• 2014 Audi S3 2.0 TFSI quattro By MTM

I had once the privilege of driving a buddy’s Audi S3. It was a few years ago and while my memory’s admittedly hazy of the circumstances behind it, I do remember feeling a little woozy after that encounter. The S3’s a powerful little sucker that much I can tell you. I can only imagine how the S3 would feel like with this aftermarket program from MTM on the table.

The German tuner has a history of bringing out the best in Audis. Whether its the A1 or the R8, there’s probably an MTM program for it. This time, though, it’s the S3 that takes the spotlight, thanks to a measured tuning upgrade that doesn’t pull any punches.

Don’t expect any aesthetic improvements here. MTM built the program with power and efficiency in mind so it’s all meat, bones, and all that dirty stuff under the hood. The good news is that the tuner’s kit will be available across all variants of the S3. Whether it’s the saloon, cabriolet, sportback, there’s enough MTM love to go around.

All together, an MTM-tuned Audi S3 will cost €62,000, which is about $83,000 based on the exchange rates on 8/4/2014. The kit itself retails for €13,000 ($17,400) so you can have the choice of paying just for that, or for the entire thing, S3 included.

MTM’s M’Cantronic engine upgrade system is largely responsible for improving the output of the S3’s 3.0-liter, four-cylinder, TFSI engine. With this in place, the S3 now produces 360 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. That’s an impressive gain of 60 ponies and 52 pound-feet of torque from the standard output of 300 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque.

The increased output translates into performance too, as the S3 is now capable of hitting 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds — 0.6 second faster than the stock model. The top speed remains the same at 155 mph, but that was to be expected from the very beginning.

Keeping with the mechanical improvements, MTM also added its own performance suspension to go with precision-adjustable coilover suspension systems that the company developed together with the suspension masters at KW.

With the increased output in place, MTM also gave the S3 a new, four-pipe, stainless-steel exhaust system. There’s nothing quite like enjoying the thrill of more power than having an exhaust that can is equally throaty.

It’s not the prettiest set of wheels we’ve seen, but MTM’s decision to give the S3 a choice of either Nardo edition or Bimoto wheels gives customers the opportunity to choose which of the two designs suit their style. The S3 can also accommodate anywhere between 18- to 20-inch wheels.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read full bio

The MTM system has heritage - and spins stories. The heritage is based on MTM boss Roland Mayers’ simple philosophy: cars leaving his performance centre are sporty, super and superior. The stories written about cars after their fitness makeover at MTM tell of victories and records. And an Audi S3 is no exception. Be it a Cabriolet, Saloon or Sportback, the Wettstetten-based manufacturer, right next door to the ingenious Audi brains trust, follows a perfect recipe. It makes sporty Audis and other Volkswagen Group products even sportier and more assured. And what the experienced MTM mechanic needs to achieve this is an M-Cantronic plus 1.5 hours for the modification. The ex-works 300 hp TFSi four-cylinder engine responds powerfully to the new engine management system: 360 hp and 450 Nm of torque make for massive thrust: 4.8 seconds and the sprint from zero to 100 km/h is history, with the electronics kicking in again at 250 km/h to curb further forward momentum. The appropriate gear ratio at any point is selected in the traditional manner on a six-speed manual gearbox.

The MTM S3 doesn’t pussyfoot around. Its 4-pipe stainless steel exhaust system invests each pace with sonorous sound. It is yours for less than 3,200 Euro and is fitted in a shade under two hours.

Ideally when decelerating from 250 km/h to a halt this powerhouse will be partnered with a bespoke MTM brake system measuring a beefy 380 X 34 mm on the front axle. On the rear axle the production standard spec fits the ensemble to a tee. An MTM S3 can be fitted with Nardo edition rims or Bimoto wheels, as you like - in dimensions from 8X18" via 8.5X18" to 9X20". MTM performance suspensions ensure sporty superior swagger tailored to your individual taste.

Precision-adjustable coilover suspension systems, developed in collaboration with suspension specialists KW, are available in various basic set-ups. A perfect MTM S3 ensemble will set you back just shy of 62,000 Euro, a good 13,000 Euro more than the basic price. What that gets you is added value: at the wheel and on the road.
