Aston Martin has come up with a DBR1-spec V12 Speedster which pays homage to the namesake 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours winner. This will be an optional package that brings about aesthetic changes to the exterior and the interior. There are no changes made to the powertrain specs. Aston Martin hasn’t even mentioned the price of this package, but expect the final cost of the V12 Speedster DBR1 to cross $1 million. That’s a lot of money.

Not The First DBR1 Edition On A Modern Car

The DBR1 is one of the most significant products in the automaker’s history. It established Aston Martin as a competitor that can’t be taken lightly in global motorsports. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the automaker is paying homage to the DBR1. Aston Martin had rolled out ’59’ editions of the DBS Superleggera and the Vantage AMR sometime last year.

What’s So Special About The DBR1 V12 Speedster?

This optional package brings in a plethora of goodies to distinguish it from the standard V12 Speedster. For starters, the car will be painted in the iconic Aston Martin Racing Green paint shade with Clubsport White pinstripe and roundels. A Satin Silver anodized grille will grace the face along with Clubsport lipstick graphics. It will ride on 21-inch, machine-finished, Satin Black center-lock wheels.

On the inside, the DBR1 V12 Speedster will come with multiple materials. Conker saddle leather, Viridian Green technical textile, and Caithness leather are some of the stuff used here. It will come with generous use of gloss carbon fiber here, too. Aluminum switchgear is the other element that gives an ode to the DBR1’s rich heritage. Apart from this, the Speedster V12 DBR1 will also come with helmets for the driver and passenger finished in the matching Aston Martin Racing Green shade.

There are no changes made to the powertrain. This DBR1-spec V12 Speedster will be powered by the same V-12 engine as the standard car.It displaces at 5.2 liters and makes 690 ponies and 555 pound-feet of twist. It is mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. Power is routed to the ground via the rear wheels exclusively. As for the performance specs, it takes 3.4 seconds to sprint to 62 mph from rest and has a top speed of 198 mph. This is very impressive for an open-top car.

The car first came out in 1956 and lasted till 1959. It was initially powered by a 2.5-liter, six-cylinder engine, but the next year, it came with a slightly bigger 3.0-liter engine. The engine made 254 horses, but the car had a power-to-weight ratio of 317 horsepower per tonne. Power was sent to the wheels via a David Brown five-speed manual gearbox.

The DBR1 took approximately six seconds to hit the 60 mph mark from a standstill and went all the way up to 150 mph before losing breath. One of the biggest reasons the car remains in the limelight is because it was driven by none other than Carroll Shelby at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

In 2017, a DBR1 came up at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale and was sold for $22.6 million!

Final Thoughts

Aston Martin will be producing 88 examples of the V12 Speedster in total. The supercar is priced at $950,000 in the standard form. There’s no word on how much this package will cost, but as mentioned earlier, it will breach the $1 million mark. The automaker is now accepting orders for the DBR1 custom V12 Speedsters. Each one will be built at the company’s Gaydon headquarters, with deliveries expected to begin in mid-2021.
