1953 Aston Martin DB3S Works
The Aston Martin DB3S is a special car although it may have been overshadowed as years came and went by a certain finned Jaguar and the DBR1/300 that won at La Sarthe for David Brown’s marque. However, its status as a bit of a giant killer and the fact that the boys in Feltham kept using it for four seasons in international competitions puts the DB3S in a unique spot in Jaguar’s racing history. This car, chassis #2, is one of only 11 works cars ever built and it won the Goodwood Nine Hours ahead of the D-Type and Ferrari’s 750 Monza. It is, then, no wonder that RM/Sotheby’s hoped it would sell for anywhere between $8.75 and $10 million when it crossed the block last Thursday during the Monterey Car Week. Well, it didn’t but you can’t deny this is one rare, gorgeous, and expensive product of the ’50s. Need further proof? A copy of the definitive book on this car sold 14 years ago for some $1,500.
When you talk ’50s sports cars, your mind slaloms between William Haynes’ C-Type and D-Type, together amassing five overall 24 Hours of Le Mans wins, the classic 250 Testa Rossa, the dominant but also infamous 300 SLR, and also the Lister Knobbly and Maserati’s 300S. Aston Martin isn’t among the names on the tip of your tongue despite it racking up quite an impressive number of wins between 1953 and 1959 with the DB3S and the DBR1 respectively. That’s because the Aston Martins were always seen as underdogs, always seen as members of the pack, those that’ll play second fiddle to the big fish when, in fact, it wasn’t like that at all. David Brown employed some of the best engineers and drivers at the time and his cars were some of the best. Yes, most often down on power, yes, most often with an Achilles’ heel (cough, the DBR1’s gearbox and ergonomics) but they were good cars. And now we’ll talk about the first one of those, the DB3S, offspring of the DB3 and a car that’s getting a bad rep for being actually friendly on the road.

The Aston Martin DB5 is one of the most famous cars in the world thanks to its role as James Bond’s means of transportation in the first two James Bond movie adaptations of Ian Fleming’s novels. The Silver Birch beauty with coachwork by Touring became a star thanks to its myriad of hidden weapons and clever equipment added by the Q branch. While the cars actually used during filming or during the promotion of the two films starring Sean Connery are the rarest, the ones that are the most practical are also insanely rare. These are the long-roofed ’Shooting Brake’ DB5s built in period by coachbuilder Harold Radford after then-company-owner David Brown complained that the DB5 isn’t practical enough and he can’t take his dog with him when hunting. Only 12 were ever built and this is one of just four with the steering wheel on the left-hand side.

Aston Martin Inches Closer to Completing the DBS GT Zagato
Aston Martin unveiled the final exterior design of the upcoming DBS GT Zagato, a limited-edition vehicles based on the DBS Superleggera. Just like the Vanquish-based Zagato models from 2018, the DBS GT Zagato will be built in very limited numbers. However, while the Vanquish Zagato was built in four body styles — coupe, convertible, shooting brake, and speedster — the DBS Zagato was unveiled as a coupe only. Another big difference is that the DBS Zagato will be sold in a pair with modern replicas of the iconic DB4 GT Zagato. The latter is basically the spiritual predecessor of the DBS GT Zagato.

Aston Martin Celebrates its Roots with The Vantage Heritage Racing Edition
Aston Martin is rolling out the goods at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed with a new special edition model called the Vantage Heritage Racing Edition. Limited to just 60 units, the Vantage Heritage Racing Edition is a creation of the automaker’s bespoke Q division, honoring Aston Martin’s rich and storied motorsports history. The Vantage Heritage Racing Edition is available with six different liveries that celebrate six of Aston Martin’s most iconic and important race cars, including the mighty DBR9 that conquered the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2007 and 2008 while sporting the iconic “Gulf” livery. Aston Martin hasn’t released details on pricing and availability, though, to be honest, it’s hard to imagine any of the 60 Vantage Heritage Racing Edition models to go unsold once they become available.

Last year we saw something amazing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb - a V-8-powered Aston Martin Cygnet (rebadged Toyota iQ). Aside from that astonishing piece of engineering, Aston Martin gave us a look at the Vulcan AMR Pro - basically the most hardcore racing Vulcan there is. So, Aston Martin answered the question of its legacy in the best way possible. This year, however, Aston Martin will do something completely different - show us its first SUV. Dubbed the DBX, the pre-production Aston SUV will roam up that Goodwood hill precisely 70 years after the company appeared at the Goodwood racetrack for the first time.

The Next-Gen "AM9" Aston Martin Vanquish Will Offer Something Most Supercars Don’t Have These Days
Aston Martin’s goal to reinvent itself as a bonafide purveyor of high-end performance cars isn’t slowing down anytime soon. As if the inevitable arrivals of the Valkyrie and Vulcan hypercars aren’t enough, the British automaker is also scheduled to launch the mid-engined Vanquish supercar, complete with…a manual transmission. Oh, yes. People who love to be in control of their supercars on the road can test their driving skills anew once the next-generation Vanquish arrives, presumably around 2022. There’s no word yet on what kind of manual gearbox Aston Martin plans to use on the mid-engined Vanquish, but it’s a manual gearbox nevertheless. That alone is reason enough to get excited about the possibilities, especially when every performance car maker worth its salt has all-but-abandoned the manual transmission in any of their exotics.
Aston Martin is Planning a Valkyrie Invasion on the Nurburgring
Aston Martin has never held the production car lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. That’s an important distinction to remember because that could change soon when the British automaker brings the Valkyrie hypercar to the famous race track. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but Aston Martin appears to be set on making an attempt at the ‘Ring’s production car lap record for “international marketing” purposes, as explained by Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer in a conversation with Motoring. Now, talking a big game about setting the production car lap record at the Nurburgring and actually doing it are two very different things. But if there’s a car out there that’s well-equipped to unseat the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ (the current record holder) it’s the 1,160-horsepower British hypercar. Only time will tell if Aston Martin goes through with it, but, at this point, it’s probably safe to start taking bets now. Any takers?
Aston Martin DBX to be built at St Athan
Aston Martin may be late to the SUV party but the British automaker is doing everything it can to ensure that the DBX will be a success right out of the box. It’s even opening a brand-new facility that will, at first, focus only on making the DBX before also assembling all of the Lagonda models. The new factory located in Saint Athan, Wales, will eventually employ up to 750 people, most from around the Vale of Glamorgan area.
While production for the DBX will kick-off in earnest in the first half of 2020, Aston Martin used the unveiling of its new plant to also show to the press what has to be the production-ready version of its SUV, albeit covered in red-and-black camouflage. The version we’ve seen testing at the Nordschleife and the Arctic Circle among other places in the past year or so was a prototype but the body we can see on the new mule displayed at Saint Athan is the real deal that people will see in late 2019 when the official launch event will take place.
The Aston Martin DBX will soon become the newest member of a very popular niche, one that was, basically, made popular some 15 years ago when Porsche launched the Cayenne. The luxury and sports car establishment might’ve laughed at the news that Stuttgart’s sports car maker, famed for building the 911 for decades, lost its way and started building SUVs but, soon enough, the market demanded more super-fast and super-luxurious options and Bentley, Maserati, Land Rover, and even Lamborghini answered the call of the masses and came forth with their own SUVs. Ferrari is also expected to entertain its wealthy clientele with a high-riding Prancing Horse named the Purosangue, so Aston Martin’s decision to create the DBX feels normal once you take a step back and look at the whole picture. On top of that, sales of these models are what enable these manufacturers to continue to make sports cars and supercars.

Aston Martin’s new flagship tourer is finally here, and it brings with it two iconic names blended together and plenty of power to make models like the Ferrari 812 Superfast tremble with fear. To make the new Superleggera what it is, Aston Martin did some serious work to the underpinnings that were borrowed from the DB11. In essence, the automaker managed to shed a total of 160 pounds and threw in a more aggressive design that makes it worthy of flagship status. Powering the beast is Aston’s familiar 5.2-liter V-12, but it’s tuned to deliver a gut-wrenching 715 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque – enough to push this beaut up to 50 mph in 3.4 seconds and all the way to a top speed of 211 mph.

It just so happens that On Her Majesty’s Secret Service — the first Bond movie that didn’t star Sean Connery — is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and what better way to commemorate that milestone than by rolling out a 50-piece unit that’s inspired by the Aston that starred in the movie, the 1969 Aston Martin DBS. Unfortunately, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Edition is only available in the U.K. Each model carries a starting price of £300,007.00, with first deliveries to starting the fourth quarter of this year. In case you’re wondering, Aston did add the £7 for gimmick’s sake. The total price converts to almost $380,000 based on current exchange rates.
