The Alfa Romeo 6C name, one that’s related to many race cars, sports cars and grand tourers built between 1929 and 1954, is about to make a spectacular return to the company’s lineup. At least that’s the word from Auto Express, who claims the Italians are working on a 6C sports car that will compete against the Jaguar F-Type. The report goes on to say that the 6C will be based on the Maserati Alfieri, which rides on the same platform that underpins the Ghibli sedan.

Alfa Romeo will borrow more than just the platform, Auto Express adds. The sports car will slot above the 4C and will borrow its twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V-6 from the Ghibli. The six-banger will reportedly deliver between 480 and 520 horsepower, a figure that will push the 6C into F-Type V-8 and Porsche 911 Turbo territory. Exciting news, yes, but make sure you keep that salt shaker within reach until further notice.

If such a vehicle makes it into production, it will likely arrive in 2017, a year after the Maserati Alfieri hits dealerships. Assembly will be limited to a few thousand units.

Word Has it That there’s a V6-Powered, Alfa Romeo 6C in the Works!

If true, the 6C would slot above the 4C and become Alfa’s halo performance car

Alfa Romeo isn’t messing around. On the heels of launching the Giulia sedan and the Stelvio SUV, the Italian automaker is reportedly at work developing a new model that will slot above the 4C. The model is set to be called the 6C, a nod to the number of cylinders it has in its engine. Alfa is eyeing a 2020 launch for the 6C so expect the coupé to make its debut sometime before that.

1951 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Villa D’Este Coupe

In the Italian spirit of naming cars after the engines in them, the Alfa Romeo 6C nameplate was applied to a huge range of 6-cylinder cars from 1927 all of the way up to 1954. Some of these were race cars, some were road cars, and a lot of them had very little in common with one another. Even narrowing it down to the 6C 2500 means we’re still talking about 11 different models of just the road-going version. So the significance of the 6C 2500 SS Villa d’Este might sometimes get lost in the shuffle of keeping all of these cars straight.

The Villa d’Este was one of the most expensive cars in the world when it was introduced in very limited quantities starting in 1949. It was one of the last 6C road cars and the last Alfa Romeo to be hand built. It was the most powerful of the non-racing 6C 2500 varieties, and had the shortest and most sporting wheelbase of the 2500s. It is named after a former royal residence on Lake Como in northern Italy. The annual Concorso d’Eleganza held there is one of the most important in the world of collector cars.
