Our newest rendering puts the old concept to shame!

The Aston Martin Lagonda was a luxurious sports saloon that was in constant production from 1974 to 1990, covering four different generations or “series.” Then in 2009, Aston Martin talked about reviving the Lagonda name, and to do so, brought out an SUV-ish concept that was, well, kinda ugly. It did get some good reviews as well, but for the most part, it wasn’t exactly up to par with anything else on the market. It was slated for production at one point toward 2012 when Aston expressed interest in bringing it to market in places like China, but once CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez was no longer in the picture, the Lagonda name was then rescheduled to be its own marque – one that can be found in the latest Lagonda Tarif – a fine vehicle in its own right. However the market is constantly changing, and coupe-ish SUVs are becoming more of a thing, and that’s why you’re looking at our latest rendering of a new Aston Martin Lagonda.

Essentially a mix of several models combined together, we’ve got the tall roofline muscular and defined rear haunches, a little bit of DB11 DNA, and a much larger version of the DB11’s grille design with a massive emphasis on height. Needless to say, our rendering artist has much better taste than whoever was responsible for that Lagonda SUV concept of 2009. To put it simply, this one isn’t ugly at all. Under Aston Martin ownership since 1947, Lagonda stopped making production cars in 1990, with a handful of models unveiled after the Aston Martin Lagonda sedan was discontinued. Rumored to make a comeback in the late 2000s, Lagonda finally returned to the market in 2014, when the limited-edition Taraf sedan was introduced. Four years have passed, since and Lagonda has now unveiled the Vision Concept at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

A futuristic vehicle with a sleek, shooting brake-like design, the Vision Concept sports a luxurious, four-seat interior that’s ready to give Rolls-Royce and Bentley products a run for their money. Like many modern concepts, it also has autonomous drive and uses a zero-emission drivetrain. More importantly, Lagonda says that the Vision Concept previews a production model that’s scheduled to hit the assembly line in 2021. The upcoming model will have an SUV body style and will borrow styling features from the Geneva show car. Revived in 2014 with the limited-edition Taraf sedan, Lagonda just announced plans to build its first-ever SUV. Wheeling around in a million dollars of British opulence

I know what you’re thinking – it looks like an Aston Martin, it sounds like an Aston Martin, and it probably even smells like an Aston Martin. But an Aston Martin, it isn’t (at least in a technical sense). No, the sexy four-door you see here is in fact called a Lagonda, specifically the Taraf. But your instincts weren’t far off – it’s built by AM, and it’s based on the Rapide, with power sourced from an easily recognizable 5.9-liter V-12. However, the wheelbase was stretched by nearly 8 inches, and there are enough unique bits added to supposedly justify a seven-figure price tag. But is it really worth it? Motor Trend paid a visit to the U.K. to find out.

If you’re unaware, the Lagonda name is over a century old, bearing a history of high-end performance and luxury cars. Now, Aston is bringing it back to help make a splash in the tippy-top-shelf sedan market. Originally only offered in the Middle East, it was recently decided that the new Lagonda would also be offered in the U.S. and in England, but with production limited to just 200 units total, odds are you won’t be running into one any time soon.

Just a few of the interesting features on this thing include an all carbon-fiber body, 540 horsepower, fully adjustable suspension, a new ZF eight-speed transmission, and a wheelbase over 125 inches in length.

Aston Martin Is Looking For A Location To Build Its First Crossover

The flourishing crossover/SUV market has attracted a large number of carmakers in recent years. Porsche and BMW are two companies that made massive profits by offering crossovers, but the list actually includes the majority of mainstream automakers. Soon, we’ll see supercar brand Lamborghini and luxury manufacturer Bentley roll out their own SUVs. Aston Martin will also join the ranks of premium brands offering an SUV, but the Brits still have a few problems to solve, including finding a location for a new factory.

Aston’s main problem with the upcoming DBX crossover lies in its only factory in Gaydon, England, which has no room for expansion. As a result, the brand is evaluating "multiple global locations" for a new facility, according to Automotive News, quoting a company spokesman. The company is considering locations in the U.K. and U.S., including a former air force hangar in Wales and Mercedes’ plant in Vance, Alabama.

Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer has previously said that the Alabama site is an "obvious choice" because the brand’s partner, Daimler, already builds Mercedes SUVs there, but the Brits have yet to confirm they will build crossovers in the U.S. What I do know is that Aston Martin plans to build about 3,000 crossovers a year, for which Daimler should have enough room in Alabama.

Aston Martin is expected to pick a new location by the end of the year. The DBX is rumored to arrive sometime in 2019.

Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf Now Available In Europe

Introduced a few months ago in Dubai, the Lagonda Taraf, Aston Martin’s first production vehicle to wear the iconic name in nearly 30 years, made its European debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The Taraf’s European launch comes as a surprise, as the British initially announced the sedan would be available in the Middle East only. It turns out Aston Martin decided to broaden the Taraf’s availability to mainland Europe, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Singapore at the request of Andy Palmer, who became the company’s new CEO in 2014.

"Opening up the Lagonda Taraf to an increased number of customers around the world was a high priority for me as soon as I joined Aston Martin late last year. I wanted to be able to offer this exceptional saloon to the potential owners from around the globe who have been enquiring about it, and I’m very happy that we have been able to expand the Lagonda proposition," Palmer said in a statement.

Although Aston Martin has yet to announce when the sedan will go on sale, it did mention the Taraf has been re-engineered to become available with either left- or right-hand drive. Unfortunately, the Brits have no plans to bring it to the U.S. Only 200 examples will be made, with pricing expected to start from around the equivalent of $450,000. In fact, due to the highly bespoke nature of the car, the Taraf could fetch in excess of $600,000, which would make it pricier than a fully specced Rolls-Royce Phantom.

The Lagonda name, previously used by Aston Martin for a hand-built, ultra-expensive sedan built between 1976 - 1990, returned under the spotlight about five years ago when the Brits introduced the Lagonda Concept.

Oddly enough, that concept had nothing to do with the four-door grand tourer, but rather a sporty SUV proclaimed to be a more luxurious alternative to the popular Porsche Cayenne. Rumors about a production version went back and forth with no relevant outcome, although the consensus was the vehicle might arrive in 2016.

But now we have to put the Lagonda SUV behind us, because it appears Aston Martin is actually planning to revive the iconic nameplate for a brand new sedan. Such a vehicle was spotted testing in the United Kingdom covered in camouflage. Our friends over at Autoblog think the Brits will slap a Lagonda badge on its trunk.

Details are scarce right now, but it’s safe to assume the four-door will be based on the Rapide S and ride on a stretched version of its wheelbase. Power is likely to come from the same 6.0-liter V-12 engine that delivers 558 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. More details should become available later this year, so stay tuned to TopSpeed for all the updates.

Aston Martin Partners With Oman Air For Lagonda Sedan Test Run

So this is what the Aston Martin Lagonda Sedan looks like. It doesn’t look like a typical Aston Martin that much I can see. But more surprisingly, the Lagonda’s first public appearance came as a collaboration with luxury airline Oman Air.

The two companies announced a partnership that basically gives the Middle Eastern airline a free publicity tie up with the British automaker’s new top-of-the-range, luxury four-door super-saloon designed exclusively for the Middle East market. So if you happen to travel in that part of the world, prepare yourself to see a lot of Lagonda-Oman Air billboards.

It’s a stroke of marketing savvy for both companies. Aston Martin gets a top quality airline on its side and Oman Air rakes in whatever interest - and they’re sure to be many - the limited edition Lagonda Sedan will generate in a market that has no shortage of deep-pocketed customers.

As part of their partnership, Aston Martin is sending a Lagonda prototype to do some test runs in Muscat as part of its early testing program, allowing the vehicle to get a good read on the environmental conditions in that region. Don’t be surprised if some of the beautiful people of Oman snap some quality photos of the Lagonda mule. You might even see some of them in these pages at some point in the future.

Aston Martin Drops Lagonda SUV Plans

We’ve always thought of the Aston Martin Lagonda SUV as being former CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez’s pet project. But now that Bez is out of the management picture over at Aston, it looks like the Lagonda SUV is heading out with him.

Aston Martin Director of Design Marek Reichman recently talked to Pistonheads about the state of the company in the post-Bez era and the discussion brought about an update on the state of the long-awaited SUV.

If you’ve been waiting for the release of the model, maybe now’s the best time to turn away. With Bez out as CEO, the Lagonda SUV is no more.

“That was a different time,” Reichmann told Pistonheads. “It was Ulrich’s time. And now we’re in a very, very different time, with a different plan and with a different projection of what that brand should become.”

Part of that plan is retaining the Lagonda brand. But instead of building it as an SUV, Aston is now setting its sights on turning the Lagonda into its own exclusive marque.

That means more attention to exclusivity and less on the idea of mass production, which was something that Aston initially planned for the Lagonda SUV.

There was a well-established manufacturer half a decade before Aston Martin known as Lagonda. With some early success, Lagonda became quite famous in its time till the consequences of World War II caused major struggle to the manufacturer. In 1947, Aston Martin took possession of Lagonda and reserved the name of limited number, ultra-luxurious sedans.

Aston Martin resurrected the hibernating Lagonda name in 1974 at London Motor Show by announcing the “Aston Martin Lagonda V8”, of which only seven units were made. The new model revived name received a humdrum response from the market and Aston Martin went back to drawing board with William Tomas. In 1976, Aston Martin lifted the curtains from a striking new concept model which surged the popularity of the Lagonda brand in quick succession. Its redesigned Lagonda received a wild response and orders piled in. With demands breaking through the roof and production rate limited to only one per week, Aston Martin rolled out the first production model in 1979 and three years later, the car finally got cleared for sale in USA.

To make the exceptional design possible Aston Martin’s engineer pushed the V-8 engine as far back as possible and even then more room was required to make the mechanism work. The engineers hatched a new intake system to compensate the space, which restricted the engine output. Tackling the issue, Aston Martin installed larger intake valves after mending the engine’s cylinder walls to meet the expected power delivery.

Aston Martin launched the Lagonda Series 3 in 1986 at New York Motor Show and the Series 4 was unveiled in all-new form in 1986.

Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz in Talks on a Possible Luxury SUV

Part of Daimler AG’s new ownership stake in Aston Martin appears to be ajoint partnership between the two companies to develop a slate of sport-utility vehicles. Don’t look now, but the future of the long-awaited Lagonda SUV might just have gotten a lot clearer.

According to Bloomberg, the two brands are in the middle of talks on sharing the underpinnings of a new full-size SUV with Aston Martin, something the British marquee has planned for a long time but has yet to materialize.

But the recent alliance with Daimler opens up a whole slate of possibilities for Aston Martin, now that it has a technology partner that can provide it with the right blueprint to see to completion a project that has been in the works for a long time now.

Part of the discussion appears to be Daimler helping Aston Martin in shaping up the Lagonda SUV. The two have already announced another part of their deal that calls for Mercedes’ AMG division to help develop new V-8 engines that will be used on future Aston Martin models. So this latest news that the two companies are now working on the Lagonda can be construed as another significant step toward what’s shaping up to be a fruitful alliance between the two companies.

Daimler may not get anything out of it at the moment, but should Aston’s next wave of models, the Lagonda included, be sales hits, Daimler’s five percent stake in Aston Martin could very well prove to be very useful.

It is no longer a mystery that Mercedes-AMG is in cahoots with Aston Martin, but the link will be subtle and we will not see Astons cruising the roads with AMG badges any time soon — or ever for that matter. Things become rather interesting when we start talking about the rumored production of the Aston Martin Lagonda SUV. The only real reason that Aston has put off the Lagonda, which the company showed off in 2009 at the Geneva Auto Show, is because the British sports car builder didn’t have a suitable platform for it.

With Mercedes now working with Aston Martin, the former has access to several SUV platforms to sit the Lagonda atop. In fact, Dieter Zetsche, the head of Mercedes-Benz, made it clear to Autocar that he is open to sharing the GL-Class platform with Aston Martin.

That really strikes us as odd, as the deal was initially only supposed to include electronics and a few bespoke V-8 engines. Now the deal is suddenly showing the potential to include an entire platform; so, how long until Mercedes backs off its AMG-badge stance and starts sharing that with Aston?

Aston Martin Still Fine-Tuning Future Lagonda Luxury Models

Ever since Aston Martin re-introduced the Lagonda name in 2009, the super-lux SUV has been stuck in limbo with no production plans set in the near future.

Widespread revulsion at its styling froze the crossover in its tracks from day one.

But even with the Lagonda’s future not certain, Aston Martin boss Dr. Ulrich Bez isn’t closing the door on both the Lagonda brand and the Lagonda SUV. Or at least not yet.

Speaking to Drive, Dr. Bez intimated that he still believes that the Lagonda has a production future, although a specific timetable can’t be disclosed just yet.

So, in short, Aston Martin still has hopes for the Lagonda down the road. It’s just a matter of finding the right time to do it. Dr. Bez did say that when the Lagonda does get its production date, one of its biggest draws will be the way its built. Despite being billed as an SUV, the Lagonda will be less "utility" and more "luxury", a straight reference to the kind of image Aston Martin has come to be known for.

That’s good news for those waiting for the Lagonda to return, but not as good as the string Dr. Bez threw out in saying that the door isn’t closed on the SUV and the model for that matter.

Aston Martin still wants to produce Lagonda SUV

When Aston Martin unveiled the Lagonda SUV back in 2009, it was thought to be the beginning of the Lagonda revival, previewing the company’s first SUV. That idea crumbled about a year later when Aston Martin announced that a production version would never be built. Instead, the company wanted to focus on a Lagonda version of the Rapide sedan.

To make it even more confusing, Aston Martin is now reconsidering its decision because it’s trying to enter markets like China where large models are a must. That, and because of the market’s positive reaction to Bentley’s EXP 9 F concept.

According to Autocar, Aston Martin boss Ulrich Bez already confirmed that an updated Lagonda concept is being developed and that it will be unveiled next year. The new Lagonda SUV has been confirmed as a super-luxury 4x4 and will target the future SUV from Lamborghini. Next to it, Aston Martin will also bring out a second Lagonda model, a saloon.

Aston Martin’s future depends on Daimler partnership

Just when it seemed a brand new collaboration was on the verge of rising, talks between Aston Martin and Daimler have been slowed almost to a halt. The two brands had an interest in working with each other because it would be mutually beneficial: Aston Martin would have helped in developing Maybach models and they would, in turn, be able to take advantage of Mercedes’ latest technology. Now, German publications have reported that this agreement has collapsed and, as a result, Aston Martin’s future is in grave danger.

The first Aston Martin vehicle to feel the heat may be the DB9 supercar. This model is built on the VH platform that was developed when Aston was owned by Ford Motor Co, but since a redesign is expected for the 2014 model year, Aston Martin finds itself scrambling for a new platform; one they thought they would be able to get from Daimler. The redesigned Vantage scheduled to come out in 2015 is in the same precarious situation, leaving Aston working doubletime to re-engineer the current platform, powertrain, and sheet metal.

The highly anticipated Lagonda models aren’t any safer. This bump in the road leaves their production entirely uncertain because the SUV was going to be built on the Mercedes GL platform and the sedan was supposed to use the Mercedes S-Class platform.

Aston Martin is completely at a loss, though. They just secured a £304 million bond - about $440 million at the current rates - from global investors at a rather high 9.25% interest over the next seven years. This money will be going towards designing all new platforms for their full line of sports cars, including the DB9, Vantage, and Rapide.
