The NSX gets garnished with some well deserved love

The second-gen Acura NSX is an amazing, mid-engined supercar that serves as a fine predecessor to the original. But, no matter how good a company makes its prized halo car, it can always be made better. And, that’s exactly what ScienceofSpeed has done for the second-gen NSX. There aren’t any serious engine upgrades to speak of (no, they didn’t throw on bigger turbos and upgrade the electric motors) but there are some minor upgrades to increase horsepower and torque a bit. The body isn’t neglected either, with a new aero kit and some fresh paint in place to fresh things up in the sun. Finally, the interior gets the orgasmic treatment as well, including things like new seats and updated custom upholstery.

Sounds pretty nice, right? Well, it’s not often that you find such a prominent aftermarket touch on a car like the NSX. After all, it’s only been on the market for a little over a year, and it took a long time for the name to be resurrected. So, what does this custom NSX have going for it? Adding a few bits and pieces to the entry-level premium four-door

First introduced in 2012, the Acura ILX is framed as the premium brand’s replacement for the Acura TSX, and continues the tradition as a premium compact sedan offered at a relatively affordable price. At the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, Acura ushered in a refresh for the 2016 model year, bringing an updated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed transmission, and new LED headlights. Now, there’s a special edition model on the table, and it gets sportier exterior styling plus new premium goodies in the cabin.

The new special edition is in dealers now, and it gets styling components pulled from the sporty-looking A-Spec package, plus premium touches in the cabin that help to justify the model’s luxurious aspirations. However, in terms of actual performance, the ILX Special Edition is essentially unchanged. Making the go is a standard-spec 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, with direct fuel injection, dual overhead cams, and the i-VTEC variable valve timing system. Sending the power to the front axle is an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which can be controlled via steering wheel paddle shifters if desired. Peak output is rated at 201 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while fuel mileage is rated at 25 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined. Pricing for the Special Edition model is set at $28,900, which is an $800 premium over the standard model.

Is Cadillac finally getting a worthy rival?

Launched in 1986, Acura has come a long way in 30 years, evolving from a small two-car lineup into a full-fledged automaker with no fewer than six offerings in 2017. Acura also entered motorsport very early, hitting the race tracks in 1991, just five years after its launch. So far, it has raced in some of the most important motorsport series, including the SCCA, IMSA GT, and the American Le Mans, scoring class wins at Daytona and Sebring. In 2009, the brand produced its very first LMP1 prototype car, the Acura ARX-02a. Come 2017, and the Japanese firm is joining the IMSA SportsCar Championship with its latest DPi prototype, the ARX-05.

Developed for the 2018 season, the ARX-05 will join the top tier of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, where it will go against Cadillac, Mazda, Ligier, and Nissan. A new team will bring together Acura Motorsports and Team Penske in an effort to win the championship against Cadillac, which has dominated the 2017 season. The multi-year DPi program will be headed by Honda Performance Development (HPD), the racing arm for both Acura Motorsports and Honda Racing in North America. The ARX-05’s official debut will take place at the season-opening Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona in January 2018.

Tech-laden mid-engine awesomeness from the Land of the Rising Sun

The Nissan GT-R is definitely the hottest thing to come from Japan nowadays, but when it comes to mid-engined supercars, the Honda/Acura NSX set all the benchmarks. At least it did until 2005, when Honda decided to pull the plug on the sports car it had developed with input from Ayrton Senna, a man regarded by many as the best Formula One driver of all time. The NSX went on sale in 1990 with a 270-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 behind its seats. The engine was later updated to a 3.2-liter V-6 that cranked out 290 ponies. While its output wasn’t exactly impressive compared to contemporary supercars, the NSX was still incredibly fast thanks to its low curb weight. Zero to 60 mph took 5.1 seconds when the car was first released, but the benchmark dropped to 4.5 seconds by the late ’90s. The NSX ceased production in 2005, when Honda announced plans to develop a successor. Fast-forward to the 2015 North American International Auto Show, where after years of teasing and concept reveals, the 2016 Acura NSX finally became a reality.

A quarter of a century after the original NSX debuted, the second generation couldn’t be more different, apart from the number of cylinders and engine configuration, of course. Powered by a twin-turbocharged, 75-degree V-6 engine paired with three electric motors and a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), the 2016 Acura NSX is here and it means business.

"Our global team embraced the challenge to create a new sports car experience, leveraging new technology to deliver incredibly vivid performance in a vehicle that responds intuitively and immediately to the will of the driver," said Ted Klaus, chief engineer and global development leader for the model. "The NSX delivers pinnacle supercar performance, with zero-delay acceleration and exhilarating, confidence-inspiring driving dynamics."

Unlike the rear-wheel-driven first generation, the new NSX comes with SH-AWD, with the front wheels powered by two of the three electric motors. Despite being a globally developed sports car, the 2016 NSX was largely designed by a team led by American engineers from Honda’s development center in Raymond, Ohio, while production took place in Marysville, Ohio.

Updated 05/25/2016: Th first Acura NSX rolled out of the production line at the new Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio. The first unit went to Rick Hendrick whom will receive a custom-ordered NSX, after a winning bid of $1.2 million at the Barrett-Jackson auction in January. Cool TLX-inspired design, but a disappointing "new" engine

The Acura ILX debuted for the 2013 model year as Acura’s first compact model since the Acura RSX was discontinued in 2006. After only a couple years on the market, Acura decided to refresh the ILX for the 2016 model year. The refresh wasn’t exactly extensive, but the ILX did gain updated front and rear fascias, a restyled front grille, five-point LED headlights, and LED taillights. Acura also dropped the 2.0-liter four-cylinder in favor of a 2.4-liter and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission from the TLX, giving the ILX a bump up to 201 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Interior updates were rather thin, but the interior did get some contrast stitching and some new technological add-ons that were available for the upper trim levels.

The ILX made its first debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, but didn’t go on sale until February of 2016. Of course, we were really hoping that the ILX would get a little more power, considering the only gain really came in the form of torque, but this was a simple facelift and Acura did good by us on the body and interior. A redesigned model isn’t expected until closer to 2020, so until then, the ILX will continue with minor changes from the 2016 refresh on. That said, the 2017 model has carried on unchanged and went on sale in April of 2016. Let’s take a closer look at the refreshed ILX and go over all the fine details.

After revealing the ILX Concept at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January, Acura has quickly followed it up with the production version at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. Carrying the same ILX name, the new sedan will be offered with a choice of two different engines, as well as a Hybrid version for those with a particular love for the environment.

The Acura ILX addresses the young buyers that are looking for their first luxury vehicle. Acura has promised the ILX will be a cheaper alternative to models like the Buick Verano and the Audi A3.

"First-time luxury buyers tend to place a high value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues, and that’s what we have created with the new Acura ILX," said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. "The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market."

Updated 06/17/2014: Acura announced prices for the 2015 ILX which continues to be offered with the same features as the 2014 model year. The only change includes a new Modern Steel Metallic exterior paint that replaces the Polished Metal Metallic.

After being previewed as a prototype at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the 2013 Acura RDX has finally been dropped into the market. For 2013 model year the RDX is offered in both FWD and AWD versions and prices will range from 34,320 to 39,420 for the model equipped with AWD system and Technology Package.

The 2013 Acura RDX is powered by a new 3.5-liter V-6 engine that now delivers a total of 273 HP - an increase of 33 HP over the current model. This engine will be combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter that will ensure a fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Exterior changes include a longer, sculpted hood, a longer wheelbase and wider track, all-new Amplitude Reactive Dampers, and a new motion adaptive electronic power steering system. For the interior, the company will be offering new sweeping shapes, a matte surface trim, and generous use of leather. The 2013 RDX will also offer larger door openings, more passenger room, increased cargo volume, and a power rear tailgate.

The list of standard equipment includes Pandora internet radio interface, SMS text message feature, a smart entry keyless access system, push-button start, and a three view rear camera.

Updated 04/03/2014: Acura announced today that the RDX will continue unchanged for the 2014 model year, with the only update being a new Kona Coffee exterior paint replacing the previous Amber Brownstone. Hit the jump to learn prices for the 2014 model year.

Acura has unveiled the first details on the 2011 RDX crossover that comes with Acura’s acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. The 2011 RDX is defined by bold front and rear fascias, Acura’s signature grille, pronounced wheel arches, 18-inch 10-spoke aluminum wheels, and upscale trim accents. On the inside, the RDX is stretched out with beautiful leather, stitchwork, and flowing curves. Add some cutting edge technology and we have a winner.

The interior gets leather trimmed front seats, multiple storage compartments, Acura Premium Sound System with AM/FM tuner, 6-disc in-dash CD player, MP3, WMA, XM Radio, 7 speakers, and a 360 watt amplifier.

The 2011 RDX is powered by the same turbocharged 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine that was found in the previous model. It delivers a total of 240 HP at 6,000 rpm with 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission and delivers 19/24/21 mpg on the RDX 2WD models and 17/22/19 mpg on the RDX SH-AWD ones.
