An off-road-oriented truck that is way wider and taller than the Raptor

LISTEN 10:06

Ford F-150 is the hot favorite pickup truck for tuners and here’s another proof. Michigan-based Mil-Spec Automotive has laid its hands on this truck and transformed into a complete beast. Although a lot of tuners and aftermarket companies are customizing the F-150 in their own ways, this example actually stands out. Mil-Spec has made cosmetic upgrades on the outside, some plush changes on the inside, and a whole lot of changes to the mechanicals and drivetrain of the truck. From our initial impressions, this is one of the better modded-F-150s we’ve seen in recent times.

What Does the Mil-Spec F-150 Look Like On The Outside?

  • High-Intensity LED Headlights
  • Heavy-Duty Front And Rear Steel Bumpers
  • Offered In Exterior Four Shades
  • 20-inch Mil-Spec-inspired Wheels
  • 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler Tires
  • Baja Exterior Appearance Package Looks Great
  • Mil-Spec Branding All Around The Body

Upfront, the tuner has made changes to everything other than the headlight clusters. The standard lights are replaced with high-intensity LEDs. The F-150 receives a new black Mil-Spec honeycomb design grille with three amber marker lights on the top border. The Blue Oval logo is replaced with the tuner’s logo. The stock bumper is replaced with a heavy-duty steel unit with a black powder coat finish from APD. LED light bar is available as an optional accessory as well. Also, Mil-Spec is offering the Ford F-150 in four different shades - Agate Black, Magnetic Grey, Lead Foot Grey, and Oxford White.

The side profile of this ‘super-truck’ – as Mil-Spec calls it – looks as imposing and intimidating as the face.

The truck is raised high off the ground to accommodate the large tires. It comes with an increased track width as well. To puts things into perspective, this Mil-Spec F-150 is seven inches wider than the Raptor and is as tall as the F-250 Super Duty. This truck rides on 20-inch Mil-Spec-inspired wheels wrapped around 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. Yes, 37-inches! The only chrome bit on the exterior is present on the door handles. The truck bed is machine-finished with the Mil-Spec branding and logo. Even though there is a lot of branding all around, it is quite tasteful.

The rear profile of this super-truck looks stunning. The tuner hasn’t messed around with the tailgate. You can still find the Ford logo and the F-150 embossing on it. You can opt for the Baja Exterior Appearance Package that includes a low-profile Baja Roof Rack, a spare tire carrier for an oversized off-road wheel, and a large 39-inch LED light bar system on the roof. These functional things even change the truck’s appearance. Right above the rear cabin window, Mil-Spec has also equipped three LED high mounted stoplights. The rear bumper is replaced with steel one like the front bumper. The dual exhaust tips with black finish further add to the unique looks of this truck. Overall, the truck looks brute and monstrous.

Are There Any Changes On The Inside?

  • Leather Seats
  • Billet Aluminum Finished Knobs
  • High-Performance Electric Steering Wheel
  • Custom Paddle Shifters

There aren’t a whole lot of changes on the inside.

The standard upholstery is replaced with leather seats that look and feel premium.

While the steering wheel, dashboard, and most of the other things are retained as it is, Mil-Spec has added a few things of its own. For starters, you can find the company’s branding all around. The tuner has changed the control knobs on the center console with Billet aluminum finished knobs. Mil-Spec has also implemented a high-performance electric steering wheel that comes with custom paddle shifters and centerline stitching. That’s a good add-on to have. On the space front, there are no compromises and the truck remains to be as spacious as it is in the stock form.

What Are Changes Made To The Mechanicals And Drivetrain?

  • 5.0-liter, V-8 Coyote Engine
  • Now Makes 500 Horsepower
  • 10-speed Automatic Transmission
  • Modified Long-Travel Baja Suspension Allows 11-inch Wheel Travel
  • Track Width Increased By 13.5-inches
  • Fox 3.0 F-150 Long Travel Performance Shock Package

Firstly, this F-150 is powered by Ford’s 5.0-liter, V-8 Coyote engine. In the standard form, it makes 395 horses and 400 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Mil-Spec, however, has bumped up the power figure. This naturally-aspirated truck now makes 500 ponies. There’s no word on whether the torque figures see any increase, so, it should still be 400 pound-feet. Mil-Spec has given the engine a performance tune that’s specifically designed for 91 octane fuel. If you want to extract maximum performance from this truck, you know what its choice of drink is.

Mil-Spec has equipped a modified long-travel Baja suspension underneath this F-150’s body. This allows the truck to have an 11-inch wheel travel and makes it a go-anywhere vehicle. Even the truck’s track width is increased by 13.5-inches over the stock F-150. No wonder Mil-Spec calls it a super-truck. You can also opt for the Baja Performance Suspension Package. It comes with a variety of Fox Racing components that further enhance the truck’s off-roading capabilities.

To make things even more interesting, the tuner also offers a new Fox 3.0 F-150 Long Travel Performance Shock Package. This, too, is an optional package and you will have to shell out extra moolah. It includes:

  • Fully-adjustable Coilover and shock kit with three-inch diameter bypass shocks
  • Remote reservoirs
  • 10AN hoses and Eibach springs for both the front and rear suspension

All the components are powder coated black with anodized aluminum accents. So, all the stuff that’s peeping from under the truck won’t look like a sore thumb.

How Much Does The Mil-Spec F-150 Cost?

- image 894506

The super-truck from Mil-Spec is priced at $85,000 and it includes the cost of a 2020 F-150 donor vehicle. While it seems reasonable at the onset, most of the exciting stuff is optional. Mil-Spec is selling the Baja Suspension Package for $6,000 and the Baja Exterior Appearance Package is available at $8,600. With a few more add-ons and other charges, this F-150 breaches the six-digit figure.

Who Does It Go Up Against?

Hennessey products are expensive, no doubt. But, if you are shelling out $100,000, why not consider the new Venom 775? It isn’t as off-road-oriented as the Mil-Spec super-truck, but it comes with its own set of stuff that makes the F-150 a beast in its own right. Hennessey sells the Venom 775 package for $69,990 that includes all the optional kits and accessories. Add the cost of a mid-trim F-150 like the Lariat, and the total cost adds up to around $115,000. For this amount, you receive:

  • Hennessey Front and Rear Bumpers, and Ram Air Hood,
  • LED Lighting and Blacked-out Grille
  • 20-inch, Fuel Wheels wrapped around 35-inch Toyo Off-Road Tires

Final Thoughts

2020 Ford F-150 by Mil-Spec Exterior
- image 894521

If off-roading and camping is your priority, the Mil-Spec F-150 is a great truck to have. The F-150 is a versatile truck and almost every reputed automaker out there has designed its version. So, there’s no harm in looking around before finalizing on this. The Baja suspension and exterior packages look tempting and make the truck a different creature altogether. However, the interior is disappointing. But, that said, the super-truck looks great and will make you grin every time you see parked in your garage.

  • Leave it
    • Interior is boring
    • Accomplished products from brands like Hennessey are not priced far away

Michigan Automaker Delivers Mean New Look and Power to Popular F-150 Platform for Enthusiasts Looking to Dominate the Road and Beyond

Auburn Hills, MI (March 30, 2020) – Known for designing custom handmade H1 trucks for enthusiasts looking to overcome even the toughest obstacles, Mil-Spec Automotive is proud to introduce their brand-new F-150 series of high-performance trucks. Founded by a trio of young twenty something auto designers from Michigan, the new F-150 from Mil-Spec Automotive feature a brawny 500-horsepower 5.0L V8 performance package specially engineered to tackle anything.

“At Mil-Spec Automotive, our company designs always center around a deep passion for upgrading some of the world’s most celebrated trucks,” comments Mil-Spec Automotive Co-Founder Adam Mitchell. “Our new Mil-Spec Automotive F-150 is very much an extension of our popular bespoke H1 series. As truck enthusiasts, we are always on the hunt for platforms that we can dramatically improve from a performance perspective while also offering Mil-Spec Automotive’s unique aesthetic. The new Mil-Spec Automotive F-150 is very much a go anywhere, do anything supertruck.”

Ready to take drivers anywhere out on the open road or dirt, and look good doing it, the Mil-Spec Automotive F-150 is a high-performance truck up for even the toughest of terrain. The company utilizes an impressive 500-horsepower naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 package to power each F-150. Each engine is also powerfully customized with an elite performance tune specifically designed for 91 octane. In an effort to further improve the driving experience, Mil-Spec implemented a high-performance electric power-assisted steering wheel with custom magnesium paddle shifters and centerline stitching.

The optional Baja Performance Suspension Package incorporates a variety of Fox Racing components to improve the MSA F-150’s off-road performance and allow drivers to dominate behind the wheel. Designed as a tactically-inspired alternative to the wildly popular Raptor, the powerful new Mil-Spec Automotive F-150 supertruck features a modified long-travel Baja Suspension, which comfortably allows up to 11-inches of wheel travel and up to 13.5-inches of increased track width over a standard stock F-150. This innovative MSA design produces a truck that is seven inches wider than the Raptor, as tall as an F-250 heavy-duty truck with an off-road tuned suspension as aggressive as the Raptor. Combined with the might of the tried and true 5.0L v8 tuned and upgraded to 500 naturally aspirated HP, this vehicle truly stands out in the crowd.

The new Fox 3.0 F-150 Long Travel Performance Shock Package is another Mil-Spec Automotive addition, which includes an optional fully adjustable coilover and shock kit with 3’’ diameter bypass shocks, remote reservoirs, 10AN hoses and Eibach springs for both the front and rear suspension. All hardware included in this package is powder coated black with anodized aluminum accents to complete the sleek exterior. Mil-Spec Automotive offers the Baja Suspension Package for $6,000.

Powder coated heavy duty side steps allow for easy access into the new Mil-Spec Automotive F-150 cab, while high-intensity LED headlights help to greatly improve visibility on the road. More delightfully brutish upgrades abound, including 20-inch Mil-Spec Automotive-inspired alloy wheels that wear 37x13.59R20LT Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. The dual exhaust tips with black finish add another tactical design element to this powerful truck.

Additional upgrades for the new Mil-Spec F-150 include the Baja Exterior Appearance Package, which further transforms the heavy duty special edition. The new exterior options include a low-profile Baja Roof Rack, a spare tire carrier made for equipping an oversized off-road wheel, and a large 39’’ LED light bar system for perfect visibility on dark trails. Altogether, the Baja Exterior Appearance Package is available at $8,600.

Priced at $85,000 including the donated 2020 F-150, Mil-Spec Automotive made sure to incorporate their trademark tactical-inspired aesthetic throughout each F-150 truck build. Additionally, because these trucks are not Ford performance-based, they are fully eligible for applicable factory rebates unlike the Raptor and will be fully financeable.

The rugged front and rear bumper systems in the new supertruck are engineered from fully-welded heavy-duty steel that offers extra strength with a sleek satin black powder coat finish and LED lighting compatibility. While trucks of this caliber often are available at a price point in excess of $150,000, the Mil-Spec Automotive team knew there was a more financially responsible way to produce these machines.

“MSA saw an opportunity to bring a product offering to the market at a price point that hasn’t been seen before,” comments Mitchell. “Our goal was to include an extreme exterior aesthetic backed up by drastic performance improvements that could be applied to one of the most iconic North American vehicle platforms, the F-150. Many of the American aftermarket legacy brands have attempted to improve this platform in a turn-key package, but our in-depth market research revealed that more could be done while still achieving a price point that is well below what most of these companies are targeting.”

Each new Mil-Spec Automotive F-150 is available in four exterior colors: Agate Black, Magnetic Grey, Lead Foot Grey, and Oxford White. Mil-Spec Automotive badging is impressively featured throughout the exterior and interior of the vehicle, with each logo available in either a machine, semi-gloss black, or powder coat black finish.

The Mil-Spec Automotive F-150 also features sleek interior styling that includes leather seats for customers amongst other appointments throughout. Billet aluminum control knobs and a billet number plaque are included on the center console for each truck. Mil-Spec Automotive touches and numbering are tastefully located throughout the interior, adding another layer of exclusivity to these expertly crafted redesigned American icons.
