This is the 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Now in its second generation, the 4 Series Gran Coupe sits in a strange place within the BMW universe, but that's exactly what sets it apart. Slotting in between the 3 and the bigger 5 Series has its benefits. The 4 Series has everything that the 3 Series already does right and then some.

With added practicality thanks to the hatchback style tailgate, more interior room, swoopy fastback looks, and only a small price premium over the 3, you can't ignore this Gran Coupe's appeal. It's no wonder that these things have been flying off the shelves in Europe. This latest generation sees a number of changes inside and outside, so let's take a closer look at what's new for 2022.

2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Performance And Capability

The 4 Series comes in three body styles. Coupe, convertible, and now a 4-door Coupe. The BMW 4 Gran Coupe can actually trace its beginnings to the old 3 Series GT that the Bavarian auto giant once offered. When BMW decided to spin off the two-door 3 Series as the 4 Series, a Gran Coupe version was inevitable, and here we are.

There are three trims available with the 4 Series Gran Coupe

  • BMW 430i
  • BMW 430i xDrive
  • BMW 440i xDrive

The base model 430i Gran Coupe packs a (B 46) 2.0-liter Twin-Power turbo (not twin-turbo) inline-four that produces 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque with power going to the rear wheels. For 2023, BMW has finally added xDrive AWD to the 430i, which will cost you two more grand. twin-turbo) inline-four that produces 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque with power going to the rear wheels. For 2023, BMW has finally added xDrive AWD to the 430i, which will cost you two more grand. Expect an EPA-estimated combined gas mileage of 28 mpg on the 430i.

The top-of-the-line 440i xDrive Gran Coupe features the more powerful (B 58) turbocharged. 3.0-liter, inline-six that produces 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque and sends power to all four corners by default. Although, it should be noted that this is a rear-wheel-biased system. This engine also has a mild-hybrid system that packs 11 horsepower more.

Regardless of the trim you choose, an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across the range. Expect performance to be pretty brisk with a sub-6 second 0-60 mph dash for both engines. The 440i xDrive gets to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. Out of the box, expect the BMW to handle almost as well as the 3 Series and this is despite the 4,169-pound curb weight, which makes it about 200 pounds heavier than a 3 Series.

But, if you want more, you can add the customizable Dynamic Handling Package ($2,450) that will further add upgraded brakes with red or blue calipers, an M Sport Differential, and performance run-flat tires on 19-inch rims.

Exterior Design

Red 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
BMW

Designed from the ground up for 2022, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has grown dimensionally over the outgoing model. It is both longer and wider than before. But that style does pack some substance in that you have functional aero elements, like the air curtain in the front bumper and more vents hiding behind the kidneys. Aside from the grille, the bulges on the hood and the sleek LED lights make the design appear more purposeful.

Moving to the side, this is perhaps where you'll see the big difference over the traditional three-box design of a more traditional sedan. It is slightly taller than the 3 Series, but the coupe-like roofline means that it carries the tear-drop profile and is sexier than your typical sedan. The obligatory BMW Hoffmeister kink is also present on the rear windows.

At the bottom, you'll still find the hockey stick which seems to be going away on newer BMWs like the 7 and 8 Series. Another design highlight, as opposed to the 3 Series, are the frame-less doors. The drag coefficient also sees an improvement at 0.28, which is 0.11 better than the outgoing model.

Finally, the rear has a pair of tastefully done 3D LED taillights. If you decide to add the Shadowline Package ($400), you get black exterior trim along with a rear spoiler. Standard on the M440i, this package completely transforms the vehicle, lending it a sportier appeal. On the 440i xDrive, you also get a lip spoiler on the trunk with an aggressive-looking rear diffuser and metallic surrounds for real exhausts that lurk behind it.

As for colors, the base Alpine White and Jet Black come as standard. You have 7 metallic shades ($500) and three BMW Individual shades ($1500). As for wheels, they start at 18" and go all the way up to an optional set of 20-inch Multi-Spoke Midnight Grey wheels ($1550).

Interior Quality And Technology

2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe dashboard
BMW

If you've seen the interior of the 3 or 4 series, you've seen the interior of the 4 Series Gran Coupe. In typical BMW style, the dash is ever so slightly tilted towards the driver, along with a meaty steering wheel. As with any BMW, fantastic build quality is a given. You'll find soft-touch materials on pretty much all the touchpoints and this even extends to the doors.

Depending on your color palette you can choose between four shades of SensaTec Faux perforated leather with contrast stitching that comes as standard. Or, if you fancy the real thing, you have the option of six shades of Vernasca Leather ($1450), which go well against contrasting wood or metallic trim pieces.

The customizable Premium 2 Package ($1150) offers fantastic value and adds stuff like a heated steering wheel, heated seats, heated steering wheel, lumbar support, ambient lighting, and gestures control for the iDrive system. With the standard Live Cockpit Professional pack, you get a 10.25-inch central screen.

Now, this isn't the biggest screen in the world, but BMW's latest-gen iDrive 7 allows for several ways to interact with the system, including touch, voice, gesture, and the rotary controller - something you could argue makes it one of the best in the industry. The 12.3" digital driver's display, however, isn't as configurable as its rivals.

But the optional head-up display has the ability to show far more information from your connected smartphone, which by the way can charge with a wireless phone charger. Other standard kit includes a decent-sized sunroof, keyless entry, and dual-zone climate control.

The Fastback styling has both benefits and drawbacks. The benefit is that you get two extra doors, but the sloping roofline also means the rear-seat headroom is rather tight. The wheelbase has increased by just over 5 inches and the rear-seat legroom is definitely better than in a 3 Series. The fastback profile hides a practical hatchback allowing you to access the roomy 12 cubic feet of cargo room.

Safety

The latest BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe hasn't been crash-tested by the NHTSA yet. But for your reference, the 4 Series Coupe has achieved the maximum 5 stars in the comparable Euro Ncap crash test, while the latest 3 Series sedan has scored the maximum 5 stars in the NHTSA crash tests at home.

Now out of the box, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is already pretty safe and comes standard with stuff like

  • ADAS
  • Active Driving Assistant
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Adaptive Headlights with automatic high beam assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Front Collision Warning with pedestrian/cyclist detection

Apart from this, you have two additional safety packages to choose from, which will offer semi-autonomous features, lane centering, automatic parking assist, and 360-surround view cameras.

Main Competition

Audi RS5 Sportback
Audi

The BMW Gran Coupe's main rival is the Audi A5 / RS5 Sportback, its very own sibling in the 3 Series, and the funky BMW X4 if you're also considering an SUV. You can also count on the Kia Stinger. Apart from these, you've also got the 4 Series' electric variant in the form of the BMW i4. Here's a comparison of how the 4 Series Gran Coupe stacks up against its rivals in terms of power.

As for price, the Audi and BMW start in the mid-40s, but the base KIA Stinger GT Line is the cheapest car here coming in at an MSRP of $36,290. Also, the Audi appears to be the least powerful in this company, but a more powerful version with 261 horsepower is on the way.

So, in conclusion, if you're in the market for a compact luxury sedan with an extra dose of practicality, the 4 Series Gran Coupe fits that bill rather well. The Gran Coupe also makes a strange case for itself in that it'll stand out in a parking lot as opposed to a more traditional sedan, thanks to the fastback coupe-like styling.
