2016 Acura MDX NSX GT3 Custom Trailer

Luxury brand designs next-generation racing trailer concept

the SEMA Show is the ultimate car show when it comes to modified vehicles and aftermarket parts and accessories, but it is also an opportunity to have some fun with various concepts. Acura is the latest firm to join this year’s event, but unlike other automakers that modified existing cars, it created a custom trailer for the NSX GT3 race car. The trailer is being towed by a matching, beefed-up MDX SUV, giving the NSX the perfect transportation vehicle for racing events across the United States.

A joint collaboration between Acura Design, led by Dave Marek, Acura’s Executive Creative Director, and the Jimmy Shine Workshop, the trailer incorporates styling elements from both the NSX GT3 it’s supposed to carry and the MDX that provides the necessary motivation. The trailer is fully functional and was designed using the latest building techniques. But, even though it is promoted as a next-generation trailer, there’s no official word as to whether it will go into production. Most likely it won’t as Acura isn’t planning to offer such transportation assemblies anytime soon, but outsourcing the project to another firm in order to provide optional trailers to NSX GT3 customers could be on the table in the future.

But, until that happens, let’s have a closer look at this unique MDX and trailer combo and possibly the most advanced transportation platform we’ll see at SEMA this year.

2017 Acura TLX GT Package

Now you can add some aesthetic appeal to your TLX without going broke or opting for an aftermarket kit

The Acura TLX rolled onto the scene for the first time as the TLX Prototype at the 2014 New York Auto Show and went into production for the 2015 model year as a sporty proposition to and replace for the Acura TL and TSX sedans. As one of the youngest in Acura’s lineup, the TLX is still gaining momentum in the public eye but has a lot to offer. It can be had with 2.4-liter four-banger and front-wheel drive or with a 3.5-liter V-6 in either front- or all-wheel drive. Acura’s all-wheel steering system is available on FWD models while the V-6, AWD model has to go without. With pricing ranging between $31,900 and $44,800, there truly is a TLX for just about anyone, and you can expect the TLX to stick around in Acura’s stable for the foreseeable future. As such, Acura has decided to offer up a new package known as the GT package that is said to reflect on the TLX GT car that just finished its Pirelli World Challenge campaign.

Some might consider the TLX a sports sedan, while others look at it as more of a premium luxury sedan, but that’s the beauty of it because both views are correct. This new package, which is set to be showcased at SEMA for 2016, comes after the Technology Package and Advance Package that are already available for the TLX lineup. The Technology package is the first available package and includes things like Acura Navigation and a premium sound system. When the Technology Package is equipped, the Advance Package can be opted for and includes heated and ventilated seats, and lots of driver assistance features, among other things. Where these two packages stop, the GT package comes into play with some visual and aesthetic enhancements that give a properly equipped TLX a new, stylish edge.

Unlike the Advance Package, the GT Package doesn’t require the technology package. And, since it’s not a massive package with tons of features, it won’t increase your total cost that much. With that said, let’s scope out the details and talk about it in a little more detail.

2017 Acura Precision Concept

With only three sedans and two SUVs to offer, Acura has been struggling to keep up with Lexus and Infiniti, the other two Japanese premium brands created specifically for the U.S. market. The fact that Acura committed to a rather bland corporate design, limited body styles, and a couple of engines didn’t help either. But, that may change soon, as the brand just previewed its next design language with a bold looking concept car at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

Dubbed Precision Concept, the vehicle in the photos hints toward a bolder, more distinctive future for Acura design. The show car was penned at the Acura Design Studio in California by the same people who crafted the NSX and is described as a model that "will literally shape the direction of all future Acura products."

The concept depicts a low-slung, sporty sedan with a fastback-like roof and features styling cues previously not seen on any Acura production car. There’s no word as to when the first model based on the Precision concept will hit showrooms, but the study has plenty of interesting features to talk about. 2017 Acura NSX GT3 Race Car

Acura hopes to homologate the NSX into the GT3 race class by fall of this year

The Acura NSX went on sale just a month ago, on February 25th, 2016, with the launch of its online configurator. With that being the case, it’s pretty easy to assume that we’ve heard the last news about the NSX for a while, but then Acura decides to throw us a curve ball. It showed up at the New York Auto Show with a GT3 variant of the new Acura NSX. Along with the debut of this new model comes Acura’s intent to homologate the model as an FIA GT3 class race car this fall.

As you probably know, this isn’t Acura’s first rodeo, as it has ran campaigns in the 1991 through1993 IMSA Camel Lights championships, the 2009 American LeMans championships – in LMP1 and LMP2 classes – and is currently running a couple of TLX GT cars with Real Time Racing in the Pirelli World Challenge. Should the NSX GT3 pass its current testing with flying colors, it will partake in GT3 racing later this year.

The NSX GT3 was initially developed by Acura’s Japanese race engineering team and has already tested on various circuits in Europe and Japan. The car is now undergoing testing in Santa Clarita, California, under Honda Performance Development – Acura’s North American race engineering group. Art St. Cyr, the president of HPD, said, “The NSX was designed as a pinnacle expression of Acura Precision Crafted Performance, and we’re looking forward to proving out its ultimate performance capabilities in GT3 racing.” He continued, “We’ll be working with the NSX engineering teams in Ohio and Japan to bring our dream of a truly world-class new Acura NSX race car to fruition.”

Given the overall acceptance and fan base of the new Acura NSX, it’s no surprise Acura is so quick to jump on the GT3 wagon. While the NSX GT3 shares a lot of commonalities with the road-going NSX, it also features its own unique differences that make it ready to take on the GT3 class. With that said, let’s take a look at the new NSX GT3 and what it will bring to the race track later this year.

Acura’s hot new crossover debuts in Beijing

The 2016 Beijing Auto Show is in full swing as Acura debuts its newest crossover, the CDX. This compact SUV is aimed directly at the exploding Chinese market. Honda, Acura’s parent company, is even building the crossover in China, at its ZengCheng Plant in Guangzhou City.

The CDX is roughly the same size as Honda’s CR-V, but carries a completely different look. Acura says the CDX’s design is inspired by the Precision Concept – a highly stylized sedan that stole hearts at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. The crossover’s introduction corresponds with Acura’s 10th year in China, making it a celebratory vehicle. There’s no word on whether Acura will release the CDX or a similarly styled cousin in other market regions, but we’re not betting on it.

Acura says the CDX will go on sale in China beginning in July of 2016 and will cost between 250- to 300,000 Yuan. At current enhance rates, which translates to $38,000 to $46,000.

Cool TLX-inspired design, but a disappointing "new" engine

The Acura ILX debuted for the 2013 model year as Acura’s first compact model since the Acura RSX was discontinued in 2006. After only a couple years on the market, Acura decided to refresh the ILX for the 2016 model year. The refresh wasn’t exactly extensive, but the ILX did gain updated front and rear fascias, a restyled front grille, five-point LED headlights, and LED taillights. Acura also dropped the 2.0-liter four-cylinder in favor of a 2.4-liter and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission from the TLX, giving the ILX a bump up to 201 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Interior updates were rather thin, but the interior did get some contrast stitching and some new technological add-ons that were available for the upper trim levels.

The ILX made its first debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, but didn’t go on sale until February of 2016. Of course, we were really hoping that the ILX would get a little more power, considering the only gain really came in the form of torque, but this was a simple facelift and Acura did good by us on the body and interior. A redesigned model isn’t expected until closer to 2020, so until then, the ILX will continue with minor changes from the 2016 refresh on. That said, the 2017 model has carried on unchanged and went on sale in April of 2016. Let’s take a closer look at the refreshed ILX and go over all the fine details.

2016 New York International Auto Show – Best In Show

A variety of flavors to satisfy your speed lust

I’ll just come out and say it – being the follow-up act to the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show is not an enviable position (check out some of our coverage here to see what I’m talking about). Nevertheless, the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) pulled it off, providing us with plenty of fresh metal worthy of our collective attention and desire. From muscle-bound track monsters, to European refinement, to Japanese tech, there really was a little bit of everything in the Big Apple this year. But the question is this – which models stood out as the best of the bunch?

The criteria for clinching a spot on this list is loose, but I’ll try to distill it down for you. A Best In Show winner has to stir emotion. It has to excel, both as a piece of design and a technical showcase. Significance in a historical context is a big plus. And of course, there’s the speed – big power, crazy specs, prowess in the twisties… you know, the good stuff.

The following five cars have all that and more, and if you love fast machinery, odds are you’ll find something to love in this list.

2015 Acura ILX By Galpin Auto Sports

If you haven’t heard about it yet, Acura recently has restored a 1993 Acura Legend that is owned by none other than Chris “Ludacris” Bridges. Ludacris took ownership of his Legend back in 1996 and had driven it daily up until last year when it was totaled in a car accident on the highway. Acura eventually got wind of Luda’s Legend and in turn offered to restore it for him. Along with the restoration, Acura also installed a new, Pioneer sound system a performance suspension system and even some fresh wheels.

OK, so this might not exactly be current news, but it does have ties to the 2015 SEMA Auto Show. No, Luda’s 1993 Acura Legend with 243,000 miles won’t be at SEMA, but a 2016 Acura ILX modified by Galpin Auto Sports will be – and it was built to complement the “Ludacris Legend.” The car has been modified extensively, but that isn’t the coolest part about this particular car. Once the SEMA conference comes to an end, the modified sports sedan, which is street-ready, will be donated to the Ludacris foundation.

As you can see from the pictures, the ILX has received a rather sporty and somewhat aggressive body kit, and a beautiful bright paint job, but we’re going to dig into it deeper to see just how far Galpin Auto sports went on Acura’s gateway sports sedan.

2015 Detroit Auto Show: Best in Show

As all the champagne glasses have been emptied and spotlights have been downgraded to regular indoor lighting, the 2015 edition of the North American International Auto Show is now welcoming regular folks instead of hungry journalists hunting for each and every press conference and its subsequent car launch. Unlike other editions, this year it was probably the most surprising in terms of premieres, mainly because the general consensus spoke about a very Ford-centric car show. Sure, there were plenty of worth-mentioning world premieres from every other American carmaker stables, with GM showing its 2016 Chevrolet Volt and the bonkers 2016 Cadillac CTS-V, while the 2015 Chevrolet Bolt Concept stopped a reasonable amount of presses as well.

The truth of the matter is that Ford pretty much stole the show, with the GT Concept even outshining the much-expected production version of the 2016 Acura NSX, while the 2016 Mustang GT350R and 2017 Ford Raptor were more than worthy sidekicks. With that being said, a number of other carmakers also brought a fair share of worthy premieres. Alfa Romeo showed everyone their all-new 2016 4C Spider, ready to complement the coupe version in being the first new Alfas in a long time to be officially available in the U.S., while Buick showed a very cool-looking but sadly futureless 2015 Avenir Concept.

Even though most trucks aren’t actually meant to be beauty queens, Nissan brought a somewhat visually-challenged new Titan in Detroit, but its Cummins V-8 with 555 pound-feet of torque will probably be more than enough to keep people from saying that it looks like a Chinese copy of the Ford F150. Speaking of new vehicles falling from the ugly tree, Audi premiered the all-new Q7 SUV, which comes packed with technology and a gigantic loss of weight to counteract its less-than-stellar looks, while Mercedes-Benz brought the 2016 GL63 Coupe to steal some sales from the latest BMW X6M. There were plenty of other cool or less-than-cool novelties in Detroit, but we figured we’d just choose the five best-of-show vehicles in the following list.

Ford May Have Rushed the GT’s Unveiling to Cool the NSX’s Debut

By far the two biggest gossip subjects at the 2015 edition of the North American International Auto Show, the 2017 Ford GT and 2016 Acura NSX may have ended up as premiers at the same show simply because of Ford’s marketing paranoia and combative stance. Why else was then almost every media outlet taken by surprise when Ford let it slip that an all-new GT will be unveiled in Detroit?

Let me explain: unlike the Acura NSX, which will start production and reach dealerships during the course of 2015, the upcoming Ford GT is rather far from finishing its development. Its actual production may start as late as the Summer of 2016 at the earliest, in order to also coincide with 50 years since the GT40 impressively won the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Further more, a racing version of the new GT could also signal Ford’s return to the grueling endurance race, albeit a pre-production prototype of either variant is yet to be caught by spy photographers.

You shouldn’t be regarded as a conspiracy theorist in believing that the blue GT that bowed in Detroit is simply a concept car built to test the waters, while the actual production version is still at least a year from being revealed. What does it have to do with the NSX, you ask? Well, in theory the two supercars are rather different from each other, despite both expected to compete for similar customers (read: people who want an American-made mid-engine supercar that’s cheaper than a Ferrari or Lamborghini with similar specs). My feeling is that Ford didn’t want Acura to run away with all the supercar laurels at the 2015 NAIAS and decided at the very last moment to bring the unchiseled GT to detract from the NSX’s attention.

2014 Acura RLX

2014 Acura RLX

The anticipated reveal of the replacement for the Acura RL has finally made its debut at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The all-new Acura RLX will make its production debut in early-2013, as a 2014 model year, giving Honda’s luxury lineup a head start for 2014.

We were all starting to wonder exactly what was in store for the RLX, since Acura announced its debut. Some of the questions that arose were around its power plant and whether or not this would simply be a restyled RL with an “X” on the end of its nameplate.

Acura answered all of those pertinent questions and then some at the auto show, as it pulled the sheet off of the new RLX and surprised everyone with a vehicle that bears little to no resemblance to its predecessor, something Honda Motor Company does not typically do. For the most part, Hondas tend to evolve rather slowly, with the exception of the latest Civic model, and rarely do we see big-time changes.

This all-new sedan is set to do battle with two newly redesigned imports, both of which debuted at the same auto show. On one side, you have the completely refreshed Toyota Avalon and on the other side, you have the redesigned Lexus ES 300h.

Can the RLX possibly fend off these two sister vehicles?

UPDATE 02/20/2013: Acura announced today pricing list for the 2014 RLX set to go on sale at a starting price of $48,450. Still, the car can get pretty expensive when adding an Advance Package; in this case price will start from $60,450.

Does This Patent Filing Leakage Show the Production 2014 Acura RLX?

Patent filings are sometimes the bane of secretive automaker’s existence. They try to sneak up and surprise the buyer by holding their cards close to their chest and not letting any information out about a new car. Well, the problem is that they need to patent these ideas to prevent other manufacturers from catching wind of their designs and stealing them. Then, you have savvy media folk that scour patent filings and dig up dirt on them, a la the Chevy SS, Cadillac ELR, Buick Electra, and so on.

We caught a glimpse of the 2014 Acura RLX concept car and its glorious beak in April and we were somewhat underwhelmed by it. Well, the savvy folk at Car and Driver recently dug up a patent from Europe showing what they are claiming to be the official production model 2014 RLX. Surprisingly, Acura’s production patent, or so it’s claimed to be, looks very much like the concept car. It appears that the only things that are different are the front lip design and the way the exhaust integrates into the bumper, which was far and away the coolest feature on the Concept RLX.

Unfortunately, the production RLX looks like it will retain the goofy looking “Jewel Eye” headlights, which are the two stacks of five LED lights making up the front headlights. On first glance, the “Jewel Eye” headlights did look a little neat, but it was definitely more of a novelty deal, as they now just look odd.

For those in favor of the ginormic Acura schnoz, don’t fear, as it appears to be in the same massive form as it was in at the NY International Auto Show.

Again, the true question is whether these actually are production images or just Acura patenting the basic RLX concept. Only time will tell, as we expect to see the real deal 2014 RLX in L.A. in November.
