314 horsepower while upgrading to the Performance bumps the power up to 483 horsepower and with a sub $60,000 starting price, the Genesis GV60 is one of the best electric luxury crossovers on sale today.

Audi E-Tron

The Audi E-Tron is one of Audi's oldest and most popular offerings in the Electric SUV category and the E-Tron is available as a regular SUV and as a coupe called the E-Tron Sportback. The entry-level E-Tron GT starts at $67,995 while the range-topping "Prestige" trim comes in at $87,495 and brings in all the tech and optional extras that one could ask for. The E-Tron range is exclusively offered with a dual-motor AWD setup that makes 355 horsepower or 402 horsepower momentarily with launch control. The E-Tron also does well in practicality by offering tons of practicality with its SUV form factor and a usable EPA -range of 222 miles.

Granted the range is underwhelming for the price and it’s a shame that Audi isn't bumping up its battery capacity or range despite being one of the oldest EVs in the brand's lineup. But where the E-Tron truly impresses is in the aesthetics and quality department, with clean and typically Audi lines and a well put together interior that packs plenty of connectivity and features including gimmicks like cameras for side mirrors and looks stunning, the Audi E-Tron is an SUV that you and your entire family can love and enjoy.

Rivian R1S

Rivian R1s Side Profile
Rivian Media

The Rivian R1S is the first SUV brought to us by the groundbreaking new California-based EV startup, Rivian. The R1S is essentially the SUV version of the R1T pickup truck and just like its pickup truck twin, it brings some out-of-the-box ideas in a very familiar SUV body style. Powered by a quad motor AWD setup with one motor per wheel, the R1T makes 835 horsepower and gets to 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.2 seconds but what's even more impressive is its massive 132 kWh battery pack that offers a very impressive 316 miles of range.

The Rivian R1T is utilitarian yet premium with a plush interior that features good quality interior touch points, a slick dual-screen setup with clever software, and lots of storage space including underfloor storage with a drain plug that allows it to be used as an ice box or wet storage. These clever touches make it a very desirable SUV but the only chink in the R1T's armor is its near $100,000 base price which makes it a very premium EV SUV offering.

BMW is all set to take the plunge into the world of EVs with its upcoming range of EVs and that starts with the BMW iX SUV, which is a mid-size SUV that aims to be the electric counterpart of the BMW X5 and packs all the right ingredients. It is offered in two trims - the xDrive50 which comes with a dual-motor AWD setup that makes 516 horsepower all while squeezing out a usable 300 miles of range, and a 610-horsepower M60 performance version.

The BMW iX is no joke; it’s a proper luxury mid-size SUV with a premium badge and an equally premium starting price of $85,095. For that price, you get a luxurious interior that showcases next-generation BMW tech which includes a 14.9-inch curved touchscreen display for the updated i-drive interface, electrochromic panoramic sunroof, and 18-speaker Harman Kardon sound system or an optional 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins hi-fi amongst others. The iX drives flat and with composure when pushed hard and despite the 5,707-pound curb weight, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds. The air suspension ensures a supple and quiet ride which suits this BMW SUV's luxurious image, which makes the 2022 BMW iX, one of the best premium luxury SUVs.

Tesla Model X

White Tesla Model X
Tesla

The Model X is the biggest, baddest SUV made by Silicon Valley's beloved Tesla motors and shares plenty of hardware with the Model S sedan. For 2022, the Tesla Model X carries an MSRP of $106,440 for the entry-level Long Range model while the range-topping Plaid comes with an MSRP of $121,440. But the updates it received for the 2021 model year continue to keep things interesting. The Tesla Model X continues to make headlines not only for its controversial falcon doors but more so for its performance. The range-topping Plaid with its triple motor drive and 1020 horsepower is the quickest production SUV on sale today with a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.5 seconds which puts super SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus to shame.

The Tesla Model X is a well-behaved and extremely practical SUV to drive. When you aren't in the aptly named ludicrous mode, the Tesla ponders around town with absolute composure courtesy of a brilliant adaptive suspension setup which is standard across the Model X range. The highly controversial Yoke steering wheel might be a controversial update but the updated dashboard with the new landscape-oriented infotainment screen and a new 22-speaker and the dedicated rear seat display for second-row passengers are all welcome additions to the Model X which make it one of the best electric SUVs in the business.
