Giorgetto Giugiaro, along with his son, Fabrizio Giugiaro, is debuting an all-new, fully electric luxury sedan at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show on March 6. The yet-named concept car will hail from GFG Style – a family company named after the father and son duo – and will showcase the marriage of beauty and technology.

The four-seater was jointly developed with Envision; a Chinese energy management company focused on cutting-edge technology. Together, the pair designed the car to operate autonomously using the Internet of Things, while also offering a fun driving experience when the driver wants to take the wheel.

In a statement about the car, Giorgetto Giugiaro said, “As my 80th birthday gets closer, I’m preparing a car to commemorate it. The prototype is a full four-seater electric salon, combining luxury, sportiness, space, and dynamism, along with a steering wheel, as I could not bring myself to eliminate it.”

Giugiaro EV Saloon Exterior

The GFG EV Saloon has a striking silhouette that’s clearly visible in the teaser photos. The low-slung hood, the long, curving roof, and what appears to be an integrated spoiler on the rear decklid all lend themselves in making an attractive concept. The car looks like speed. Even the lower aprons on the front and rear bumpers add to the slick appearance. Beyond the silhouette and a few detail shots, it’s hard to get an overall idea of the GFG EV Saloon’s design.

In Giugiaro’s words, “I have designed it for a sophisticated, international, demanding user, who today is still driving but who is soon destined to be driven around by the car itself. I think that beauty is always a matter of proportions and we are not yet ready to accept styling cues that are too revolutionary.”

Giugiaro EV Saloon Interior

Note: Giugiaro Parcour interior shown here.

As mysterious as the exterior is, we know nothing of the interior besides it does indeed have a steering wheel, will have self-driving features, and seats four people. The dash will surely be a tech-filled place with large screens, minimalistic menu displays, and a futuristic nature. Expect the seats to also be futuristic with elements of fashion and avant-garde styling.

Giugiaro EV Saloon Drivetrain

GFG has been very quiet on the details of the EV Saloon’s powertrain, likely because this is mostly a design study. Of course, the car is fully electric with a large enough battery pack for commuting, if not for intermediate trips, even. GFG’s partner in the build, Envision, will undoubtedly be handling the technical aspects of the car, including its Internet of Things connectivity, recharging capabilities, its battery pack, and its electric motor(s). Envision has said its software will be open-source, meaning other automakers or start-up firms can build off GFG and Envision’s knowledge base.

Conclusion

We know very little about the GFG EV saloon at this point, but hopefully, that will change come March 6 at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. GFG will be on hand to answer questions, and official press materials will surely be made available. When that happens, we’ll bring you all the updated information.
