BMW’s gamble to come up with the 4 Series Gran Coupe paid. The company introduced it in 2014 to fill the vacuum between the 3 Series and the 5 Series. Given the vast lineup of both these models, no one really felt a need for a vehicle in between. But, as they say, it was something we didn’t know we need.

Fast forward to the present day, BMW has launched the second-gen of the 4 Series Gran Coupe. Apart from the little tweaks and enhancements in all departments, the biggest add-on to the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe is the extra pair of doors that makes it all the more practical. Like it any better now?

How Different Is The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe On The Outside?

The 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe has a unique exterior as it is, courtesy of that flowing roofline. It shares a lot of design elements with the i4. Up front, it comes with the ‘unavoidable’ kidney grille. The GC comes with adaptive LED headlights as standard, whereas BMW Laserlights are optional. When a four-door car is converted to a two-door, or vice versa, it feels a little odd and erratic initially. But, that’s definitely not the case here. The roofline slopes a little more gently at the rear now, but it’s still far from the conventional silhouette of the 3 Series.

BMW has worked on its aerodynamics, too. There are a lot of components that channel the airflow efficiently, such as an active air flap control system, air curtains, and streamlined light-alloy wheels. Even the underbody is almost completely sealed. These changes result in a slightly better coefficient of drag, which is 0.28 now, a drop of 0.01.

The 2022 4 Series Gran Couple is offered in two trims now – 430i and M440i xDrive. Both the models come with 18-inch wheels as standard and 19-inch as optional. They are wrapped in 225/45 section tires. The top M440i xDrive comes with six different designs to choose from. The M440i xDrive features some more changes, such as:

-* The signature U-shaped design of BMW M models on the front bumper.

-* Cerium Grey-finished kidney grille frame and vertical trims around the air curtains

-* Cerium Grey-finished exterior mirror caps, exhaust pipe trim, and badges

-* Air breathers, side sills, lower rear bumper finished in high-gloss black

-* An M-specific spoiler

What’s Powers The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe?

As mentioned earlier, the 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is offered in 430i and M440i xDrive trims. They both feature different engines and drive systems.

The 430i comes with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that puts out 255 horses and 295 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It takes 5.8 seconds to gallop to 60 mph from rest.

It even incorporates a 48-volt hybrid system. Power is routed to the ground via all four wheels, courtesy of the all-wheel-drive system. The engine is mated to the same eight-speed automatic gearbox. An M Sport exhaust system comes as standard here. The M440i xDrive is much quicker, taking just 4.4 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from a standstill.

The top speed is limited to 130 mph, but can be raised to 155 mph if you opt for the performance tires. Both the engine options come with Launch Control, too.

The 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe also features new lift-related shock absorbers. This provides extra damping to control body movement and prevents excessive body dive. The M Sport suspension setup is offered as standard on the M440i xDrive, and it features stiffer settings for the lift-related damping and springs. This can be had on the 430i, too, for extra moolah.
