Audi->ke14 started updating its line-up with the A5 and will continue to do so with every other model in the line-up throughout the next year. This even includes models that are still relatively young, like the Q5 SUV. The facelift version of the Q5 has now officially been announced and will go on sale later this summer. Prices on the European market will start from 39,900 euro - or about $52,500 at the current exchange rates.

Unlike the current Q5 that is only being offered with a choice of one gasoline engine and two TDI units, the new Q5 offers five engine options: three TDI and two TFSI engines with power ranging from 143 HP to 272 HP.

Just like with all the other facelifted models, the new Q5's exterior updates include a modified grille, bumper and fog lights, but also modified headlights with LED lamps and xenon plus units. At the rear the model has received modified diffuser and tailpipes, while for the interior gets additional strides in refined styling.

The exterior

While updating the Q5 Audi tried to make the model even more sportier, spacious and more functional. The car measures 4.63 meters (15.19 feet) long, 1.90 meters (6.23 feet) wide and 1.65 meters (5.41 feet) tall and weights a total of 3,869.11 lb. The car's engine hood and trunk lid were made of aluminum, while a large share of the car’s structural elements integrate ultra-high-strength steels in order to reduce weight and improve crash safety.

Up front the model has received modified headlamps with LED daytime running lights and the optional xenon plus units. The changes continue with a single frame grille with vertical chrome struts and Audi rings, modified bumpers with integrated air inlets, high-gloss black inserts and fog lights with chrome rings. At the rear Audi is also offering modified tail lamps with LED lights and modified diffuser inserts and tailpipes.

Customers will have to choose between 15 colors, including four new colors, while the optional S line package will add an offroad styling package.

The S line sport package adds:

-elegant trim components

-19-inch wheels with 235/55 tires,

-a sport suspension

-the exclusive exterior color Daytona Grey, pearl effect.

The interior

Audi has also updated the interior in order to make it even more sportier. Lots of users control have narrow chrome trim; the steering column control stalks, ignition key and instruments were given subtle modifications. The narrow panels of the center console are high-gloss black and the central media component, MMI navigation plus, now has four buttons, and its volume dial has an additional skip function.

All models will be offered with the convenience key, three-zone automatic air conditioning system and climate-controlled comfort seats with a ventilation function. As an option customers can also get the panoramic glass roof.

There are 35 different combinations to choose from, including three new interior colors, three fabric and three leather qualities.

Engine line-up and transmissions

Customers can now enjoy a choice of five engines: three TDI and two TFSI engines all of them offered with a start-stop system as standard and with fuel consumption reduced by 15%.

The base version is the 2.0 TDI four-cylinder offered in two versions: one delivering 143 HP and 236 lbs-ft of torque and the other one with 177 HP and 280 of torque. The first one delivers a fuel economy of 44 mpg and the second one an impressive 39.20 US mpg.

Next there is the 3.0 TDI V6. It delivers a total of 245 HP and 427.79 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with this engine the Q5 will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just6.5 seconds and up to a top speed of 139 mph, while delivering an impressive 36.75 US mpg.

The base gasoline version is a 2.0 TFSI with 225 HP and 258 lbs-ft of torque, while the top version is a 3.0 TFSI V6 with supercharging, which replaces the 3.2-liter engine. This engine delivers a total of 272 HP and 295.02 lb-ft of torque. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds, while top speed goes up to 145 mph. Fuel economy in this case is 27.67 US mpg.

The five engines can be combined with either a manual six-speed transmission, a seven-speed S tronic or an eight-speed tiptronic, while the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system is standard on all versions, except the the 2.0 TDI 143 HP that comes with the front-wheel drive system.

The competition

The list of competitors include the usual Mercedes GLK and the Infiniti EX35. The GLK has also been updated recently with a few exterior changes that make it look even more aggressive and dynamic, along with the use of better quality materials, new equipment, a fully redesigned trim, and a new infotainment systems. Under the hood the model gets a fuel-efficient 3.5- liter direct-injection V6 gasoline engine generating 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand the EX35 gets a 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at 297 HP and 253 lb-ft of torque.
