Ever since Alfa Romeo announced it would bring “something new” to the 4C with every passing year, we’ve been speculating what the Italian automaker might have up its sleeve. Though it’s pure speculation at this point, our rendering artist has put together a possible direction for a future direction, the 4C Quadrifoglio Verde.
The Quadrifoglio Verde name harks back to Alfa’s long history of performance vehicles dating back to 1923, and this car would be no different. Likely getting a slight bump in power, the coupe gets an even more aggressive body treatment with several new scoops, front and rear fascias, and accent lines.
Its front fascia gets a completely redesigned bumper with larger air intakes near the darkened headlights. Around the side, a lowered body skirt helps bring the 4C’s visual mass lower to the ground. Out back, a new lower bumper sports a new exhaust pipe design while the rear quarter panels have another cooling slot near the round taillights. Topping it all off are the iconic green cloverleaf and grey triangle badges. A new set of 10-spoke grey wheels helps complete the more aggressive look.
While it’s still unclear what Alfa has planned for its future 4C special editions, we suspect they will consist mostly of cosmetic changes, with only slight modifications to the suspension and engine.

The Alfa Romeo 4C still hasn’t arrived in the U.S. and yet, company executives are already thinking of building more performance-oriented versions of the low-volume sports car. Company CEO Harald Wester made the proclamation, telling Automotive News that while the 4C already has the makings of an impressive sports car, there’s still plenty of room for improvement, especially if it wants to be as big of a hit in the U.S. market as it is in Europe.
This rationale looks to confirm Alfa’s previous announcement that it plans to make annual updates of the 4C in the next four or five years, including the possibility of even building a more performance-oriented version that could appeal to a U.S. market that prefers sports cars that also have the added luxury appeal.
One of the first things Wester brought up was the potential for the 4C’s chassis to handle more power while also tinkering with the car’s turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. "We are only at 134 horsepower per liter, so there is space," Wester told Automotive News.
As for the U.S.-spec 4Cs, Alfa remains cognizant in its belief that offering a European-spec 4C to a U.S. market is a bad business move. That’s why it’s building a different spec 4C that has better equipment to go along with its own share of technical changes. That includes putting in place a different monocoque, reinforcing the suspension, and adding new and improved headlights that we all first saw on the 4C Spider.
Or in the words of Wester, "a significant overhaul."
With all these changes expected for the U.S.-spec Alfa Romeo 4C, you can be sure that the cars are going to command a steep price. Alfa has yet to announce the price, but reportedly the base 4C will retail for about $55,000 with a top-of-the-line, fully-loaded model fetching close to $70,000.

We already know that Mazda and Alfa Romeo are in bed together on the MX-5 Miata/Alfa Romeo Spider project, but the specifics were still a relative unknown. A little bird, in the form of a senior design source, flew down and chirped a little info to our friends at What Car. We cannot vouch for the validity of this info, but we’re going to pass it on to you.
First up, the engine... According to this unnamed source, Mazda has chosen an engine already and it is a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. It pumps out a healthy 200 horsepower, which is 22 horsepower more than the 2004 and 2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 produced and 33 horsepower more than the current model. We’re also certain that we’ll see torque cresting the 200 pound-feet mark, though there was no mention of that.
The source also reports that the MX-5 will hit showrooms in 2015 with a lighter body and chassis, and a sportier look than the current model. The estimated weight the source gave was 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs), which is 276 lbs less than the 2012 model. In a car as small as the Miata, that is significant weight loss, to say the least.
There is also talk that Mazda will offer its roadster up with many more options that will help give the car more of a personality. This will help form a stronger bond between the person and the car. Typically, Miata owners already have this bond with their car, but a little extra something can’t hurt.
Lastly, there will be a top-end model, similar to the Mazdaspeed version in 2004 and 2005, that will be even lighter yet and more tuned for racing, as it will be stripped of unnecessary add-on features to save every ounce.
There was one bit of info on the project altogether and it is that Mazda will only provide the platform (chassis, uni-body, and drivetrain); Alfa Romeo will add on its own body and interior. So scratch the evil idea that we’ll have two almost identical cars.

Last week, we reported that Fiat was open to allowing Mazda to use U.S.-based Chrysler factories to manufacture U.S.-bound Mazda models. Before that, Fiat and Mazda officially announced a partnership in building the MX5 Miata and Alfa Romeo Spider. These two announcements brought about a lot of speculation of Fiat taking the same approach that Ford did, by buying into the struggling, but slowly recovering, Mazda.
After hearing plenty of these rumors, Fiat Chairman, John Elkann, had enough and announced at a shareholder meeting that Fiat is not interested in acquiring any percentage of Mazda in the future. Fiat does plan on adding a Japanese partner in the future to help expand its global reach, but there is no mention of what companies Fiat is considering.
We would not be surprised to find out that this is simply a rouge to not tip its hand too early. It only makes sense for the two to partner up in a larger sense, as Mazda needs some help getting over the recovery hump and Fiat needs a Japanese partner. It would be a win-win situation, so we’ll see if Fiat’s tune changes after testing out Mazda’s abilities with the Mazda Miata-Alfa Romeo Spider production deal.
Fiat is planning a little bit of expansion soon though. In July 2012, Fiat is planning to expand its ownership in Chrysler by an additional 3 percent, bringing its total ownership to over 60 percent. Over the course of time, Fiat plans to jump its overall Chrysler ownership to 100 percent, giving it complete control over the recovering automaker’s operations and profit.
It definitely looks like Fiat is on the right track here so far. We will keep you updated as its expansion continues.
While everyone is waiting for the Alfa Romeo 4C GTA to debut in production form and find its way over to the US, other variations may currently be in the pipeline as well. New reports suggest that the 4C concept will not only preview a two-seater model for Abarth and Alfa, but will also come in some other derivatives, including a Maserati model.
The 4C GTA concept is powered by a "4 cylinder" 1750 Turbo Petrol engine located centrally in the rear of the vehicle and mated to a new automatic "Alfa TCT" twin dry clutch transmission. With a total output of 200 HP, the engine will sprint the concept from 0 to 60 mph in just 5 seconds, while top speed goes up to 155 mph. However, we anticipate that the Maserati variant will be both more powerful and sportier, but we’ll have to wait until about 2013 or 2014 to see it in action.
Dutch web page, Autojunk, has posted a suspicious little spy video of a new car that is believed to be the Alfa Romeo 4C GTA Concept set to be revealed in just a couple of weeks at the Geneva Motor Show. All we’ve seen on the concept so far is a teaser image provided by Alfa Romeo, but if we can believe what we see in this video, then it looks like the 4C will definitely be borrowing some elements from its bigger brother, the 8C Competizione.
The Alfa Romeo 4C will be offered in both GTA and Spider versions, and recent rumors suggest that the GTA 4C Concept will be built on the same platform as the KTM X-BOW. A four-cylinder TBi 1750 petrol engine tuned to deliver around 265 HP is also said to be fitted underneath the hood. Of course, these are all speculations at the moment, but the truth will be set free when the sheets are peeled away from the Alfa Romeo 4C GTA Concept on March 3rd, 2011.

According to some of the latest reports, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta will be the base for the new Dodge Caliber, just without the Italian flare and style. The new Caliber is set to arrive in late 2011 as the 2012 model.
This is all according to USA Today who credits Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler and Fiat, as saying that the Giulietta will serve as a Dodge. As rumors go, this one is quite good, as the company’s five year plan shows the Caliber being discontinued in 2011, and Chrysler will need to fill that hole.
A new successful small car is hugely important for Chrysler, as they will have nothing to compete against theFord Fiesta and Focus and the Chevrolet Cruze and the new Aveo. A vehicle based on the gorgeous Giuliette might be what the company needs.
Recently, Fiat has expressed interest in expanding their stake in Chrysler beyond 20 percent and the only way that happens is if they have big success in the U.S and the Giulietta might be just what the doctor ordered.
Rumors and even some confirmed reports are going around tying together Chrysler, Fiat and Tata. Starting in the U.S., Chrysler may partner with Tata to sell Jeep Wrangler’s to the Indian market. What is alarming about this plan came from an investment banker watching the deal. "You could definitely see this evolve into something," the banker said. "It would make sense for Tata to buy Jeep if this partnership went through ... and Chrysler could really do with selling a brand and getting some cash." Jeep, America’s brand for sale! Say it ain’t so Chrysler.
Chrysler also has extra manufacturing capacity from the SUV sales slowdown, and Fiat may lease factory space to bring production to the U.S. This may also tie Chrysler’s dealer network into the possible return of Fiat brands including Alfa Romeo.
Fiat and Tata are already attached to a deal that will have Fiat provide
financing for Jaguar and Land Rover, In return, Fiat would possibly sell the Tata’s ultra-economy Nano in Europe.
In a way, this could set up Lee Iacocca’s “Global Motors” dream of over 30 years ago. Iacocca thought about bringing together an American, European, and Japanese car company to make a worldwide automotive conglomerate. The idea allowed for utilizing the U.S.’s manufacturing strength, European style, and Japanese knowledge of good economy cars. Although Tata is not Japanese, the Indian firm is looking to show the world it knows how to make an inexpensive car. So, if all this goes through, someone better build a chart to keep track of what car is coming from where.
The Alfa Romeo 169 will to arrive in 2008. It will share the Maserati Quattroporte’s platform. The 169 comes to replace the 166, a car that had never been a strong seller. The new Alfa Romeo will compete with models like Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and future 2009 Porsche Panamera. The 169 will be one of the models that will be sold in USA on Alfa Romeo’s return.
