2019 Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept

Based on the Jeep Renegade, it’s the company’s first hybrid vehicle

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a crossover concept introduced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Smaller than the Stelvio, the Tonale concept is based on the Jeep Renegade and previews the company’s second crossover. It’s also Alfa Romeo’s first hybrid vehicle. There’s no word as to when it will go in production, but it should happen sometime in 2020.

It’s been three years since Alfa Romeo joined the SUV market with the Stelvio, and the Italian firm is considering an expansion. With full access to parent company FCA’s platforms, Alfa Romeo is putting the Small Wide 4x4 chassis to good use. Already available in the Jeep Renegade, Jeep Compass, and Fiat 500X, these underpinnings will be adopted by the Tonale, Alfa Romeo’s smallest crossover yet. When it hits the market in 2020, the production version of this concept will compete against premium offerings like the Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1.

2019 Mole Costruzione Artigianale Almas

Mole Costruzione Artigianale Almas oozes Italian style. It leaves a little tricolored puddle wherever it sits. It’s currently just a design study by Mole, the company that you may remember from its custom Alfa Romeo 4C project called Alfa Romeo Mole Costruzione Artigianale 001.

Unlike that Alfa Romeo 4C-based project, though, the Mole Almas isn’t built on another car’s underpinnings - it’s bespoke GT car with its own platform and this has given designers the freedom to make it look even more extreme. Its exterior design and styling certainly, the work of Umberto Palermo and Paolo Scudieri, make it stand out and the result is quintessentially Italian and very sculptural - it very successfully borrows design elements from classic Alfa Romeo and Maserati models, but everything is neatly integrated and the result is very visually cohesive.

Both its chassis and body are made from carbon fiber in order to keep weight down. We don’t know how much it weighs, or any technical facts for that matter, but we may learn more after it debuts at the 2019 Geneva motor show.

2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Euro Spec

Alfa Romeo introduces a new Stelvio trim level with the familiar 280 horsepower four-pot under the hood

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has already been around for a while, and the Italian automaker will introduce a new, posh, trim line at the 89th Geneva Auto Show called the Ti. It stands for ’Turismo Internazionale,’ and it’s a nod to Alfa’s storied past. This variant will be equipped with the meatier of the two 2.0-liter, turbocharged, inline-four engines, new burnished taillights, and new wheels to round things out.

This piece of news may already seem confusing to those of you that are familiar with Alfa’s American range of models. That’s because over in the U.S., Alfa is already offering the Stelvio Ti for the 2019 model year. In fact, you can choose between the $44,495 Stelvio Ti, the $46.995 Stelvio Ti Lusso, and the $47,295 Stelvio Ti Sport. All of these come with the 2.0-liter, turbocharged, inline-four engine too. However, there will be differences between the European-spec model and the U.S.-spec ones.

2019 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Italia

Far from special, but limited to 15 units in the U.S.

Introduced in 2013 as the company’s first true-blue sports car in decades, the Alfa Romeo 4C soldiered on into 2019 with almost no upgrades. At the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, the Italian company launched the 4C Spider Italia, a limited-edition roadster with a handful of extra features. Although it doesn’t stray far from the regular model, it confirms that the 4C Spider will remain in production for the 2020 model year.

With the Coupe discontinued at the end of 2018, the Spider remains in dealerships for at least one more year, but the Italia is far from special. Finished in an exclusive paint and fitted with custom graphics and badges, it’s just a poor attempt to keep this bare-bones sports car appealing among newer products. Is it worth getting one? Once among the greatest auto companies in the world, Alfa Romeo began to struggle in the 1980s. And needless to say, the 1990s and 2000s weren’t exactly great either. But the Italians regrouped and launched the 4C, thus regaining some of its past glory. The Giulia joined in to give Alfa Romeo its much-needed performance sedan, but the FCA-owned brand also jumped on the SUV bandwagon and introduced the Stelvio. Put into production 2016, the Stelvio also gained the famed Quadrifoglio package and went on to set a new lap record for SUVs on the iconic Nurburgring track. To celebrate the event, Alfa Romeo created the Stelvio Quadrifoglio Nurburgring Edition, an extremely limited version of the performance hauler.

Currently the fastest production SUV around the Nurburgring, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio lapped the German track in seven minutes and 51.7 seconds. The tribute model comes in the same specs as the vehicle that set the record, but with a few extras on top. It’s also limited to only 108 units, one for each year that passed since Alfa Romeo was established in Milan, Italy. Just as nice as the QV, but without all the power

Alfa Romeo did work backward when it came to the new Giulia Sedan. It threw its top performer, the Giulia Quadrifoglio into the mix first, showcasing its beautiful looks and 505-horsepower, 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6. But, there’s more to the Giulia than that. See, the Giulia is sort of like Alfa Romeo’s rebirth here in America, kicking off the introduction of several all-new models that will join the tiny, but fun 4C Coupe and 4C Spider. Alfa didn’t waste any time debuting the rest of the Giulia lineup, which means you don’t have to pay for the range-topping model unless you really want to. Outside of the Quadrifoglio model, the Giulia is available in two other guises: the entry-level model and the Giulia Ti. As far as the non-Quadrifoglio versions go, you get a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder that delivers a cool 280 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque. Other standard features include a seven-inch infotainment system, LED exterior lighting, dual exhaust, and can be had with all-wheel drive for a small premium.

The Giulia is set to go on sale here in the U.S. for the 2017 model year and is focused around the driver. Reid Bigland, the Head of Alfa Romeo, said, The all-new Giulia is the result of our 105 years of passion for Italian style, craftsmanship, and performance. Crafted in Italy, the Giulia lineup sets an entirely new benchmark for the segment as the world’s fastest four-door production sedan, featuring class-leading engines, an all-new exclusive architecture, stunning design and state-of-the-art technology.”

And, he’s absolutely right. This is one of those cars that is clearly living up to the hype created over the past couple of years. It’s affordable, stylish, and ready to take on the competition. But, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s have a better look at the new Alfa Romeo Giulia.

505-horsepower competitor for the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63

Rumors about Alfa Romeo’s plans to revive the Giulia nameplate have been floating around since 2012, but it took the Italians until 2015 to actually reveal a modern incarnation of its iconic compact sedan. Developed as a rear-wheel-drive competitor for the 2016 BMW 3 Series and the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the new Giulia also marks the brand’s return to its RWD roots. Making the news that much better is that Alfa Romeo kicked this revival off with a high-performance model aimed at the 2016 BMW M3 and 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63.

Meet the Giulia Quadrifoglio, the beefed-up sedan that’s been forged with just one purpose: to obliterate its German rivals.

This is indeed a great moment for Alfa Romeo, which has just launched its first RWD sedan since 1992, when the 75/Milano model was discontinued. From then on, Fiat took over and replaced it with the 155, 156, and the 159. The 159 was retired in 2011, putting an end to Alfa Romeo as a compact executive-car manufacturer. Come 2015 and the Italian brand finally has something to brag about.

Two mid-level models strengthen Alfa’s Giulia portforlio

The Paris Auto Show is usually packed with just about every auto manufacturer under the sun, but this year the show is going to be missing a number of big names. We first learned that Volvo, Ford, Aston Martin, and Rolls-Royce would be missing, and more recently we’ve learned that Bentley and Lamborghini will also be skipping out on the show. That’s a lot of big names, but there’s at least one automaker that will be in Paris in full force with a number of new cars. That automaker is Alfa Romeo, and one of those cars is the new Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce – a model that debuts two new engines (one gasoline and one diesel) and Alfa’s long awaited Q4 all-wheel drive system. These engines represent the basis for two mid-level models with the gasoline-powered 2.0-liter producing 280 horsepower and the 2.2-liter diesel promising 210 horsepower. But, we’ll talk more about the available engines later.

With these two new models, it has become pretty clear that Alfa has quite literally worked backward as far as releasing models. The brand started out balls to the wall with the Giulia QV and its 505-horsepower, 2.9-liter V-6, and then it announced the entry-level Giulia. Now, we’re getting the middle of the spectrum with these new gasoline and diesel powertrains. While it’s a little backward, these new models should be significantly cheaper than the QV and should provide a price point that makes the Giulia attainable for those who can’t afford the $70,000 price tag of that crazy Giulia QV but want to spend more than $50,000 for the entry-level model. With that said let’s dive on into the new Giulia Veloce models and go over all the details.

Based on the Alfa Romeo 8C, powered by an all-motor V-8

At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Touring Superleggera unveiled the Disco Volante, a concept car that paid tribute to a series of experimental race cars built by the same firm in cooperation with Alfa Romeo in the early 1950s. A year later, the Disco Volante was turned into a production model using Alfa Romeo 8C underpinnings and a 4.7-liter V-8 engine. Three years have passed since the then and Touring Superleggera returned to Geneva with the Disco Volante Spyder — a convertible version of the same coach built sports car.

Created to celebrate the company’s 90th anniversary, the Disco Volante Spyder is actually a more accurate interpretation of the original car, which was also conceived as a spider drop-top. The vehicle is actually more of a targa due to the flying buttresses behind the seats, but it’s still an open-top that has more in common with the first Disco Volante compared to the coupe the Italians launched in 2013.

Other than that, the Spyder is just as sexy and employs the same sporty underpinnings as its coupe sibling. Touring Superleggera has confirmed that the Disco Volante Spyder will be built in small numbers, having already received European approval and support from Alfa Romeo. Don’t expect to see a Disco Volante Spyder in your neighborhood anytime soon, as only seven examples will be built. They will also be quite expensive and sold only to carefully selected customers.

Definitely not the update we’ve been hoping for

The Giulietta name has had a pretty bumpy history. Originally used between 1965 and 1965, the name was discontinued until 1977. This Giulietta, dubbed Type 116, was produced from 1977 to 1985 at which point the name was once again discontinued. Alfa Romeo revised the name for the third time in 2010 for the Type 940 Giulietta, which is still produced today and received a facelift for the 2016 model year. It became blatantly obvious that Alfa Romeo is still struggling as a brand, as the face life to the Giulietta was so mild that it’s outright disturbing. Exterior updates we limited to a new grille mesh, new Alfa Romeo shield, a revamped badge, and minor changes to the rear fascia to go with a new set of alloy rims. The engine lineup for the Giulietta didn’t change much for 2016, but there is a new 1.6-liter unit, and inside changes were limited to an updated infotainment system.

It comes off very boring and lazy, indeed. In fact, you might as well save money and buy an older model, or wait for the next-gen model that should be arriving sometime in 2018. It’s a little surprising, however, considering the Giulietta competes against the likes of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. For a company that really wants to turn itself around, it’s not working very hard at bringing fresh products to market. The Giulia was delayed, as was the brand’s first SUV. Add this excessively boring facelift to the mix, and you’ve got a company that might not survive if it doesn’t pick up the pace.

2011 Alfa Romeo 4C GTA Concept

With only a teaser image to go on days before the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, everyone was thrilled to see Alfa Romeo unveil the 4C GTA Concept. According to Alfa Romeo, the 4C GTA is "a compact supercar" which represents the true essence of a sports car and is in line with the brand’s values: performance, Italian style, and technical excellence aimed at maximum driving pleasure in total safety."

The 4C GTA concept is inspired by models like the 8C Competizione and 8C Spider models, but takes their design a step forward. While the two models were focusing on obtaining more power, the 4C GTA Concept’s focus is on weight reduction thanks to the extensive use of carbon.

The concept is powered by a "4 cylinder" 1750 Turbo Petrol engine that delivers an impressive 200 HP that sprints the car to an impressive 155 mph.

UPDATE 08/30/2011: A few months ago, it was rumored that Alfa Romeo would bring an updated version of the 4C GTA Concept to the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Unfortunately, the first details revealed suggest that the only "update" the concept will receive is a new "Fluid Metal" livery that dynamically enhances the smooth, curvy, and original lines of the car. The company has also confirmed that a production version will follow in in 2013. The car will weight around 1873 lbs and will deliver up to 200 HP and a weight to power ratio less than 4 kg/HP.

UPDATE 09/16/2011: During the Alfa Romeo 4C GTA official debut in Frankfurt, the company officials have confirmed that the production version will follow in 2013 and will most likely be the first model to be sold by Alfa Romeo in the USA. Alfa plans to build 15,000 to 20,000 units of the 4C coupe over five years and another 5,000 to 10,000 roadsters will be built by Abarth. In Europe, prices will start from about about 45,000 euros, around $61,000 at the current exchange rates. (AutomotiveNews)
