Alfa Giulia GTAm - best Alfa Romeo ever

Alfa Giulia GTAm - best Alfa Romeo ever

During a long history of 100 years, Alfa Romeo has created more than 70 models, and what better to draw a little attention to your brand than creating a poll among British Alfa Romeo fans to determine which one of those 70 models is the best. And the winner is...the Alfa Romeo GTAm by a hair of less than 1% over the 8C Competizione.

The Alfa Giulia GTAm was a two door coupe produced y Alfa Romeo in 1970-1971. It was powered by a 2.0 L straight-4 engine producing up to 240hp. It was derived from the standard 1750 GT Veloce production model with a SPICA mechanical fuel injection system. A highlight of the GTAm’s career was winning the 1970 European Touring Car Championship in the hands of Dutchman Toine Hezemans. It beat out the competition in this poll with a 20.4% vote. The 8C Competizione followed the GTAm with a 19.8%.

"The Giulia GTAm was a great Alfa and a deserved winner. It’s really interesting to see how people voted in the poll. We all have our favorites which is testament to the fantastic cars Alfa Romeo has produced over the past century." For those of you interested, the latest GTAm is on sale in dealerships across the UK.

Alfa Romeo GT out of production; no successor planned

Alfa Romeo GT out of production; no successor planned

We’ve all recently had the pleasure to check out the Japan only GT special edition, the Quadrifoglio d’Oro. It was unveiled at the end of July and we had thought it was the mark of many good things to come for Alfa Romeo. Well, we were partly right. We still think great things will be coming out of Alfa Romeo, such as their new Alfa Romeo 8C and their upgraded 159 sedan and station wagon versions, but what won’t be part of Alfa Romeo’s future is the GT. Apparently, the Quadrifoglio d’Oro will be the last Alfa Romeo GT ever built. According to Sergio Marchionne, the GT will go out of production after only 7 years and no successor is currently on the table. Where did it go wrong?

The Alfa Romeo GT was unveiled in 2003 at the Geneva Motor Show. It was developed by Bertone as a sporty alternative for the 147 and 156 (sharing the same platform with the two models). However, Alfa Romeo only sold 25,000 units in the Italian market which is where the company had the biggest expectations. Not a good thing. We think one of the biggest mistakes that contributed to the lack of success for the Alfa Romeo GT was Alfa Romeo’s decision to not offer a facelift version for it as initially planned.

2010 Alfa Romeo GT Quadrifoglio d'Oro

2010 Alfa Romeo GT Quadrifoglio d’Oro

Alfa Romeo has had one heck of a year for 2010. They are right smack in the middle of celebrating their centennial anniversary and are taking advantage of that in a serious way. Part of their celebration was taking part in the Goodwood Festival of Speed in a “shine in the spotlight” kind of way. Not only did they bring their new Alfa Romeo 8C to the festival, but they also brought over 50 historic vehicles to showcase during the event and were given the honor of creating a statue to use as the ‘Central Feature’, a statue that’s prominently displayed every year in front of the Goodwood house. Another portion of their celebratory movement was bringing out their restyled and upgraded 159 sedan and station wagon models out to the market. Great things are happening at Alfa Romeo and they don’t want it to stop.

Now Alfa Romeo has decided to bring out a special edition model strictly for the Japanese market. It’s called the Alfa Romeo GT Quadrifoglio d’Oro (Golden Clover) and will feature custom gold badging. The exterior paint finish is a vibrant red that is mirrored in the red painted brake calipers. The exterior also features a chrome trim at the lower part of the front fascia.

Alfa GT and 156 by JMS Racelook

Alfa GT and 156 by JMS Racelook

Although the Alfa GT and 156 have been on the streets for a few years, the German tuner JMS thought it would be a good idea to refresh the Italian cars and looking at the photos we can say they did quite a good job. The revised Italian cars come with a brand-new front lip spoiler, with a new suspension kit lowering the vehicles with up to 55 mm, side sills and a new set of black polished 19-inch JMS wheels. Price of the kit: $4000 for the Alfa 156 or $2530 for the Alfa GT.

Alfa GT rendering

Yesterday we brought you a few details about theMito Cabrio and the 159 Crossover, and now Alfa Romeo is making news again today with a rendering of a future Alfa Romeo GT. The car was designed by Luca De Meo and is inspired by the 8C and MiTo. Right now it’s only a concept and is a car that the company has no plans to put into production. But hopefully a good public response will change their mind.
